Longshot is my favorite, with Unique second. I use 180 grain bullets exclusively.

I have an M&P shield M2. Do you use a flat or hollow point?

The best powder (right now) is what you have.

Having said that, I vote for Power Pistol.

BE-86 worked well for me . It's a powder that's a bit slower in burn than Unique , but faster than power pistol . It metered well , accuracy was on par and it shot clean , for those interested . I used it more than any others , when reloading the 40 S&W . If it was still available , SR-4756 would of been my first choice . Regards Paul

Default I use ----

Power pistol for all my handgun loads , mainly because I have about 6 lbs and am trying to stretch other powders out because of the virus.

For 155gr I'd use Sport Pistol or Bullseye.

What powders do you have on hand ... Or
What powders can you beg , borrow or steal ... Or
What powders can you buy ...

It's not what is the "Best" powder ...the question is what can you get.
Lots of powders will work ... my short list :
Viht N-340
Auto Comp
Power Pistol
Silhouette
IMR 800X
Longshot
SR 4756
HS-6
AA No. 5
Blue Dot
AA No. 7
There are others but these are top w/ 155 gr. JHP
Cast lead / coated and plated bullets offer the use of several more faster powders like 700X , Bullseye , Red Dot , Zip , AA No.2 , HP-38 , Unique , Universal ... You said HP so I am assuming Jacketed HP ..
Those Pesky Details matter in handloading ... Load Safe

Good Luck
Gary

I have reloaded for a few semi auto's , 380 , 9mm , 357sig , 40 S&W , 45 acp . I used a different powder for each caliber . One day I decided I was through using so many different powders . I decided on Shooters World " Auto Pistol " powder for all . So far I am pleased enough that I have bought several more lbs of it . Regards Paul

I just loaded .380, 100gr Hornady with Titegroup. See Hodgdon web site for data.

Bullet weight , jacketed , plated , coated lead , cast lead ?
Again those pesky details ... but in reloading , they matter .

For me, given the same approximate muzzle energy rounds with heavier bullets have a slower recoil impulse. Less sharp and more of a push sums it up.

Depends on the burn rate of the powder.

If you have it use Bullseye or your fastest powder and then your slowest powder in maximum loads.

Some people can feel the difference in the type of recoil form the two powders............
however I use the powder that gives me the best accuracy, be it fast or slow.

Have fun.

Titegroup. It's not case sensitive and has minimal muzzle flash.

You should consult a reloading manual or Hodgdon's reloading data center to determine safe powder charge weights for what you are doing.

Thank you. My manuals suggest starting with a load about 10 % below the maximum load. The maximum load of Longshot being 7.5 grains. Ten % less would be 6.75 grains. It actually suggests starting with 6.3 grains with a 180 grain bullet. Does this seem right?

I’m sure there are many good powders to work either the 40 or the 380. I guess working with them to find the performance I like the best at the target.

That matches with the Hodgdon web site. I would typically start, if I was working up loads, at 6.5 gr and work up to maybe 7.3 gr.

I tried ramshot Zip in 9mm . I wasn't real impressed . Using almost max load , barely cycled the action . I found it best in revolvers , 38 spl and 45 Colt . Regards Paul

What is the best place to start with selecting the load, approximately 10% below maximum?

I have a question too, .40 cal

I have some 180gr hard cast TC over 6.4 gr of AA#5, 925 fps that I must have bought at a gunshow, never shot it.

AA tables say this is too hot a load, anybody shoot hard cast with this powder???

The Lee manual has 6.0 grains of A#5 as the maximum load.(for the 40S&W).

I used to load rifle cartridges when I had a farm in the Allegheny Mountains about 30 years ago. I stopped then and started again now as I missed it. I think there have been many improvements since then. It’s basically the same but a lot of new information.
