I don't think 'public knowledge' is the right term.

My family, and my shooting friends (those who shoot with me), know I have ammo, in part because I would share deal info in the past. Hey, here's a good price on X.

If you're a recreational shooter (as I am and others are), some of the people you know, know that you are. There's nothing to hide, no more than if someone goes bowling a lot, or plays golf.

It's only natural when things are the way they are now, that less informed people would turn to those more informed. It's kinda like asking the golf guy "are these clubs any good", or "do you have an old spare set- I know you bought some new ones a few months ago".

I don't think anyone has an inventory on me, but they do know I bring ammo from home when I go to the range.

I passed along your helpful suggestion and he hasn't thanked me yet. He forgot the old rule: Never try to con a conner!

This question has been asked on other forums too.

I have never been asked by a "friend" or relative or neighbor for ammo.

And NO I would not give any away. Let them buy it like I did.

I have listed some for sale on another forum. As usual people pm with offers, usually low ball ones.
Have sold some to "needy" members, just to see the same ammo up for sale at a higher price.

All future ammo sales will be at the going rate. It wasn't free to me.

I don't want to gouge people either. But I recently did a "friend" on another site a favor by selling him some ammo at what I paid for, because he was in need.

Next day he had the ammo that I sold him he posted for triple what he paid me for it, to make a fast buck.

Never again. Anymore ammo that I sell will be at "market price".

Default If somebody goes shooting with me....

I'm pretty free with with my reloads. I have some friends that have shown generosity that I make ammo for even through I don't own the gun. Arisaka, 8mm Mauser, Garand. That way I get to shoot them, too.

But now if somebody can't provide something for me in return they can go jump.

I have one person I will share ammo with, no questions asked, besides my immediate family.

HOWEVER, I will gladly share rimfire ammo with youth shooters and a parent, at a range. I will loan ammo at a rimfire bullseye match to someone I regularly compete with. And spare red dote batteries.

I gave a friend 100 rounds of 38 after I located a minty model 64 for him.what good is a new revolver without ammo. Also gave another friend some surplus 308. Ulterior motive on that one. He agreed to hold a Para P14 until I have the purchase price in exchange for the ammo.

Well nobody asked me for ammo, today but My youngest Grand Son had a birthday today and It came to my notice that a friend of my deceased mother has only the rnds in her home defense .38spl. I went to my Pick-up and got her a box from my door pocket. My daughter from Tulsa is going to come by on her way home and pick up a hundred rnd value pack of .380 to take home with her as she hasn't had much luck finding ammo.

I've done a bit of horse trading with people I know very well.
Got a good deal on a 1911 pattern 45, but no ammo, so did a case for case trade for some 9mm.

I'm not sure if this is a repeat of the last panic or will now be the new normal, but not optimistic that we will get down to sub $20 .22lr bricks or 9.99 9mm range fodder any time soon.

I won't share or sell. When I stopped drinking in 2001 I would stop & buy ammo instead of alcohol on the way home. I have ALOT of ammo.
Ammo can get thru times of no money better than money can get you thru times of no ammo.

In ugly times, you can use the ammo to harvest birds and game. Early in the pandemic I joked I could take a suppressed .22 pistol into the park at night and get as many ducks and squirrels as we could eat/freeze.

I am an RSO at a municipal range that does not sell ammo. We welcome our new shooters and spend a lot on one on one help with their new purchases to the point of taking them into the cleaning room and showing them the best field strip and clean.
We are getting first time gun owners that got a box of ammo with their purchase. Most of our staff are reloaders and thanks to a long time customer that before he passed away and left us with a few thousand rounds of 22lr, we can resupply that new shooter with some 22 or our own centerfire ammo. There is a limit to that but we leave it in the hands of the RSO. We have a lot of happy customers.

I have a good friend who called and said he had just bought a new .357 Mag. revolver, but he had no ammo, reloaded or new.
I offered him a box of 50 reloads so he could try it out. He would do the same for me if I needed something.
His Dad was a machinist and my buddy had all his machinist tools and chests. He didn't know what most of them were or how to use them, so he gave everything to me. I offered to pay him, but he declined, so I have no problem helping him out with ammo. We both reload also.

We’re getting into relationships here... I had access to some primers at almost pre-panic prices and made sure my younger brother also got what he needed. My next door neighbor’s oldest son is in college and just starting to shoot, so I texted him about a deal on some ammo for his AK. We have been great “across the fence” neighbors for quite a few years and I’m happy to help him out. Would I do the same for some casual acquaintance? Probably not. jMHO, of course... you need to decide on your own relationships.

You are right. Been on the lookout for some 22lr for a family that lives out in the country in the northern part of Shenandoah Valley. The dad and three boys like to target practice on the place and can’t get ammo in their area. Found some at a NC Walmart yesterday! Looking after friends and family is important during tough times.

Ammo has become a very personal currency in some circles.
I will share a bit with a friend that would return the favor. I'll be a bit more generous with children and grandchildren. My grandson that I have allowed to have a highish round count with a SW22 Victory will find himself on a budget.
