Default Ammo swap question

So I am lucky enough to have ordered a case of 9mm before the pandemic and I had quite a bit saved up from the last panic so I can move 500 rounds and not have an issue.

I’m thinking of swapping 500 rounds of 9mm Federal 115 FMJ for some .45 ACP. I know ammo prices are sky high but I don’t want to get ripped off nor rip off another person

I was thinking trade 500 9mm for 450 230 FMJ

Does that sound fair?
Should I do 500 for 400 instead?

Just curious what you your thoughts are? I would only do this face to face and not deal with shipping.

What is wrong with an even swap? 500 for 500..........

In normal times, .45ACP ball ammo seemed to cost about 2X comparable 9mm. Nothing is easy to find today, but 9mm appears more available than .45’s. Manufacturers have huge contracts to produce 9mm for the military and LE and it’s expensive to stop production to retool. I took a quick look on GB at completed listings. In quantity, 9mm seems to be going for about $0.75/rd. .45 ACP is closer to $1/rd.

Based on the above history, 500 9mm’s should be worth about the same as 375 .45’s. When you’re looking for something specific, trades can be difficult. You’ll need to find someone who has what you want and wants what you have. You’ll probably have an easier time selling the 9mm outright and buying the .45’s.

The terms of this deal may be affected by the fact that more 9mm ammo seems to be getting used these days than 45 ACP, and certainly more guns in the smaller caliber are being sold. This being the case, I don't think too large a multiplier should be applied in the proposed trade since the nines would be more readily salable regardless or "list" price. JMHO, local conditions may vary.

I think ammo swapping is the best idea. My B.I.L. needed 380 ammo, I had some extra 9mm, and traded my 9mm with a cousin for some 380; no money changed hands. So it did not matter if it was $5 a round or $8. Only way to operate in these weird times.

If it's a not a friend get the best deal you can. If it's a friend base the value off of what you guys paid for them/average pre panic pricing.

What he said. If not a friend get best deal possible. See what other party says first.

I did a swap at a gun show 250 9mm 115gr FMJ Remington range ammo for 200 45 ACP 230gr FMJ Sig and 20 230gr Hornady JHP.

Was looking to do 250 for 200, but when I threw it out as a swap start point, the guy didn't bat an eye.

Start 500 for 500 and deal from there. If you end up at 500 for 400 and you are good with that, than that is a fair deal.

Based on what I see, even though .45 ACP is more even in the best of times, 9mm has a higher demand.

And (let the flaming start) 9mm FMJ may be considered marginal for anything other than target shooting, 230gr FMJ is still a capable defense round.

I have mass 5.56 and really shy on 7.62x39.

Traded a guy 420 rounds of Federal 5.56 for 735 rounds of steel case 7.62.

I also value .45s higher than 9mm. With the shortage of available ammo and the number of 9mm users you may well get a 1 for 1 swap. I would also drive a hard bargain unless it is a friend or relative. Your ammo is worth what you can get for it and resupply is on a time line..........

For years I've been buying ammo, any type of ammo at flea markets and yard sales. It's paid off 1000x so far. I've got tons of ammo I don't have weapons for, but I have ended up trading primarily for what I needed. The most abundant ammo I have is 5.56/7.62x54r/7.62x39/.380

Trading has been mostly doing your homework, finding out what ammo you have is selling for per round and what the other guy has and what it's going for then working from that point.

I’d be happy to get 400 rounds of 45 ACP for 500 rounds of 9mm. I’ve only seen 45 ACP available at two boutique ammunition sites for quite awhile.

There's a huge demand for 9mm right now. Its probably the #1 caliber people are searching for. I'd bet there's somebody out there who would be tickled pink to swap you 1 for 1.
