Went to my local gun store to do some paperwork today and he showed me a brick, 500 rnds., of Remington .22. The new price to him is now $175, yes $175. Who is going to pay that much for .22? He showed me Ammo Seek and, I forget which company, is selling .22 for that much. I just might have enough .22 to retire again, but then, if I want to shoot, what is a guy going to do? I have many grand and greatgrand kids that come to my house to shoot .22, just like shooting BB guns. I think gun control is going to be thru ammunition.

Used to be steel case was far inferior and would be quite a bit less per round. Then came the shortage and no matter brass or steel case. Pistol or rifle round. Your talking upwards of $1 per round. I went to the gun show here a couple weeks ago. $45 for 50 9mm. $1+ for 223. 100 count packs of primers for $30. A lonely looking guy trying to hock 1pound canisters of powder for $100 a piece.

That is totally insane. Maybe I should tap my .22 stash and become semi-wealthy. I could probably spare some for that kind of money.

Was at the local Gander Outdoors several days ago. The only rifle ammo they had was some .22 magnum and Red Army Brand (Russian) .223. The .223 was $9.00 for a box of 20 - limit one if not a "Good Sam Club" member and three if you were.

Didn't buy any ammo but picked up some Rio 5Wt Fly Line (Made in USA) I needed on clearance for 1/2 price. They are discontinuing their fly fishing gear so all that stuff is clearance priced. (I am not a Good Sam member).

I’m not buying what he is shoveling. I just bought 600 rounds (2X 300) of CCI minimags for about $44. I’m certainly not paying $175 or more for bulk Remington.

Someone is getting robbed at your LGS. If you're buying it, it's you. If your LGS is paying $175 a brick, then it's them. I'm not sure buying ammo at 400% of it's value and expecting to sell it at a profit is a good business model. I don't believe that the market will support those prices. People desperate for ammo might buy some but I question weather the recreational shooters, the ones who really support the shooting industry, will be able. Most of the people I know can't afford to spend a couple of hundred bucks every weekend just to go to the range. Maybe I just hang with the wrong people!

There is not a shortage of 22 ammo. The big online guys have plenty. I am not ready to pay their prices.
Why do they have plenty and my local gun shop has none. Even local Gander Outdoors and Dunham’s has none.
Are they paying the big suppliers more then jacking up prices?
One seller on the big auction site has 94,000 rounds of 22s. Range from 21 to 45 cents a round. Where did he get all those?

My local LGS didn't buy the .22 ammo at that price, he was just showing me what was available. I just went to Ammo Seek . com and the prices are all over the place for the .22, mostly over $100/500. Don't know what has triggered the sudden jump in price, with the exception of greed.

Earlier this week Sportsman’s Wearhouse had the 500 ct Remington Thunderbolts for around $25. Should have grabbed a box (1 box limit). I did snag a 50 ct box of federal .45 acp and Sig 10mm, $23 and $29 respectively, and 250 box of Berry’s 230 gr for $44.

Ammoseek .38spl $1.40-$3.30round didn't bother checking .357. LGS has factory seconds Federal .22LR 325ct box $25 was $18 couple weeks ago.

So at Dunhams today:
A few boxes of oddball rifle calibers
5 boxes of 45 Colt 250 gr lead
A box of 32 S&W Long and 41 Long Colt
357 Sig locked in the display case
A fair number of boxes of waterfowl shotshells (steel) and some turkey loads.
And... some cases of Remington 12 Gauge target loads, at normal retail price! Should I have grabbed one... it's not quite time for me to hit the skeet range so I left them for the hardy souls who shoot through the depths of winter.

Here is a new twist on the old saying;

"You didn't just buy a little early, you paid too much."

The shortage is real, and will get worse before it gets better, if it ever does.

If one or more ammo companies are forced out of business, ( and there are people with the clout to do just that working on making that happen ), it will really be bad for a long time

Everybody should sit on what the have and not buy any ammo that is priced outrageously. Let the gougers choke, fear and greed is driving this insanity.

It is my belief that your are correct, this is why people are paying inflated prices for bricks of 22 LR ammo. It is called the fear of the unknown. Sit on what you have and watch, we all hope the panic subsides and prices are reduce, but I do not believe we will ever see prices lower that they were last year. Our world has gone crazy on prices and people should stop buying at these prices. It is sad to see the empty shelves in the LGS.

Not going to happen, far to many new gun owners looking for ammo, and they want it now. Some have more the enough money to pay the crazy prices.

This madness is to a large extent being driven by politics, and in that, this may be just the start. When and if the new administration calls for additional laws, this will continue or accelerate.

So either you are wildly mistaken about where your local shop owner gets his ammo -OR- your local shop owner is completely out of his ever loving mind.

Gun store owners don’t buy their stock from suggestions on AmmoSeek.

If he actually expressed to you the idea that he is INTENDING to pay $175 for a brick of .22 then it sounds like he is trying to groom you for (insert words that got me a three day suspension the last time I used them.)

If your go-to gun store is even hinting to you that he plans to pay $175 for 500 rounds of .22LR then god help you for giving this man any of your time or business.

Sevens: read post #8. The owner has no intentions of paying the outlandish prices, he was just showing me what is available. He had one brick of Remington Thundersomething for $30, the only .22 he had. All of the ammo is getting difficult for the small store to purchase and reasonably resell for a bit of profit.
