Thumbs down Brick of .22 ammo

I was checking on the web last nite and a company had a brick of Remington Thunderbolt 22's for 179.00! This will need shipping and sales tax! I think we have reached the point that printers got to a few years ago where the ink cost more than the printer did, I guess maybe if you buy enough ammo they might throw in the gun. Just joking, but I never ever thought .22's would get that high. Jeff

Got an e-mail about 22's in stock same type of pricing. I think the 100 round CCI's were 29 bucks, winchester 333 whitebox was 71.50, 500 round Thunderbolts were 99.99.

These were listed as rimfire ammo specials - on-line only. For those prices I am out. Looks like they are still in stock and will be for a long time as far as I am concerned. I thought 10.00 for the cci per 100 was pricey.

I bought my first gun in the mid-1970's and have seen this game played ever since. I learned long ago to stock up when prices are low, so you're not desperate at times like these.

I know some people think things will only get worse in the future. My ammo prediction: In 2-3 years, prices will be back down close to historical average (adjusted for inflation).

Pull my post up in 2023-4 and tell me how my crystal ball did.

I and others did that some time back.

The year I graduated from college and got my first professional job, I passed by a KMart on the way home every day. Every Friday I would stop and buy an amber plastic box of 100 CCI Mini-mags.

On Saturday morning I would go to the club and shoot them. I always saved the boxes. Now, I buy bulk ammo, and transfer the rounds to the old CCI boxes. Just makes it convenient.

Some of the old boxes still have the old KMart stickers on them.......99 cents.

(EDIT - you know, if you figure it in, since I was only making $115 / week back then, maybe today's prices aren't all that bad)

I saw thunderbolts 500 rd bricks of blazer lead round nose for $88 each today- last time I bought the blazer, I paid $16.50 a brick, and spent $25 a brick for thunderbolt. Sad when .22 is as expensive as 9mm was 2 years ago

Did an ammo inventory in the safe a couple of weeks ago and had 2 bricks of Blazer marked at $8.99. I've got a large amount of CCI Mini Mags in 22 and 22 Mag but it was quite a surprise to to see any brick marked $8.99.

GypsumJim, I remember those times. I was making $120 a week, paying rent, utilities, groceries, and ammo for my Ruger Single-six convertable. 22 mag ammo was even then out of the question, but 99 cent 22's were fine in it.

Recently bought Mini Mags at Cabelas, my preferred 22, $49 for 500 rounds.

If I had twice the amount that I currently have, I'd be a little happier.....

I too still have some old K-Mart 22LR Mini-Mags, but not quite that low in price. These are sealed in a seal-a-meal bag and have never been opened.

The prices are getting crazier. Fortunately, I've stockpiled about 10,000 rounds of various .22LR over the past 4-5 years, so I can sit out this goofiness. This includes about 1,000 rounds of 1990s era Thunderbolts that don't have the issues I hear about the current batches (dirtiness, ignition, etc.)

I did manage to buy some 50-round boxes of my 9mm carry ammo, Federal HST 124 +P Tactical, for $67 a box. Given the current environment, it seemed reasonable to me.

My Walmart had those for $14 on sale about two years ago. I bought several. They got shot up.

I kinda miss the days of Remington 22s coming in those square plastic boxes. Not only did the loaded boxes of 100 rounds fit well into my range boxes and stack well in storage, but they were also perfect for carrying a supply of 2 1/2 X 2 1/2 GI cleaning patches in the range box as well as small parts that were needed in reserve but always getting lost when left loose. Those long, narrow boxes for CCI were also pretty handy for non-mmo storage.

My parents and grandparents reused wooden (and sometimes cardboard) boxes from the depression on, and who hasn’t used cigar boxes for storage? The point being, perhaps one result of these tight ammo times will be a renewal of the frugal ways of our forebears.

Since I have no love for rimfire I just sold 5 boxes of MM for $75.00 and 4 boxes of thunderbolts for $20.00

All bought during Obama because my handgun ammo was unavailable at Walmart.

I worked in a gun shop for 35 years part time.I told anyone who would listen buy cheap and stack deep.I did and urged others to do the same, some did others did not.I really do not have a lot of sympathy for those who did not. After SH I really emphasized this, history does/will repeat itself. For a lot of people it was not a priority, now it is.

I'll bet that these old boxes of .22 that I have were a bit less than a dollar apiece back in the day.

Ten days ago one LGS near me got in 1000 50ct. boxes of 40 gr. Blazer 22lr. No internet sales and a two box limit with an eye wink if you went right back in the store for another two. The price is $4.95/box.
Today, ten days later, they still have over 450 boxes left on the shelf.

I remember .59 50 rd boxes of Remington Kleanbores at K-Mart in the early 70s. Guess we'll never see that again. But then I was a teenager working on a farm in the afternoons for spending money at $1.65 an hour, so I couldn't exactly buy all I wanted even at that price. Having 3-4 boxes on my shelf was "stockpiled" to me at the time. It's all relative, I guess. It took me a little longer to go through a box of 50 in my 514 Remington single-shot than now in a K-22, Hi-Standard Supermatic, or my 10/22.

I paid $50 for a brick of 500 Federal Match 22LR at the Nov 2015 Tulsa show and felt like I was paying too much. Paid $90 for the same brick about 3 weeks ago and felt like I was getting a bit of a deal.

Found a receipt for a 1375 count bucket of .22 Federal I bought local in 2019.....$59.

About 4 years ago 9mm at the gun show was $89/500.
45 acp was $129/500.

When Gander Mountain had a catalog I used to buy stuff from them all the time. So, I was in their computer.

When they opened the first store locally, I got a free $10.00 coupon in the mail. Over the first few years I got several more. Each time I redeemed it for a $9.99 brick of .22s. After tax was added I got the brick for 7 cents.

Today, yes. 25 years ago, not really. I have some boxes that were under water because of a flood. They still go bang reliably.

Today at the LGS I saw 525rd. boxes of Remington Yellow Jackets for $50.00. Wondering if I should have got one?

Depends upon the circumstances. Did you have $50.? Do you need the bullets? Do you know where you can buy them cheaper? Did you have permission from your wife too buy them? Do you have a .22 caliber firearm? Larry

Don't hate me but when bricks of 500 were cheap ($10 or less at gunshows), I bought a bunch and dumped them into large plastic coffee cans for convenience.
I still have several full cans. :-)

You better. You will be the only guy with a 525rd box of Remington Yellow Jackets seeing as how they never made a 525 box only a 50 and 100rd box of Yellow Jackets. So buy fast!

This is the time to trade extra ammo for guns.
I just read an ad on a local gun forum where a guy is offering to trade a nearly brand new Taurus G2C with 2 magazines for 2000 rounds of 22LR.
I'm sorely tempted. I know, I know, it's a Taurus, but I've had great luck with my Taurus guns, and the G2C is probably their most highly rated pistol, it gets rave reviews - and I have between $90 and $100 invested in 2000 rounds of bulk 22LR.

^ammo is a commodity which can be sold or bartered, thatís why I keep mine in original packaging still sealed.

This shortage has been profitable for me.

Anyone charging more than $19.99 for 500 22lr of ANY kind needs to be shunned.
Price gouging cannot be rewarded.

Why? No one is forcing anyone to buy anything.
FYI the $20 brick has gone by the way of the dodo bird sorry. Going rate on a brick is $90+ and once again you donít have to buy it and nobody is asking/forcing you.

I couldn't ask that kind of price for it.
Now if someone wants to offer me something of value for some, like a gun, I have to admit to being pretty tempted...

FWIW, today I paid $3.99 per box of CCI regular velocity.22lr, which comes to about $40 per brick. Thats about my limit for run-of-the-mill 22 ammo.

I am thinking that my ammo stock pile may soon be worth more than my 2018 Toyota. No plans to sell but when my son gets up from AZ I will give most of it to him. Been passing along a gun or two every year now that I donít shoot much any more.

I can remember paying a buck fifty for CCI Mini Mags.

But then again I can remember when the young ladies used to smile at me and not because I was just a harmless old man.

I have somehow managed to get over both changes without complaining about it.

My LGS had a two box limit. I visit every Tuesday, always asking for primers. My high school friend saw me walk in and shook his head. I asked what DID he have and he showed me two 100 round boxes of CCI subsonic ath $12.95. I cleaned him out.

My brother lives near a rather large sporting goods store. They get shipments in daily, he said all ammo related items are gone by 10:00 am. They open at 8:00. Last week he scored 150 rounds for his AR and picked up for me 200 rounds of .22 LR and a box of hunting ammo for my beloved .308.

It is only rewarded and will only continue as long as someone pays more for it.

People that are paying $30-$50 for a $10 box of 9mm are bringing this on themselves. The 2 boxes and good for life new buyers would have been set by now if everyone else didn't panic with now or never buying. The shelf cleaners would be dumping at cost or below if they were buying what they can't use or have more $$$ tied up than they can afford to spend.

Most of us, those that looked ahead anyway, don't NEED more ammo even if we WANT more ammo.

Sit back for a while, don't feed the panic and it might not get back to where it was, but it will be better than what it is.
