Default .38spl hard to find?

What are you finding? It seems to me that good .38spl ammo is hard to come by, these days..........

For the few places in southern NJ that have ammo, none that I have seen have had any 38 Special. In my travels in the past 9 months, I have only seen a few boxes of 32 S&W and 32 S&W Long.

My sister just bought a Colt Cobra snubbie. She reports ammo is very, very difficult to find in .357 or .38 special. I am giving her some from my stash, because she if family, even if she did buy a Colt.

I reload so have not tried to buy any. In the local shops I have not seen any at all. You can look on Ammo Seek and they have plenty. I guess that would be a option if you just need a few for self defense.. I am hoping people will stop buying the overpriced stuff so that thing will start to get back to normal.

I often go to an indoor range that typically sells ammo.

Last time I went they had some and I bought a box.

That was about 3 weeks ago. Will go again soon and see if they still have some.

Otherwise haven't seen any for months.

I just reloaded 100 rounds for 13 bucks. Unless I had a gun that literally had no ammo for and it was my only self defense gun, I would not buy a mo at 3 times the normal price. I’d never spend another dime in a store that gouged like that

I was just at the newly opened Scheel’s in Colorado Springs. Tons of .223 at 10 bucks a box, lots of shotgun ammo, but the only centerfire handgun ammo was 10mm. They had at least a hundred boxes of it.

My range sells ammo to members at a discount (cheapo 9mm ball is about 20 bucks a box) but they haven’t seen .38 Special in a couple of months. They think all of the production is going into 9mm.

I have plenty, but I’ll be glad when this silliness is over.

Probably because I’m not looking for 38 special ammo, I seem to run across it periodically.

Most recently, I spotted 4 boxes of 158gr round nose lead ammo for $20/box which I bought.

I frequent out of the way, hole in the wall LGSs by preference and have luck finding ammo in those. The big box stores are not happy ammo hunting ground for me over the past months.

I’m not desperate for any ammo: I buy it when I see it at a good price. That’s what I’ve always done.

Once I realized I could use small rifle primers. I started to reload .38. First time reloading pistol ammo, but given the current dry spell well worth it. I used to buy 500 round cans from Georgia Arms for $130, but it looks like those days are gone!

Just about ALL AMMO is unavailable in these parts.
Regular sources at regular prices , I meant to say.
$1+ a round, all over town.
Just the other day I was out at the Kirtland AFB BX.
They had a pretty good offering of Handguns and I took a look at a CZ-75 Compact.
I looked over into a glass case and saw about 6 boxes of Ammo.
Is that the Ammo?
Yes the Clerk Lady replied.
300 Blackout and one of the newer 6.5 Rounds.

The cheapest I've saw .38 Spec. is $60. + tax. I have plenty of 12 ga. buck and .380 so the other week I had a chance to trade a box of buck and a box of .380 for 2 boxes of .38 Spec. that I need so I jumped on that trade like it was something good too eat. Larry

A few weeks ago I stopped by the LGS and picked up the last 20rd box of .38spl HP. Clerk told me that they only received 6 and that I got the last one. A week prior to that I picked up 2 (50rd) boxes for FMJ (can't remember what I paid but it wasn't exorbitant). Seems like the time to visit the LGS around these parts is mid-morning on Sundays. Go figure.

I was able to get six boxes of Sig Sauer 125 gr. FMJ over a two week period at a local Dick's Sporting Goods recently. $27.99 per box.

What's your definition of "handloaded"? Georgia arms manufacturers their "new" ammunition with all new components including new Starline brass. They claim capability to produce 300,000 rounds per day. That means they are using something like AmmoLoad machines. Same as the big guys.

The only difference I see between them and the "big names" is they just buy their components rather than manufacture their own primers, cases, bullets, etc. but I don't think that's inferior in any way if it's done right.

They do also manufacture reloaded ammo in fired brass. But the new stuff is as good as any I've shot.

They are one of the best sources for new .41 Magnum mid-range ammo.... well, in "normal" times....

They are not mainstream manufacturers. You do not drop by your local gun, hardware , or specialty store and pick up a box or two on your way to the range to try out your new handgun. You must mail order and pay shipping. I believe they make good ammo but I say again they are not mainstream. For instance I see they have 1 offering for .38spl a plated target swc that looks like a truncated cone to me for $35.00 per box plus $13.00 shipping and a 2 box limit. I guess that is OK if you want to mail order handloaded ammo................

Bought a bunch of several calibers over 2 years ago before CA phased-out internet sales. Was getting 9mm for around 20c/rd, 38spl for around 25c/rd and 45acp for 30c/rd.
Also bought a 1500 rd brick of .22 LR for $52. Been shooting mostly that lately.

.38 Special has been hard to get for a year now. You aren't going to just stop by your local store on the way to the range and find anything. You have to call every ammo seller in your area and ask if anything is in stock and when ammo shipments come in.

Bingo!
Fortunately I have never had to resort to that, having been lucky enough to purchase ahead of time. I have to admit that it has been nice to realize that I am protected/stocked-up for the next decade or so... It has NOT always been that way in the past... So keep paying attention...

38 Special ammo has always been hard to find where I live, going back decades.
Several people have always had them, but the owners are not recreational shooters. A box or two of ammo is a lifetime supply, so retailers stock a minimum amount, or none at all. ,

For our NRA Basic Pistol class, we required 200 rounds of .38 Special and we furnished S&W revolvers. Now students bring whatever handgun they can find ammunition for. No .38 Special available locally or online if you miss a notification.

Picked up 27 boxes of AGUILA 38SPL 130GR FMJ. Brings back memories, I used to shoot tons and tons of this stuff with my pops through a smith mod 10 pencil bbl.

The only place I know of to get reasonably priced 38 Special ammo is from my Dillon Square Deal B.

With the FBI going back to the mighty 9mm, there is no need for .38 spl or .357 mag. , no need for .40S&W, .45 acp ,or .357 Sig either. The FBI has spoken!
