Default Came across some old ammo

Hey guys,

I was helping my 87 year old Grandpa clean out his house the other day and he gave me a bunch of boxes of old ammo. This being one of the oldest. Anyone have any knowledge/info on these things? I'm assuming this is what they call a wadcutter. He told me that a retiring policeman gave them to him years ago.

Food for a starving Model 52!!
You could use in a revolver but the 52 is a special place for them. Should be very accurate.

Yep, wadcutters. Named for the fact they cut a clean circular hole in paper targets.

Wadcutters. What we used back in the 1970's for police training and qualification on our S&W Model 10's.

I am guessing the SR on the headstamp means Service Revolver. Anyone know for sure?

That bullet design looks a lot like the factory Remington bullet that
if have on stock.

They shoot great but the ones for reloading have a messy powder/wax on them that gets all over everything !!

Best used in a M52 if you have one but they will also work in any revolver, no big thing.

Enjoy.

Default 38AMU, not Reg 38 Wadcutter

Those cartridges appear to be 38AMU, designed for the Model 52A (rare) or Colts chambered in that cartridge. The SR on the headstamp stands for "Semi-Rimmed", and the boxes should be so marked. They have an extractor groove cut into the cases, and the rim should measure about .401-.403. They are like regular .38 wadcutter in other respects, and will normally fire just fine in revolvers, but the case head is a bit smaller than regular .38 special.

While certainly shootable, they may have more value to someone who has a Model 52A, or one of the Colt conversions.

Just a thought.

RWJ nailed it! 38 Special Semi-Rimmed, for semi-auto pistols chambered in 38 Special Wadcutter. Rare find these days.
