Has 45ACP dried up?
I can only shop on-line but it looks like 45ACP is getting hard to come by too. When you do find it, what kind of prices are they getting? Just wondering if has gone crazy like 9mm.

Finding any ammo anywhere these days is a hit-or-miss proposition, and prices are high. One fellow was positively jubilant the other day on a Facebook S&W page because he was able to buy 200 rounds of 9mm Blazer 115-gr. FMJ for "only" $100!

I hear that. I still have several hundred but all of my reloading equipment is now at my sons in another state and he doesn't have it set up yet. While not an emergency that's my weak link in the ammo department. At $75 I'll either wait, or look for a trade.
Thanks for the replies.

In just the last week I’ve run across a fair amount of 45acp ammo. One LGS has 10+ boxes of surplus GI ammo as well as several boxes of commercial 45acp. Although none of this is marketed with cool names denoting super-duper sd ammo, it’s all just fine for sd or anything else you’d like to do with it. (They also had a bunch of old 190 gr hollow point Super Vel which I bought.)
Another LGS had several boxes of Remington 45acp 185gr target ammo.
There’s ammo out there, just not on the internet. You have to get out of the house and on the road to find it. The big box stores aren’t the place to look: small, obscure shops are the honey holes.

Yes, I understand that but unfortunately I live on a small island, no ammo here.

I've used ammoseek.com, and the cheapest I found was $0.79/round for steel case ammo. Brass started in the $0.80s/round and up. Most of this was by the case.
I looked at my usual online source, SGAmmo, and they didn't have any .45ACP in stock listed.

Just a crazy old mans wondering about which is cheaper. Pay the current market price for ammo or spend hours, days riding around burning gas and wearing out a vehicle looking for cheaper ammo. Larry

.45 ACP and .38 S&W Special were the first to finally disappear around here, but it’s only been the last month or so. 9mm and .223/5.56 still show up sporadically. .40 S&W and everything else is just hit or miss . . .

It’s hard to come by in these parts. I have only found FMJ range ammo once in the last couple of months and was able to buy one 200 round box of WWB FMJ for $70($0.35/round). 9mm FMJ is still available for $0.24- $0.30/round in stores every few weeks.
Most online ammo flippers in these parts are asking $0.50/round for 9mm FMJ and $0.80/round for .45 FMJ. I won’t pay inflated prices....

I've only ever seen 9MM regularly restocked online. I've found sparing boxes of 38 special and 45ACP locally, but not much. Hopefully this shortage comes to pass in the foreseeable future.

I was at our indoor range a couple weeks back. They had just gotten 10 cases of 9mm. But they had zero .45acp. At our bit of everything store I got 2 50rd. boxes of 9mm for $12.97 each. They had no .45acp, but said a sister store 25 miles up the road did have some. Hit and miss seems to be the "new normal".

The prices are all over. Right now on ammoseek.com you can find 10mm cheaper than 9mm, 40 S&W or 45 ACP. The prices vary every day but they are all usually surprisingly close.

If you are shooting a .45 ACP revolver, you are in luck. Go to Ammoseek and look for .45 GAP . Works fine in my S&W using moon clips, it is available from many sources, and is cheaper than ACP.

The only quality current production pistol ammo I can routinely find in quantity is current PPU and S&B, 7.62X25 Tokarev.
Funny, the store currently has a policy of one box of handgun ammo per caliber/per day.
I can buy all the Tok ammo I want..... According to them, I am the only one who has bought any Tokarev ammo since the crisis began.

Lately have seen None around here.
A while back before it went completely off the track I bought 2 Boxes of 45ACP at NRA Whittington for my SIL.
It’s his Christmas Present!

My wife sent me a FB screenshot yesterday of a local gun shop north of home that specializes in black rifles celebrating a big shipment of ammunition which they have for sale at "more reasonable" prices. I had some business in the area, and the place is sorta on my way home. "More reasonable" was $0.83 cents a round for bulk off brand 9mm FMJ. I didn't buy any, but the train of cars rolling in and out left a dust cloud in the gravel parking lot like the cavalry was coming . . .

Phone calls I've eavesdropped on at the LGS go something like this
"Hello, Joe Gun"
"Do you have any X?"
"No"
I've got 3000 coated cast on the way. I'm set for a while with 38 and 9 mm.

I got in line before Academy Sports opened about a month ago, line about 50yds long on truck day. I was near the end of the line but was still able to get 3 boxes of 9mm that day (limit 2 boxes, my wife got one). (I was doing this for friend, I didn't need ammo, but my friend works at that time in the morning) But talking to people in line they said that they have been seeing 45acp at Academy, (my place in line, there wasn't any) but the prices are pre election standard big box retail prices.

I thought I might be a little crazy for stocking up over the last couple of years.
Who’s crazy now?
It has become very dry and expensive these days and I hope things eventually return to ‘normal’ but who knows?
Just keep surfing the Net and be prepared to spend a little more.
Get what you need now and grin&bear the price while you’re looking for better deals down the road.
It used to be buy in quantity saves, and I guess it still does, but you’ll almost need a second mortgage to do so.
Good luck!

After experiencing Sandy Hook, Obama, etc, etc. there should be no problem getting ammo.
Last Spring the news talked about this thing they called a pandemic. About the same day I got an email telling us that our Spring Cruise was being cancelled. I got a full refund. The next day I checked online and ordered a ton of powder and primers - all in stock. That same afternoon I went to Wallyworld and bought 20 bricks of .22 LF.
All was charged on my credit card. Before the bill came due I got my cruise refund, plus a govmnt stimulus check. Paid the ammo bill in full and had money left over.
I figure I got a 10 year supply and I don't even have to ration my shooting days..
I was expecting snow this year (Duh, its Winter), so I bought a new shovel before the first snowfall because I knew they would all be sold out when the flakes were in the air.
I just don't understand what the problem is....

I’ve had no trouble finding .45 recently. Several shops have had .45 ball, generally Blazer Brass, S&B or Federal for $25 or $26 a box. The .45 was cheaper than 9mm in several shops.

Depends on what you’re looking for. Good quality defensive ammo seems scarce, both in the shops and on line. Ball ammo can be had, which aside from range duty obviously has its’ defensive applications as well, and has for decades (see WWII, Korea, Vietnam, etc.)

It’s pretty dry. .45acp is much harder to find than 9mm. Here’s the pistol ammo shelf last night at the Kelso Sportsman’s Warehouse. All the chain stores are similar shape. I am having better luck at mom and pop gun stores for handgun ammo and reloading components.

The cheapest I could find .45ACP recently was $0.74/round ($370 for a case of 500) of Winchester White Box ball ammo.
While expensive, it sure beats the .380 I could find, which ranged from $1/round for steel cased Russian to $2/round for domestic JHP.

Not everybody gets cruise refunds. Unfortunately, because of the pandemic not everybody even has a job or insurance.
Even when working, not everybody can to afford to lay in a 10-year supply of anything when 56% of Americans have less than $5K in savings and a third have $1K or less. It's hard to justify a range day when you're paying down medical bills, utility bills, grocery bills and/or don't get a paycheck.
That's the problem.

Today purchased 2 boxes 9mm Federal/$12.97 ea., 2 boxes .45acp Federal/$19.97 ea., one box of .38 spl. Federal/$21.97. Wife brought home two boxes of .45auto +P Federal HST. The NW small chain store had full shelves this morning, empty by 4:00pm this afternoon. At least I was able to find some ammo at not too high prices, comparatively speaking.

In a past life after I had worked about 2 years I was laid off and didn't draw a paycheck for over a year. One box of pistol shells lasted me during that time. I didn't have any range days and was only going too shoot if a bear grabbed me.
A ten year supply for me is determined by my finances. If I wasn't working a 10 year supply might be 1 or 2 boxes. When I was trying too win a trophy with a shotgun it took 25,000-30,000 shells per year.
I have a neighbor that bought a .38 Spec, and box of shells many years ago (maybe 20 yrs.) and has never shot the gun so it looks like 1 box of shells will be a lifetime supply for him. Larry

I was paying 25 bucks for 50 rounds of .45 230 grain for a long time. Had to buy one or two boxes at a time. The last time I went there was a four to 5 hundred rounds there with no limit, so I got two boxes. When I got to the register I found out why. $39 for fifty rounds. I decided I had enough for a while.

Some of us got neither a cruise refund nor a .gov check.
Would you like to share? I like cruises and pay taxes.

That's the problem.

I sympathize with everyone that was affected by the pandemic, or just life in general. As a matter of fact, we are fully supporting a family member with severe health problems, plus he lost his job. If I personally had lost my job or had health concerns and couldn't pay my normal bills I would not have spent a dime for ammo. Our cruise was a well earned vacation (a retirement gift to ourselves) after having worked 50 years, on call 24/7/365 for the last 5 years, and saving all the time.
However, the theme of this thread is not who can afford it, its who can find it. The truth of the matter is that the availability is among the worst ever. But it WAS foreseeable, and that was my conclusion. Nevertheless, if you can't afford it availability is a moot point.

Makes me feel not too bad about the MIA Walther PPK/S that I bought in 1972. I have ~3/4 of a box of FMJ, but other carry options in both .45acp and .22lr along with several K of ammo for each.
The Walther will turn up ... eventually.

This am I made a trip to my buddy who does my reloading.
Gave him approx 3k , once fired brass shells (9MM) , and more empty boxes / trays that I cared to count.
The once fired brass was mine , the spare boxes and trays I "garbage picked" , from my range.
Cost to me will be .13 per round.
yipee!

I am not in law enforcement but it seems to me in the old days, when more police departments were free to use the .45 ACP, a mag dump was generally not needed......... Change my mind.

45 acp
SGA Ammo is currently out of 45acp; however, they do have 9mm, boxes of 50 or one brand case of 1000. Several different brands of 9mm,

Like I used to teach my band of unruly children, when they exceeded their personal "speed limits".
