Default Who has ever bought ammo by the case?

I remember the first time I bought a case of ammo. It was ten 50 round boxes of Remington .40 S&W practice ammo. Now, most of the ammo I buy is by the case.

500 rounds is the largest quantity I have bought at one time. Most of my purchases are (were) in 150 to 200 rounds at a time.

Up until 2020 went crazy, and ammo prices were still good/cheap; I could buy boxes/50 or 100 rounds as cheap as buying by the case. I've never been in a position to buy by the case. Figured as long as I could get it at the same price by the box, why spend the money all at once? I could get brass case target rounds locally for $8/50 ($160/K). Those days, sadly, are gone :-(

I have, a couple of years ago, bought a couple of cases of 12 gauge 00 that was on sale. I have also from time to time bought a case of ammo to take to a class when they required factory new ammo rather than my own reloads, or when it was convenient or cheap to do so. Mostly I roll my own.

While I reload all my .38, 9mm, 45, 380, 32L, 32 S&W, 357, .222, 22-250, and 12 Ga, I buy my 22LR and 20 Ga by the case.

In 2018 and 2019 I was buying one or more cases of ammo a month. Earlier this year I saw the prices starting to rise and purchased a few more cases before prices went out of sight, if you could find any at all.

I am sitting on at least 25 thousand rounds of factory ammo in all the calibers I shoot. It feels good to have plenty of factory ammo since it looks pretty bleak for the future.

While Iím a reloader, I bought ammo by the 1k case fairly often before everyone went off the deep end- and I will again when things settle down (though weíll never see pre-summer prices again).

I have bought ammunition by the case for 25+ years now.

It is extremely rare that I buy less than a case.

On two occasions, the deal was so good, I bought a full pallets and split with buddies at my shooting club. Both of those pallets were Federal Match ammunition. One was 38 Special midrange wadcutter match and the other was the Remington 45ACP SWC Match loading.

I know that in current times, manufacturers are boxing 500 rounds to a case or 200 rounds to a case of Premium ammunition. We used to call those Pony Cases

When I first got into this hobby, I was always on the lookout for ammo, regularly stopping into all the LGS. I was even ammo shopping in my dreams. Then I read here on the forum about mail order ammo. Whoo boy, what a relief. A few mouse clicks and then cases of ammo come and find me!!

I once made the mistake of ordering a 1000 round case of .45 acp, delivered to my porch. Fortunately, my back muscles healed up in a couple of days.

If you consider a brick of.22s a case I have bought plenty.

As far as center fire I have bought many 500 cases of many of the calibers and gauges I own. Its so easy to just put them on the shelf's in the external big box!

Back in the 90s I was shooting a lot, averaging probably 1000 rounds/month. Where I lived we had a gun show every 3 months or so. I would go to the gun show with a hand truck and pick up a 1000-round case each of .38 Special, 9mm, and .45ACP, commercially-reloaded ammo. IIRC, each case was right around $100. That would last me until the next gun show.

It's been several years since I've bought by the case.

I live about 45 min away from AIM Surplus. That's a good thing and a bad thing. Then I was introduced to SG Ammo and AmmoSeek. I started to buy case amounts of ammo back in the 90's when prices were low and that stock got me through quite a few of the supply shortages. As prices came back down over the past 2 yrs, I started to restock the ammo that I had used up from my 90's stash. I can't remember the last time I bought ammo by the box.

I buy 22, 9mm and .223 by the case since I shoot a lot of it. When ammo got really cheap a few years ago I started buying 9mm two cases at a time once or twice a year. But I do not shoot 308 and 12 gauge very often so I buy it by the box. With 44 it is somewhere in between. I typically buy about 250 to 500 rounds at a time.

I have a friend that claims if the UPS guy can get all of your ammo order to your door in one trip with a hand truck you didn't buy a lot of ammo. So by his standards I have never ordered a lot of ammo.

I used to buy shotgun shells 20-30 cases at a time.

Since I went blind in my dominant eye and switched from sporting clays to handguns, I have bought a few cases of .22 and centerfire handgun ammo one case or brick at a time.

I do, for 9x19, 9x18 Mak, 7.62x39, and .223/5.56. And of course .22lr by the brick or bucket.

For .32 acp I try to, but during the rush after the Beretta 81 surplus hit the market, I bought it by the box... I had it up on Ammoseek, and it was literally going out of stock as I clicked the links. The cheapest then was around 10.98 a box/50, there were a few pretty low, then after about 5 links everything was around $18 a box or higher. The first couple links said "insufficient quantity" and changed to "sold out" by the time I got it in my cart. I was able to go to some site with Blazer Aluminum at about $11.50 a box, that would tell me if I could keep adding individual boxes; I got 11 and that was it. So I bought that.

.45 acp, I used to buy at the 1/2 case if it was an option, and generally got the cheapest brass I could find (including reloads). I was able to get in on that early in the panic from some places in those quantities (Defender ammo, I actually was able to get a 1/2 case of blemished ammo!). Started doing the 1/2 case of steel during the early panic, including something called Hotshot. And hey, the stuff shoots fine.

My son and I have a few old surplus rifles, guns in the various 30 caliber ranges. In these, I don't grab cases, but instead pick up what we can at reasonable prices. 7.62x54R grabbed a tin. 7.65 Argentine will get either new PPU or surplus in amounts generally of 100. 8mm Mauser, I picked up a few boxes of the steel Hotshot stuff that is a bit tight, then got an ammo box of surplus.

7.62x51, I get by the half case (if that's what we call 500 rds).

I load most all my metallic ammo but don't load shot shells. Just got 4 cases of 12ga target loads last week.

I used to work for a security company. I was a branch trainer and ordered all their ammo. We had our own firearms training program and also had to requalify at least twice per year. We also turned in our ammo for new once a year. We used either Gold Dot Or HST.

I was able to purchase from a large east coast distributor. They allowed me to purchase ammo at my companies cost. (My company had over 5,000 employees carrying guns in the US.)

My branch had about 50 employees at that time. I ordered over twenty cases of various calibers of ammo for our employees personal use. Since then I only order by the case.

When I left to Peoples Republic of California, I had to move about five to six hundred pounds of ammunition. That is POUNDS, not rounds. I'm still not too sure I have enough.

Since I now own two 9mm submachineguns, I have a relatively small stash of 9mm, plus I reload 9mm a lot.

About 10 years ago I bought a mixed case of Speer Gold Dot. Half was 9mm and half was 38sp. I bought it on line from a private party and the price was so good, I was skeptical of buying. Turned out to be a bargain and great seller. Only wish I had bought a full case of each. Besides a box or 2 hear and there of Buffalo Bore 44 mag, that is the only factory ammo I have bought in probably 30 year or better. The Gold Dot was $12 a box shipped and they were 50rd boxes. This stuff goes for over a buck a round now at regular retail prices. I have gifted most of it away over the years as carry ammo to friends and family.

Oh ya, I do buy trap loads by the case. When the prices were at $4.00 to $4.50 I stocked up so have not bought any since the recent run up.

I have also bought lots and lots of 22 ammo by the case. While sage rat shooting it is not uncommon to go through 1000 to 2000 rounds per day per guy. I quit buying when the price was $14 per brick. Still have some that is priced at $6.80 per brick =$68 per case.

Back in the day when milsurp rifle ammo was readily available by the case I bought it cheap and stacked it deep. I still have crates of it stacked up in my basement. My boys will razz me asking me why I have so much ammo piled up. I remind them that they sure shot their share of it and it was always on my dime! I would take 6-8 thousand rounds to shoot at the Knob Creek machinegun shoot and then buy another 6-8 thousand rounds there to take home to replace what I shot.

I don't shoot as much as I use to so at the rate I'm shooting it up I probably have enough to last me the rest of my life. When my grandkids are old enough they can help me put a bigger dent in the pile. You can never have too much ammo!

Well, you still need to break down the price. Have bought cases for my former employer and they charged MSRP for the case, so not less expensive as if you'd buy the boxes individually.

I cannot remember how many 880 round crates of 7.62x54R I bought at <$100 a crate.

Bought one each of .223, and 7.62x39
I reload everything else except 22lr and have now started reloading .223 too.
Not sure if I'll ever reload 7.62x39 - the brass is too hard to find.

Literally dozens of cases over the years. Not much this year, though. Bought a few cases early in the year, but nothing since the panic pricing set in. I buy 9mm, .223/5.56mm. .40, .45, 12 gauge, .380. and 20 gauge by the case. I usually do not buy .22LR by the case, but I have when the price was especially low.

I buy cases of .308 and .223 when I find it cheap for plinking. Usually PMC or Wolf Gold. Carry and hunting ammo I usually buy factory loads. Everything else I load myself.

I have bought cases of ammo on numerous occasions over the years and built up a stockpile. With the current situation I'm glad I did

ah the golden days of CMP HXP ammo. I came back from the CMP eastern games with about 3000 rounds of 3006 in spam cans layered in the floor of my little kia. no shipping no sales tax, almost no ground clearance on car...

Case lots are much preferred but I will purchase by the box if it is on sale with limited purchase quantity.

The poll didn't include multiple cases at a time.

The most I ever bought at one time was about 40,000 rounds--a friend was moving out of state and couldn't take it with him (Hawaii). About the same amount of primers and about 30 pounds of powder.

In March, just before the first shutdown, I bought about 4-5K rounds of 9mm at $199/K. 223/5.56 was about $330 per K. I wish I bought a pallet of each at those prices!

So yes, I'll buy ammo by the case if that's all they got.

Iíve been buying ammo by the case for years. My local police supply offered good prices on ammo by the case, so I took advantage of the savings. I also receive a case of .38 ammo a year from work. At the moment those cases of ammo are a welcome sight in my garage.

I think I bought my first case ~1975. Ever since, there's been a back and forth between the economics of the current case price, do I shoot much of that load?, and my time, so there's been off and on again case buys between time is tight with good prices and having time and patience and lousy case prices.
During the Obama era factory ammo drought, I dragged out powder, primers and bullets I bought in the 70's, once again, "by the case"; i.e., boxes of 1,000 bullets, bricks of primers, powder by the 8lb keg, and reloaded to feed my hobby. As old as they were, all of it worked just fine.

Bulk buy just seems so convenient, whether factory ammo or components, both for lower unit cost and ease of storage.

Years ago I bought 3 wood crates of Danish (AMA) 30-06 enbloc. They even came in 80 round bandoliers. Very good ammo for my garands.

Last year my UPS man cursed me more than once with frequent deliveries from SGAmmo. I made sure to be prepared for any election year craziness.
