No, no need for the Prevagen. Have a couple of room for guns, ammo, reloading equipment and a collection of firearms related stuff.

Let's hope that this is the case. It's nice to think that the gun buying frenzy is the product of scared law-abiding citizens, but it could also be fueled by the awakened closet anarchists that have been awakened by this past summer's peaceful protests!

I stopped at the local gunshop/range a week ago. During that visit they had maybe a dozen handguns on display. A couple days later, their counter display of handguns increased by about 8 Sig P365s. Yesterday I stopped in, and they had close to 50 handguns on display, virtually all were semiautomatics. Not a full-sized pistol could be found, all seemed to be subcompacts or smaller, ideal for concealed carry in a state that doesn't permit the public to carry concealed!

Another panic that will end, just like the others. Don't buy high, and when stuff dies down go ahead and stack it deep. I've got enough to shoot sometimes, but honestly I've been having way more fun fishing, hunting (if you are good at it you might use a lot of ammo, thankfully my burn is low), hiking, mountain biking, and trying new beers. Treat occasional insanity as part of the hobby, this one will pass, we'll get good prices, and then in 2026 or whenever we'll be seeing all these same posts again.

When into the local Sports Afield store to today. They had a shelf full of Remington 9mm FMJ, 17.99 a box with 2 box limit. Picked up 2 boxes for one of my coworkers. She and her husband like to shoot together but have no luck finding ammo.

First time I have seen it on the shelf in months. They had 9mm, . and 45. 200 hundred boxes of each.

You got lucky! Around here 9 MM starts at $35.00 a box. The Big Box stores never have any on the shelf.

LOL, I hear ya. I've got ammo cached in four different rooms. I recently decided to take an inventory, and I found 300 rounds of 9mm I didn't know I had. Beats paying $600 for them at Cheaper Than Dirt.

It's gouging when we're the ones impacted. This isn't gas or water at $20/gallon during a hurricane evacuation, it's items related to your hobby being sold at higher prices than usual. Just like the last panics, I'm not going to shop at cheaperthandirt again, but I'm also not going to be mad at the LGS for charging what they can get for the limited quantities of ammo they can get.

“Ammo prices and heart palpitations...”

Learn the valsalva maneuver and use when needed at your LGS.

Common handgun and rifle cartridges, if you can find them, are close to, or even well over, $1 per round. Quality American-made handgun rounds are even more expensive: Hornady 9mm JHP, 25 rounds for $48!

But what really caused my jaw to drop was seeing a 525-round "Value Pack" of Federal .22LR priced at $190...and Remington Thunderbolt .22LR at $185 for a brick!

I literally did a double take and checked to make sure I was reading that right. Friends, I think we have a whole new definition of the word "insanity"...
But according to "The Jasons'"....they are ON IT and getting that ammo out. We're all imagining that there's no ammo hitting store shelves across the country. According to the Jasons' it's all a conspiracy theory. They are pumping out millions of rounds a day 7 days a week!

Where the heck it's all going to is anyone's guess but I can tell you where it's NOT going....

Midway USA, Cheaper Than Dirt, Brownell's, No sporting good stores or gun stores in 99% of AZ, Ammo.com, Ammunition Depot , Academy Sporting Outdoors Online, Palmetto State Armory, Lucky Gunner, Cabela's, Sportsman's Guide, Gorilla Ammo, Sportsman's Warehouse, Optics Planet or any of the other 23 dozen online retailers of ammo.
And if they do have something it's 1 box of some oddball Russian "MM" round no one has ever heard of before.

But we're all just imagining things according to " The Jasons' ".

Sounds about right for these days.

I was in a little country store about 30 miles from here and saw three fifty-round boxes of Winchester .22LR. I did a double-take, as I thought they were marked $1.85. Well, I wasn't wearing my reading glasses, and they were actually priced at $18.50! Each!

That's a great response to high ammo prices. The valsalva maneuver can stop the palpitations and evacuate the lower intestines all at once. While your body will appreciate it, your LGS might not.

Not that anyone on this board would do it, but I have seen so many instances of LGS, Dunhams, or Rural King put ammo on shelves at reasonable prices only to see local Armslist ads the next day selling this same ammo at 3-5 times the purchase price.

I was at a Dunhams a few weeks ago that had Remington range fodder at 13.99 with a 3 box limit and saw one couple with their son buy the limit at least 3 times in the 20 minutes I was in there.

So why should any retailer sell at pre-panic prices when a large part of their inventory is going to be bought just to be resold by ammo pigs?

Its been like that for months.

And its only going to get worse.

Overseas ammo shipments will be gone very soon, and then all online sales will be shutdown

Shooting sports will be only for the rich man, oh yes, its coming.

People will look back on the Golden Years when $1 per rd ammo was available.

Wow, you may be right, but I hope you aren't. I remember after Sandy Hook the price of ammo was crazy. Just as an example though , I will use .22 ammo because I had just happened to buy a case of Federal bulk 525 boxes (5250 rounds) the week before. I had paid $170 shipped for the case which I thought was good. The weekend after SH, there was a gunshow in my city. I had a table. I had brought my recently purchased case of .22's to sell. I put one box on my table and marked it $50. Around 5 minutes later, the dealer who was setting up a few tables down from me, came by and asked if he could by it . I sold it to him and left the rest under my table.

The next morning as I was heading to my table, I passed the guy who bought the .22's. He told me he had sold the box to another dealer for $65! I was shocked! When the show opened , I sold the rest of the case for a lot of money on the first day. I had people coming to my table and asking i"are you the guy with the .22 ammo?" When I got home that night, I had a decision to make. I had about 5000 more rounds of various manufacturers. I decided ammo prices would return to "normal" pretty soon and took all but 500 rounds of CCI back to the show the next day. I sold all but 100 rounds.

Well, it wasn't only the price of .22 ammo that was the problem for a long time after that show. It was the fact that you could NEVER find any in stock! As you remember, it took years for the supply to catch up with demand. People, then, were saying that the low priced .22 days would never be seen again, and we better get used to the new normal. I just look back at my Palmetto State Armory orders and in January of last year, before all the "crazy" started, I bought a case of Winchester Black box bulk .22 ammo (4 X 1100) for $160 shipped. So, the case I bought before SH cost 3.2 cents per round, and the case I bought last year cost 3.6 cents per round. That was almost 10 years apart, so I think that is pretty good!

Long story......longer, we may never see "the good ole days" again, but I hope we do!

Not so sure. Most real supporters already had guns. Most of these buyers, and I know quite a few in Cali, are not interested in joining the NRA, or gun rights in general, they just did a panic buy. In fact, a few asked me how many rounds they needed to fill the gun so my theory is the old schoolers were hoarding/stocking up.

I'll just be delving more into my stock of .22 ammo, some of which goes back to the Gerald Ford/Ronald Reagan years.....

Prices for ammo are "jawdropping". I get ads from Cheaper than dirt... they seem to be able to get ammo. Midway and Natchez also have sales. But the prices will only go higher with no end in sight ...

Another happy day........last weekend I found 4500 rounds of .22 LR that I had forgotten that I had. Today while cleaning out a bag I carry to a .22 Steel Match at the local range, I found 500 more rounds!! I guess I better keep looking.

Exactly and this is totally different from any prior ammo shortage issues. There may very well be no return to normal. Also Federal and CCI are selling boxes for lot I mean a lot more than they used to and rarely have anything in stock. They are not magically going to go back to old prices when they have dug into the greed and making piles more of cash. Just my 2 cents.

Also like someone mentioned the really only good people in this ammo crisis has been the big box stores like Walmart and Cabelas which is sad to say but are still selling ammo for around the same price. I used to love supporting local mom and pop shops but those days are done once I seen all the greed of ripping people off. Now I could care less if they stay open or not anymore.

Just like with anything else, like toilet paper. If people didn't get into the "panic" mode, and bought ammo like they always did, nothing would have changed...just like with the TP shortage, now it's everywhere again.

People are the problem, not the market supply. JMHO

You might get in contact with older gun owners or their surviving spouses to inquire about their supply being available.

Local shop has this ad....$17 for 20...not good, but still 85 cents per..of course i paid 20 cents for primers, 30 cents for bullets....if I didn't have cases it might not look too bad...

As I've read this and many other threads here and elsewhere, I've been struck by one thing... the sheer scope of shortages... this is the first time I remember across the board shortages of anything that goes bang... rimfire, centerfire pistol, centerfire rifle (large and small), shotgun (all gauges) and reloading components (especially primers, of course.) Like Obama, Biden certainly is a great encouraging influence on guns and ammo sales, and when you add to that civil unrest the overall concern about a worldwide pandemic, it is indeed the perfect storm. Oh yeah, Global Warming probably has something to do with it too!

You’re right. If everyone stopped buying toilet paper we would not be thinking about ammo prices.

I'm glad that I'm not causing any of the current ammo problem.
I finished buying in Jan. last year. Larry

This situation leaves me in a bit of a quandary. I learned my lesson from past shortages. I have a good supply of ammo and have components to make more.
I could sell off some of it at a ridiculous profit. After all, more money is always nice. However, I'm financially sound and really don't need the cash.
OTOH, I'm not shooting either. The problem being that if I shoot my ammo, will I be able to replace it in the future at a reasonable cost?
So basically, I'm just sitting on my stockpile and doing nothing with it.
Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

As for getting back to normal... I believe the supply will catch up and prices will go down. However, they will never go back to what just a year ago was normal.

We say that every panic, and between the last one and this current one ammo prices were about as cheap as they've ever been. Sell the stuff you don't need, enjoy other hobbies, do what you want. Even if you're right, you'll still have been paid way more than the eventual replacement price. I sold a bunch of guns and ammo during panic and regret none of it. Granted, I didn't ask full market, but enough to make a healthy process and give what counts as a "deal" these days.

Let's get real. There is no "gouging," whatever that is.

Conservatives extol the free market as a gift from God and the natural order of things . . . . Until Adam Smith's invisible hand marks 9mm at a buck a shot. Then they squall about "gouging."

In a free market, buyers, not sellers, set the prices
That's what's going on here. When nobody pays a buck a round, prices will return to the old normal

I was just going to say searching for "deals" online is a waste of time now, but got a tip Super Vel (the new company version) was selling their 9mm +p 115gr SCHP at last years prices for defensive ammo.

Snagged a few boxes before it went OOS, yay me, at least one company isnt over pricing.

One critical difference. There wasn't an 8 million increase in the number of people using toilet paper in the last 12 months.

There have been 8 million new first-time gun owners in the last 12 months. Even if they only bought 100 rounds each that is 800 million additional rounds purchased. Most likely have bought 2 or 3 times that much, and few would have been foolish enough to buy less than 100 rounds to go with their new and only gun.

Pretty safe to say that more than an extra billion rounds of ammo were sold this last year - a billion rounds that nobody anticipated.

Oddly, I’m about to be the opposite.

I’m about ready to start getting back into more regular practice ... also Covid related. I was lucky enough to get my second dose this past Friday. Once immunity kicks in, I won’t have to keep hiding my compromised immune system from the world to stay healthy. I can’t wait, and at the same time am concerned about how much rust I’ve picked up - I haven’t dropped the hammer on a live round since around Halloween. (& before that it was April) Marksmanship (especially with handguns) is a perishable skill.

Dry-fire practice simply ain’t the same. And since I only shot around 200 rounds total in the last year, my ammo pile is basically still intact.

I look at the prices boxes of ammo are going for, and start to wonder if I can afford to actually fire all of my stash. I mean, of course I can - I bought them to shoot them. But, I’m wondering if it would be financially irresponsible to ignore a potential 600% return on a consumable resource.

These prices are making the idea of selling some look extremely tempting. Especially considering that these panics keep happening periodically in cycles, and we’re very likely going to eventually be able to replace it cheap again relatively soon. (Can’t see this continuing a whole lot longer than it already has)

Nowhere near the whole stack, mind you. I’m not nuts. LOL

It just seems like a helluva opportunity to make some $$$ on an extra 1 or 2,000 rounds of 9mm that others are fighting each other to pay through the nose for. Then hold the loot, and later turn it back into 5 times what you sold.

Like everyone else has already said I feel like I have my own personal bank vault in the basement with all the previously purchased ammunition.

And as well I also have not been to the range in a very long time. I just cheap enough that I'll practice with one of those laser dry fire systems.

On the issue of price, I know likely none of us have to worry about a safari level rifle but the cost of that ammo caught my eye the other day. A box of 10 505 Gibbs 248.00. I'm guessing you don't use up much of that.

At the last local gun show there was a man selling what he presented as an "Estate Sale". He had 9 boxes of .375 H&H and was asking $40 a box. My friend has a .375 H&H and uses it in Africa about every other year. He was looking at it and the guy said if you take them all he would make it $30 a box. So for $270 he bought them all. I looked them up on line and they were on sale for $96 a box. So deals can be had.

Decided to check our local sporting goods store that I like and while they are currently out of stock but soon to be replenished. A bucket of 1400 .22LR is 79.99.

Better than the prices in this thread for sure. But I am in Arizona so there is that.

If it is out of stock, you still can't afford it........... Hope for your sake that they get it back in and at the same price.

I gave my SIL ammo for Christmas.
45ACP, 12GA and 22LR.
One of the boxes of 22s was a Federal Value pack.
I just hope he appreciates what I gave him!

I have Plenty of Ammo,Powder, and Primers but I'm totally disgusted with the Present Conditions. I locked up all of my guns in the safe except my EDC, and got back into Ham Radio for a While. My Range is closed due to Covid19. I could shoot in the backyard but I don't want to P/O my Neighbors.

Conversely on the other side of the state our range is open. Almost straight across SR 60. Come on over!

So, if you don't shoot it, what's the sense of having it? I'm shooting it now and enjoying my retirement. If I run out, I'll use my bow and error....LOL.

The option is to sit in the house and look out the window. Then when I die my kids can take it all to the LGS and he'll give them 5c a round and they'll think that's OK.

Having a full ammo locker that can't be shot, or an empty one and memories of shooting it all - that's the choice.
