I graduated HS in 1974. The discounter behind where I worked treated ammo as a seasonal item. Starting Labor Day weekend ammo was on sale, it had to be gone by Thanksgiving for the Christmas inventory, So I started buying when the 79 cent a box 22's hit 50% off! I still have several thousand of 1970's Thunderbolt and Wildcat, I bought at 75% off the 79 cent list price. Several years ago a Target shooter approached me for Thunderbolts. He had an Old Anschutz 2000 and that was the ammo it loved. I sold him one brick for $80, and he was very grateful! My Anschutz prefers Eley Club Plus or Team, I have several pre shortage 2008 bricks that cost $100-120, in that time frame, the top of the line Eley and Lapua 22's were $21-25/50 rounds! There is gouging and then there is the fact "Quality Costs!"

When you don't know what you are looking at it all looks like gouging.

Like many here my supply of .22 LR exceeds 5,000 rounds. Not feeling to bad about passing up chances to buy ammo in 2017 to 2019. Wish I had bought more in the 1980's but money was much tighter back then.

February 7 I got a 1k box of Winchester M-22 for $46.99 at Walmart.

I'm thinking Rudi saw Golden Bullet 525 packs.
The Yellowjacket was a premium, hyper velocity varmint round and was quite accurate for a 1500+ fps round.
They would blow the bejeezus out of ground squirrels.
Like you said, they never sold them in bulk packs.

I have really liked the Golden Bullet ammo I've shot the last couple years. They all go off, no damaged rounds, are decently accurate, and no golden "pixie dust" on your fingers or in the bottom of the box.

The Golden Bullets are much improved from their low point of 5 -10 years ago, most guys that hate on them haven't tried any of the recent production GBs.
They aren't as accurate as the Mini-mags I buy, but they are half the price, fine for plinking or shorter range hunting.

Walmart hasn't jacked up their prices, I've been buying 525 GB packs for $24.97, and 100 round packs of Mini-mags are still $7.97.
The local ranch store has been getting in the 1500 round buckets of Goldens, price is $95.
It sounded high at first because Walmart sells the buckets for $64 when they get them in, but even at $95 that's just $32 a brick, not bad in today's market.

Good for you!!! Can't be ashamed to be ahead of the game. I bought a number of bricks of .22 years back when a state lawmaker proposed a nickle per round tax on every caliber. Luckily it failed to pass. The odds of similar proposals failing has dropped significantly in the last couple of months.

sadly there are people who shamelessly whine about "ammo hoarders". While they slept, others paid attention and bought.

About a year ago Target Sports had 5,250 rd cases of Federal 36 gr plated hp's for $199 with a $4/box rebate. I bought 2. They had truckloads they were trying to move due to the "***** slump." Nobody called me a "hoarder" then, different now that they are out. I'll probably be a couple years past dead by the time I use those cases. I'm still shooting $9.87 550 rd "Wallyboxes" I bought maybe 15-20 years ago. Joe

$179.00 for a BRICK? Not even premium ammo. I remember not too long ago those went for $10.00. Strange times.

Not so strange, just reading posts here there are guys proud of themselves for picking up a brick of low end rimfire for $50. Besides paying the heavy price they brag they didn’t really need them. Then they all puzzle over why prices are so high. Maybe, just maybe they are part of the problem. If they are worried guns are going to be outlawed their ammo won’t be worth Jack anyway. The black market stuff from overseas will leave them holding the bag. Of course you need the appropriate number of rounds to correspond with how many rolls of wiping paper you are “sitting” on.

I’ve still got some Russian .22 ammo from my y2k stockup and US .22 from before the last drought. Last stuff I bought was CCI standard velocity and cci quiet from midway a couple years ago.

Just bought 4000 rounds of Winchester .22 in the black box for $50 a thousand and 2000 rounds of Federal 5.56mm green tip for $480 a thousand. If I hadn't run out of funds I could have bought Remington 22 for the same price. Remington .38 special 158 grain lead semi wadcutter hollow point +p in 50 round boxes was $21 a box and I got all five boxes.

If my free money comes thru I may have to make another run. I believe I saw some .357 125grain semi jacketed hollow points for $46.99 a hundred round box.

Saturday Sportsman’s Warehouse had 250 ct boxes for $13.99, I was able to snag 4 boxes along with powder, primers, bullets...

I’ll be going to the Big Reno Show next weekend. Can’t wait to watch the silliness. I am contemplating bringing 2-4 pounds of H4350 and a brick or two of SPPs just to see how silly people have become.

They were $7.97 in 05/06 here. I bought a couple a week for the longest time and made a killing selling them to LGSs’ back in 15/16 and recently.

Guns and ammo will never be distressed merchandise.

CCI std. vel. was going for $25 brick in 2019. I bought a case and at the time I thought that was a pretty stupid thing to do with $250. Should have purchased another 3 cases and rounded it up to $1000. It doesn't take up much room and is handily beating stock market returns.

Around 1970ish my dad would buy a brick for $3.50. That converted to $23 dollars today. Bricks in 2000s were $8. Reverse 2010 to 1970 is $1.72. That $49 brick today would be $7.23 in 1970.

1963 or '64 I got my 1st "brick" of Federal .22lr from R&S Home-and-Auto (like a PepBoys with guns and hardware) in NJ for $5.69. The "inflation calculator" says today it would be $49. Ammo has been relatively inexpensive for most of the last 60 years. Joe

I don’t recall hearing about a 50 round box of .22 for .35 in 1970 for your $3.50 a brick. From what I seen and heard was .49 in the early to mid 1960’s.

Those truly were the good old days. Back then, even the Remington Thunderbolt ammo was good!

I went by Academy this morning on a lark after I figured the vultures had picked everything up, so about 9:30. They had all kinds of ammo including 9mm, 45, 38, and others. They had plenty of it and you were limited to 2 boxes of ammo per day. Most of them were in 50 round boxes so hardly a place to stock up.

They did have Remington Thunderbolt .22lr for $29.50 per box of 500. Limit was 2 so I picked up 1000 for about $60. Not too much of an increase over pre-China virus prices. I will go back tomorrow to see if they still have some because they had a bunch of it this morning.

That is a lot of money for the softest lead 22 junk out there. Want to lead your barrel up quick use these. Another inferior product from Big Green

22lr in the Minneapolis area run about 10¢. This year (2021) I have paid as low as 6¢ and I stop at 10¢.

If they were GIVING it away I have no .22LR guns that I think so little of that I would run this excrement through.

Calling it junk is insulting to junk.

Really ? I'm not sure what type of .22 ammo you usually purchase but I don't remember the last time I paid $19.99 per brick . I think the closest I've gotten to that price was CCI Stnd Velo at $24.99 per brick on sale .CCI Mini Mags around $40.00/500 . Most of what I shoot is considerably more ...SK Standard Plus $55.00 per brick & Lapua Center X at a round $115.00-$120.00 per brick and this at pre panic prices. I have no idea how much any of it would be now or if it's even available.
Fortunately I have enough .22 ammo in stock to last for some time.

Back in 2013 &14 the CMP was selling surplus .22 ammo(plain white box/standard velocity) for $92.00/case of 5000.......i stocked up. Also every time I went into Wally world I bought a "milk carton" or 2 of Federals. I'm GTG on .22's.

I have a bucket of goldens and all the lead is loose in the cases
later ones seem fine important when shooting out of a semi dont have a .22 sport but do have a GSG AK .22.
Forget it in my Sig 226 .22 conversion its appetite consists of CCI minis or Federal match 22's
Bought my first bucket 6 years ago at Dicks 59.00 so wally mart is a great deal at 64.00

After the last .22 shortage i stocked up said that would never happen again , well guess what it did and i now have about 5000 RDS of .22 diiferent brands including minis and stingers didn't hoard, this was after they were readily available again

Target bought out most of the Richway stores years ago. This box of cartridges has to be near thirty years old.

Last few bricks I bought had some light loads, but always went bang... Better than the last few boxes of winchester white box super x

I have so much .22LR I can shoot a couple hundred rounds a weekend, and probably last till the end of this shortage...

I started buying right when the last shortage was ending- when bricks went from $50 down to 20-25, I bought a lot... I used to only have .22's and a 12 gauge as well, so I shot like 500 rounds every time I went to the range.

Right around 20 years ago I actually paid less than $19/brick for SK Standard Plus as rebranded Wolf MT. This was from an Ad in the print SGN for $186/case, fresh from Germany. I had ordered a case. The boat arrived in Boston Harbor, but then sat there for 3 months waiting to be unloaded due to the Govt. slow walking the paperwork.

During that time the importer kept us updated as best he could. During that time we had a phone conversation and he asked if I would like to order a second case because the Goverment was not going to ease restrictions on future imports and this was here and only a matter of time before it was released. This made total sense along with my ammo funds being replenished. I added the second case. Also, at that time I was paying $25/brick of CCI SV at Dicks and the savings was considerable over the CCI SV (~$6/brick), plus, it out performed the CCI SV in my M41. A win-win in my eyes.

I just wonder how much the difficulty in importing the SK Standard Plus has played in the dramatic price rise over the past several years? Clearly it is superior ammo, but it is not Match grade and never made that claim.

*I* call it my "serious" plinking ammo and CCI SV is for when the kids want to blast stuff with the 10-22 and such.

I avoid bulk ammo at all times. The "juice isn't worth the squeeze" for junk ammo IMO.

I just got 2 boxes of 100each CCI Standard vel for $10. per box at my local gunshop. He is limiting each customer to two. He is also out of ammo most of the time. Another shop in my area is asking $10.99 for a box of 50 Winchesters and has plenty left. Most of my shooting friends no longer go there due to their pricing practices.

During the slump Target Sports USA was giving free shipping on cases of 22LR. I felt silly running up my credit card bill. Now I'm sitting on 25,000 rounds plus, and not feeling silly.

my son won a 22 off of sportsman supply in butler pa. gun broker site. when he went to pick it up they asked if he needed any 22's. ''$159.00'' a brick, said that was the going price on line. if this wave of prices keep up we the shooting community will destroy our sport ourselves...

Ding, Ding, Ding........That’s what they are banking on. Remember they can’t really take your guns away from you. What they can do is make is hard, miserable, and extremely expensive so you are discouraged.

Talking to my father in law when he was a boy 80+ years ago his father would buy 3 shot gun shells and 5 - 22 shells from the general store. He would bait doves and wait for ten or more to get on a pile before shooting one shot getting a meal of doves. And you didn’t miss when shooting at rabbits.

I just bought a bucket of Remington Golden Bullets (1400 rounds)from a local, private seller for $0.07 per round. Felt like I hit the jackpot.

I think you are correct, I take 5 bricks the cheapest way you can ship it. Thanks for a good deal.

I predict prices may drop a little bit from where they are now, but will still be at least double in price compared to what they were 2 years ago ( not counting inflation, which is getting ready to take off ).
I think availability will be a problem for the foreseeable future because one or more ammo companies will be forced out of business.

WE as ammo buyers are doing this to ourselves. I can't under stand why some one would pay 10 times the cost for something that is temporary out of stock, Now because of this feeding frenzy, in the future the cost of a brick of 22 will be $50 or more.

Every brick or 500 bulk pack of .22LR was $100 on every table at the gun show this morning. I thought it must’ve been a conspiracy lol.
I don’t believe its going to be $50 anymore.
