70’s new 44 mag ammo

Here’s the 44 mag ammo I mentioned before. I believe it has a mercury filling that expands with the center spigot. This was very popular in the gun shop. For off duty Leo’s.

Uh ... "mercury filling"?!? You mean the soft lead center post in the Hydra-Shok?

Back in the revolver days when .44MAG was approved for duty and off-duty (as long as jacketed or lead hollowpoints were used), there wasn't an abundance of loads from which to choose.

I did occasionally carry some various 240gr MAG loads, such as the Hydra-Shok, El Dorado Starfire and the Remington SJHP. Come to mention it, I still have a couple hundred of the Hydra-Shoks, as well as some of the Starfire 240's, left over from those days.

However, to try and reduce the potential for excessive threat perforation ("over-penetration") in the more urban areas, I preferred to find and carry Rem 180gr SJHP, Fed 180gr JHP or the W-W 210gr STHP, which I hoped would offer less penetration, depending on the circumstances. Eventually, due to concerns about excessive penetration in some areas, I started carrying .44SPL STHP, which made me realize that carrying a S&W N-frame or big Ruger, loaded with .44SPL loads was a waste of all that weight on my hip.

I seldom carry one of my .44's nowadays, preferring less weight for belt guns.

I see you added some CCI/Speer GDHP's. Are those the older .44SPL version? I think the new Speer Short Barrel .44MAG uses nickle cases. I still have a couple of the old 50rd boxes of the original GDHP .44SPL stashed away, too. Never got around to using them.

Those are all 44 mag ammo.

My olde brother passed away and all his stuff WBA’s given to me to give to my sons. The guns were all in cases from the last time we hunted bear together that was over 20 years ago. I’m surprised nothing rusted. I have more of that ammo somewhere.

Sorry your brother passed. At least you'll often think of him when you handle the guns, ammo and any other related gear his sons gave you.

Hydra shock that’s what they are. I know he had shot a lot of super vel ammo too. Trying to think back 50 years. Even over 20 years. We’re cleaning up my reloading room and I found new 357/41/44 brass in bags I must have 500 rds each. I forgot I had them with all the stuff to reload.Tough to find brass today.

It was. The Rem version of the 180gr, with its scalloped jacket, was fairly hot, too.
