Ammo prices and heart palpitations...
So...last night I was doing a little web surfing to check out the latest ammunition prices. I don't really need anything, but I was wondering if the situation is improving...and the answer seems to be no.
Common handgun and rifle cartridges, if you can find them, are close to, or even well over, $1 per round. Quality American-made handgun rounds are even more expensive: Hornady 9mm JHP, 25 rounds for $48!
But what really caused my jaw to drop was seeing a 525-round "Value Pack" of Federal .22LR priced at $190...and Remington Thunderbolt .22LR at $185 for a brick!
I literally did a double take and checked to make sure I was reading that right. Friends, I think we have a whole new definition of the word "insanity"...

I have stopped the casual shooting side of my gun hobby. If I don't absolutely have to shoot, I don't. Oddly enough the COVID situation makes this quite easy.

Even shotgun ammunition is affected. It wasn’t during the 2014 ammo shortage.
Those that have stocked up are counting their blessings. Those that didn’t are scrambling.

As I have posted before, if every gun owner in America would stop buying this insanity would end. I bet it would not take more than 60-90 days for the markets to return to normal.

Actually been looking at airsoft guns lately. I can shoot those in my back yard and they aren't any more stupidly expensive then they were before.

I think as more people are encouraged, or forced through necessity, to reduce the demand the supply will start to catch up.

I could sell 1 box of 525 Federal .22's for what I paid for the case. Would take 2 boxes of 9mm to do the same. If'n I knew this was "passing" like evry other "shortage", I might be tempted. I do reckon I've ordered the last case from Target Sports that I'm ever going to be permitted to. Hope to be wrong. Joe

I don't know if it is insanity or just gouging. We should remember who is gouging and when the hysteria is over don't buy from those sellers.

I understand demand has gone through the roof, and production of ammunition is running at full throttle, what I don't understand is why my LGS is getting less ammunition. If my LGS is getting less, and production is more, where is it going if not to my LGS, and why not to my LGS?

Because even the LGS's that are in the back of beyond and normally sell a few boxes of deer rifle rounds and maybe some handgun rounds are suddenly overrun with people who will buy anything, as long as it's ammo. 6.38MM Schutzen*******? I'll take 3 boxes! Now they order more to resupply and there is less to go around for all gun stores. Also, even though it sucks, the factories are gonna sell first to the big boys and then take care of the mom and pop stores.

Suppliers do not generally sell directly the mom and pop stores. They buy from distributors who may buy from another distributor. When you are at the end of the supply chain and have relatively low overall sales, your bark isn't going to resonate.

And yet one of the gougers of the past crisis is back at it again and while they offer prices that are less than the ground we walk on, in my opinion, their business tactics are lower than the top soil I tread.

I've been laying in the .22 LR for a while . That's going to be my primary range ammo until who knows when . I only have a couple of cases of 9mm so it's being rationed .

A guy on our local gun forum posted about some ammo he sold at a local auction house. He listed about $300 worth of ammo and it sold for nearly $1500. Even after giving the auction house 15% he netted over $1250 - around 4x what it all cost him a year or so ago.
With several thousand rounds of 22 in my stock - all bought at an average cost of around 5 cents a round - I'm seriously thinking about putting some in the auction myself. If people are happy to pay 5 or 6 times what I have into it, I have to admit to being sorely tempted.

I bought quite a bit of handgun ammo by the case from them the last 3 or 4 yrs before this happened. Good sellers and free ship. No tax back then either......

Me too!
If I sold all my 22, 9mm, 40, and 5.56 ammo I have I could probably buy a select fire Norell trigger pack for one of my 10/22's.
But then I wouldn't have any ammo for it.

Pre-pandemic, I thought if someone broke in they’d try to steal the guns to sell on the black market. Now I’m thinking they’d leave the guns and steal the ammo.

At the local gun show yesterday, that brick was selling for $60. I undercut the guy and sold a couple at $55 . . .

I agree to a certain extent. I do think prices will come down eventually but I don't think they will ever be close to pre-panic levels. That box of 525 .22 rounds that I used to buy for $18 will never happen again, but $30 might.

Very good point to all who complain about the current market prices. I'd rather have the option of paying ridiculous prices if I wish than have no option to buy at any price.

I find it hard just to find ammo during these snow covered days,
Some good marbles or rocks for my slingshot....But even the squirels and rabbits have hunkered down during the cold and snow. So hunting has been sort of slow.
And another thing, being old and poor and on a fixed income, I can't afford those high big box prices. So I've had to be content to go to some of the local estate auctions and have found lots and lots of .22 ammo for sale, but even there, the bidding prices have gone up to what I would consider tin can at the dump shooting prices for .22 ammo.

I have gotten into airguns. They are a lot of fun you can trick them out for less than 2 boxes of 9mm ammo ( current price). I made my own pellet trap, and there are no range fees in my basement.

Ahhhh, the summer of 2019. There was still hope for the country and ammo had finally settled down from the previous shortage a few years back. I started reducing my meager firearms collection and concentrating on .22, .38 spec, 9mm and .45. Ammo was cheap enough I could almost use it for ballast in the back of the PU. So by luck more than planning I bought enough ammo to last me a while and longer. Probably the only luck I've had since Karen in highschool in '62.
Supposedly 7 million new gun owners last year. And the gun buying newbies ain't letting up. 7 million which each new owner buying (or trying to buy) 2 boxes of ammo equals 700,000,000 rounds just to satisfy new gun owners. Unless my cypherin is defunct.

When was the last time you humped 2, 50 cal ammo cans of 45ACP across the backyard?? Glad I'm old, cause I'd not be able to do the daddy routine. Heavy cans make for slow moving crooks!

Makes me really think of selling 10 cases of .22 LR ammo acquired in 2019. Heck, I could just about buy a new vehicle with the profit.

I've been thinking I might have a little ammo too sell at these unreal prices and make a little money. BUT what would I do with the money. I don't really need the money for food or lodging. Put the money in the bank and I think the way things are going inflation will eat it up. There isn't anything I can think of too buy that I had rather have than ammo so I think I will shoot some of my supply and keep some for when ammo gets really scarce. Larry

The ammo prices these days give new meaning to the old saying:
"He's not worth the price of a bullet!"

I have about 4000 rds of 22 ammo accumulated over the last 8 years or so. I haven't shot 1000 rds of 22 on the past 10 years, so maybe i should sell some? Nah...

The shortages and demand are a good thing - it means there are that many more gun owners, that many more who will support of the 2A, that much more resistance to those fighting to convert our type of government.

I have pondered about selling ammo, or selling or swapping some primers that I have no use for. Then I figured if I put that on Craigslist or something local, that means people will know who has guns and ammo stocked up. Makes you a target. Cartridges are like coins now. And I don't want to mess with hazardous shipping or whatever the online sales entail. I think I will just hold on to what I got. Although I would love to trade something like large magnum rifle primers for small pistol and have more of those. Or even powder.

I shot four cylinders of CCI standard velocity 22 rimfire through a Model 17 today.
Standing at the burn barrel and shooting at the steel targets that are 30 feet away I noticed something.
I can't hit any better with 22 ammo that's worth .15 cents a round any better than when it was .04 cents a round.

Was rearranging the closet where I store ammo today. Had a pleasant surprise. I found 4500 rounds of .22 LR that I had stashed in an ammo crate a couple of years ago and forgotten about. Like winning the lottery. Also found a full crate of 7.62X39 (1100 rounds) that I also forgot I had bought. Don't think a lottery ticket will be any good as I have already won today.

I think I could sell my ammo stash and retire.
But I'm already retired.
So I could sell it and go on a round-the-world cruise.
But cruise ships aren't operating.
Oh well, I guess it's time to go to the range -- if I can find one that's open.

I read Friday that January this year 2.2 million more guns were sold. Sales were up 80% from January 2020. Sales don’t seem to be letting up either. I was in o e of the LGS and a guy came in and asked if he had 9mm. The owner said yes and the price was $47 for range ammo. The customer took 4 boxes and looked at me and said “ got to take care of the house”. I figure he was meaning the family. He asked about hollow points and the owner had some but didn’t hear the price.
I had a dentists appointment Friday and went to the gun shop around the corner. They had a very limited quantity of ammo but I didn’t ask the price. If you want to know what’s expensive it’s dental work. I had a bridge that had to be replaced and the price was north of $3000. My wife is having an implant. One tooth that she cracked, who knows how, For north of $4000. I figured that at 2 Colt single action Army’s and 2 new Pythons. Ouch! Ammo isn’t that bad now.
I do hate seeing people paying out the nose for ammo but have to admit I laid in a good bit of supplies and ammo over the past few years. I reload but bought a bunch from Walmart when they quit selling handgun ammo. A friend of mine has a little gun shop here in town and hasn’t been able to get much ammo so we came to a fair price and I sold I’m a quantity of my surplus and funded a new Winchester 1892 carbine. He was so grateful he paid me more than we agreed on and we’re both happy.

Great find! Now you have no need to stock up on ammo, but it's time to stock up on Prevagen.
