The option is to sit in the house and look out the window. Then when I die my kids can take it all to the LGS and he'll give them 5c a round and they'll think that's OK.

Having a full ammo locker that can't be shot, or an empty one and memories of shooting it all - that's the choice.
You really can't take it with you. Enjoy it while you can, maybe stretch it out a bit so it lasts longer, but use it up. Let the kids buy their own.

On the issue of price, I know likely none of us have to worry about a safari level rifle but the cost of that ammo caught my eye the other day. A box of 10 505 Gibbs 248.00. I'm guessing you don't use up much of that.
Yeah, I doubt that sees many 5 round yearly groups just to verify zero.

It is my plan to pare my handgun collection down to 22, 380, 38/357, and 45acp and leave my children and grandchildren at least 5000 rounds of each centerfire caliber and a lot more in 22lr.
I work at an indoor range and pre-China Virus and election panic it was not uncommon to have customers come in and shoot over a thousand rounds per session. We had a competitor that would come in three times per week and run 800 rounds downrange each visit.
As for letting my kids buy their own? Better pay attention to who is currently running the government.

I guess I’m adjusting to the New Reality.
Just yesterday, bought 500 rounds of CCI 22LR at Cabelas.
10 Cents a round.
Maybe an Old Dog can learn new tricks.
Even if reluctantly.

When it gets that bad you probably won't be allowed to own a gun. Hate to say that. Hopefully, I am wrong. Even with 8 million new gun owners I am not sure how things are headed. I am sure the next year will be a good indicator.

That's my philosophy, too. I can't take it with me, so I'm sending it downrange.

I may not be able to take it with me, but planning on a 20,000 round salute we I go.

Is that all? Actually I am hoping to shoot up a lot of it. When I go I want to go like a friend's Father. He was cremated, and his ashes were placed in a muzzle loading cannon. Everyone had a glass of Crown Royal as he was shot out over a lake he loved.

Tuesday is my indoor range day. Always take 3 guns. Today I only shot 80 .22's and 25 each of .357 and .380. So, yes I'm being conservative.

The 2 guys next to me only shot about 20 rounds each total. I guess their inventory is less than mine.

Actually, I couldn't hit the target worth a darn. That accounts for my early leave. But at least I didn't hit the floor or the ceiling.

Come to think of it, I don't think my problem was my bifocals or my arthritis. It's the TWO MASKS that made me shoot bad. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

We go three days a week. Two days of benchrest and one day of handguns. On the benchrest days it is 50-100 rounds. On handgun days I shoot up to 200 rounds.

I have the same problems of bifocals and arthritis. No masks to blame as we are social distanced on our shooting stations.
