Default Shipping ammunition to my son in cali.

I asked this question on calguns but, apparently, this is such a convoluted and (deliberately) confusing issue that not even cali residents are sure.

I want to send some ammo to my son in cali. I can't send it directly to him, but have to send it to an FFL for him. He then can pick it up there.

But not all FFLs are on board with this since the law is so precarious, many FFLs choose not to take the chance.

My question is, other than finding an FFL who will receive/transfer the ammo, are there any issues with a father sending his (resident of cali) son ammo?

from what I understand ,you can't get ammunition shipped to you from out of state
it has to go through an ffl,if he has a c and r ffl
you could ship it to him with no problem

Send him a check and let him buy it here. It's a nightmare and I doubt you'll find an FFL to handle it.
I have to have my US passport plus my Ca. drivers license. Since I've bought a gun in the last 5 years I only have to pay $1.00 to have my background check run for each purchase.

If I haven't bought a gun in the last 5 years I'm not in the date base and it'll cost me $19.00 every time I purchase just 1 round or a 1000.

Separate paper form for each caliber with the round count listed countersigned by both myself and the clerk doing the transaction.

Hope that helps.

Little pixies, or fairies, leave it at the foot of their beds at night; along with their full auto rifles.

AFAIK you need to have a federal hazmat shipper's license to send live ammo, powder or primers. It's very involved and expensive, and generally not worth it for an individual. And the USPS has no sense of humor if you fib and tell them it's a box of pistachios.

Powder and primers do require a Hazmat license to ship but not assembled ammo.

I'm sorry I can't help you with your original question, I have no idea what silliness Cali. is doing, it changes often from what I've heard.

As for the gangs getting ammo, the laws are only obeyed by law abiding citizens, not the criminals.

You can ship ammunition and primed brass without a hazmat license. Powders and primers require it.

There is no getting around CA ammo laws, must go to an FFL to be legal.

I like the concept of making that drive!

The parent-child relationship is meaningless in this context. A grown up resident of one state related to a grown up relative in another state are not somehow better connected legally than any other two grown up citizens.

I think there is a limit on the amount of ammo you can legally bring into Cali in your auto.........

I guess I'm too old to cave to all these new laws, and being a native Californiaian, I would just send a couple smaller packages of the ammo, and not declare it. If your'e son is close to the Oregon border, give me a call, and might be able to sort things out. Somebody else sent this message.

It would be easier to move and get a new job than it would be to get California to adhere to the US Constitution.

if you want to do it by the book, you will need to hand the ammo over to an FFL where you live, and have them send it to your son's FFL, who would then do a background check before handing it over to him. to pass the background check he must have bought a gun in california in the last 5 years and not be on the prohibited persons list (felons etc). most FFLs here charge $5-10$ per case and are not keen to share their info with strangers. i'd say best chance to get someone to agree would be to send it through a major gun store that they already deal with (if you can convince the store on your end to help you). all in all, it's going to take a lot of searching and hassle to find anyone who will do it.

as far as driving it across the border, you can legally do that yourself if it's a small amount and you are coming to california on a hunting trip, but he can't cross the state line to pick it up and bring it back. but if you did decided to take a road trip, the biggest contraband they are searching for at checkpoints on the highway is citrus fruit. hint hint.

Smuggle it into Ca. with an illegal from South of the Border ...
Ain't no-body being stopped is what I'm seeing ... they will welcome him with open arms ... feed him , cloth him and buy him a bus ride to your son's house ... What a country we live in !

The idea of selling locally what you were going to send him, then just mail him the check and he can buy it there, sounds like the easiest thing.

Probably be cheaper and better if your son moved out of Cali and you could just hand him a box.

I enjoyed my tour of duty at NWS Seal Beach, Ca. One of the best tours of duty I had in the Corps. But when I received my PCS orders back to the east coast, We did not slow down leaving!

Simple. Box it very securely, box it twice. Ship it USPS. Laws are so convoluted no one knows the legality. USPS doesn't inspect shipments. They don't open the package. They don't x-ray it. They don't have ammo sniffing dogs.

Now this is illegal and you've guilty of violated a gazillion laws. But then again every morning you wake up you've been violating a gazillion city, county, state, and federal laws. So why worry now.

I have told my friends in California that they can use my Nevada address. If a box arrives here with their name, then I will put it in my gun room where it will sit until they come to visit me. What's in the box, Goose? Don't know. Ain't none of my business.

I have been told that investigators from California Department of Justice will come to the Reno Shows to watch people buying large quantities ammunition. The investigators will follow the buyer out to the parking lot to see if the vehicle has California license plates. If it is a California car, the information will be relayed to the California inspection station on Hwy 80 for the vehicle to be stopped and searched. California gun laws; one of the many reasons why I left California.

Just about anywhere else in the US but California, this would be an easy thing to deal with. From what I have heard recently even the cops in California have problems getting privately-owned ammo.

No matter what you do you would probably be in violation of some law or regulation, or even worse, putting your son at risk. Best avoided.

That said, I might get a little creative, maybe put together a package to ship from myself at my home address to myself at my son's address (in care of, with adult signature requirement to demonstrate my cautious nature), and include a note asking my son to please keep this stuff for me next time I come out for hunting season, be sure and lock it up and make sure no little hands can get to it, etc, etc, etc.

Should keep my son completely clear of any culpability. I doubt even Cali would extradict me from another state to prosecute, and any law school drop-out with a speech impediment should be able to defend me if it came to that.

I still don't like the idea of being the test case at the courthouse.

Nope... just having a C&R FFL is not enough. In addition to the C&R FFL, a valid California COE (Certificate of Eligibility) is also need in order for ammo to be shipped directly to a C&R FFL holder.

I have both of them, and for the time being, I have the ability to purchase ammo online and out of state, and have it shipped to my door step.

Many folks here when the new ammo law was passed, obtained a C&R FFL and COE, to get the legal exemption from ammo law. It's not difficult to do, but a pain to do.

Yup, daughter and son-in-law are Fed Leo's. Same convoluted laws apply. You need to have a gun registered with the state so you can even buy ammo. Gun and ammo doesn't have to match so my son-in-law went and bought a really cheap gun (Heritage?) so he could buy ammo.

You might notice this reads " . . . any vehicle . . ."

Don't forget: the Citzens of california amended their Constitution, only to have it declared un-Constitutional by a Federal Court when the gov & atty general violated their sworn Constitutional oath to protect & defend it in that action!

I guess they only swear to defend those portions of their Constitution that conforms to their erection-to-resurrection radical leftwing, liberal socialist agendas?

What's next: free speech or freedom of religion?

P.S. Check out what it costs to rent a moving truck FROM california vs. TO california: getting out ain't as easy as you might think!

Just box it well and send it USPS. Stop jumping through the BS hoops. Do people really think the post office is x-raying all these packages looking for ammo? It's ridiculous. Goes well with the boogeyman theory of having a slide plate with some dumb saying on your gun allowing some imaginary lawyer to lock you up after an otherwise legal shooting...

Donít even think about it.

It was your sonís choice to live where he does.
Itís his responsibility to work out the associated problems.

That might work once, twice, maybe three times. Maybe not.
I would not put anything past the Postal Inspectors and other alphabet agencies out there.
My money says they ARE X-raying and using dogs to inspect lots of packages for prohibited items.
The ď bogeymen ď are real and they are out there in increasing numbers, and they have more access to your personal information than you do.

Kindaí like the joke where the guy requesting an application to apply for a job at Google, and being told that filling out an application and resume wasnít necessary because they already had all his information.

33 years with the USPS . Nobody is XRaying or opening parcels. Nobody cares or gives a **** whatís inside a package thatís already moving through the system as long as it doesnít leak fluids or give off fumes .
Donít ask, donít tell . Double boxing and lots of tape are your friends .
Just donít go wild and try to ship 1k rounds at a time .

USPS has lost its collective mind, if it ever had one. I mail flat rate envelops to CPA and business dealings. Every time I do they ask the dumbest question about contents,” anything hazardous, flammable or potentially dangerous? I still ask,” how can a few sheets of paper be dangereous? Ray Charles could see this, Give Me A Break…..

We strongly advocate adherence to ALL firearms laws at ALL levels- Federal, State, and Local.

I don't recommend any of you posting anything on the net that is advocating illegal activity.

That said, we're done here.
