Cartel Ammo
Maybe some of our LEO forum members can enlighten us as to where the Mexican Cartels are getting their ammo. By all the news reports I see and my cousins who live in Laredo ,they sure are shooting a lot. Are they buying from US factories through a cutout front or are they importing from Russia, China and Brazil ?

I suspect that the Mexican army and police ammo stocks are more convenient and much less expensive than buying from overseas or across the boarder.

We are not talking about small time thugs or minor criminal gangs with little influence outside a small area. The Mexican cartels have a world-wide footprint in every business and industry that exists. They have little difficulty obtaining anything and everything they wish to have, and very few obstacles in moving (literally) tons of US dollars in cash anywhere to achieve any goal, all fueled by an insatiable demand for drugs in the United States.
Additionally, the cartels operate with relative impunity within Mexico. Politicians, journalists, bankers, police, and military commanders are owned by the cartels. It is not an exaggeration to say that the cartel bosses are on a par with, if not superior to, any government agency that exists in Mexico.
An unfortunate truth is that most of Latin America has a history of absolute corruption at every level. In everyday commerce nothing can happen without payoffs to every level of bureaucracy. Any measure applied to the various groups of powerful or influential interests in Mexico is limited only to the level of corruption, not any absence of corruption. There is no history or human memory of any other way to live or to do business.
Beautiful country, rich culture, warm and wonderful people, all ruled by despotic thugs and aristocratic arrogance.
Small arms ammunition? No problem, send a couple of lawyers to buy the company. The lawyers will not fail because they know that their families' survival depends on their success.
Problems with customs officials at a port of entry? No problem, send someone to show those officials photographs of their wives and children, their homes, their schools, their pets, their friends at a nice party.
Several of the major Mexican cartels have wealth and influence that exceeds many national governments, and literally armies of mercenary gangs to enforce their will in every way.

Mexico has an ammo factory. I believe Remington built it in the 60's.
Cartels can probably buy just about any ammo they want from Aguila.

And that presumes that the cartel boss doesn't own a controlling interest in Aguila, or can buy it if he wants to.

Most certainly.
The cartels literally import hundreds of tons of methamphetamine ingredients direct from China, literally by the ship.
The cartels are the controlling interests in the Mexican Rivera and the Western resorts, so when you vacation there, your dollars are helping to laundering their illicit dollars. That also helps keep it so safe.
There is an argument about how much is sourced in the US versus the international trade, but likely the US domestic market sourcing proves to be a bigger time waster of federal law enforcement resources for individual purchases than big international deals.
If the bad guys want Norinco to provide 2000 of the Chinese MP5 or M16 copies, I believe they can find the cash to make it happen.

LOL, the 50 cents to $1 a round that we scream about doesn't even appear as a blip on their radar.
"$1000 for 1000 rounds? Meh, here's 10 Benjamins, now gimme my ammo, I want take my fully auto AK47 and go blow off 1000 rounds at my private range today."
With the kind of money they have to burn, the cost of ammo doesn't even cross their minds.

Money is always operating with immunity . If you have it you make your own rules.

Did a word search on your article. "Ammunition" appears once, related to 74 rounds possessed by an arrestee. In the U.S.

Dont judge other countries by American standards. Without import restrictions, there are a wealth of sources globally for ammo.

Who says they buy ammo? Perhaps they steal it from police or even military armories.

ANSWER!
Most of the cartels have a way of obtaining 7.62X 39 caliber rifles; thus they can import/ trade illegal goods for ammo. And of course if you have the $$$ you can operate with impunity. I have taken firearms from criminals that couldn't tell me where they obtained the ammo( hint: not legally). So no big surprise here.

There is Communist ammo stacked all over Africa and Middle East.
If there is major money to be made in ammo the crooks will get into black market ammo. They shut down booze in prohibition and black market sprang up over night.
