Ammo Trolling in Cabelas
An odd one today, at least for me.
I haven't been in my local Cabelas for a long time. Been buying ammo online. Went in today to pic up a box of 22s for about 9 cents each a shirt on sale and a Plano box for a few guns that need a case.
While I was looking at the ammo shelf and deciding not to buy some Al case .40, a guy asks me if I'd like to buy some of his, for the same price as Cabelas, brass not Al, and no sales tax. (he had it in his car in the parking lot.) He was just sort of hanging around "shopping." I said no, I had enough 40 and I wouldn't take the chance on it being his home made stuff and I won't shoot anyone else's reloads in any gun of mine.
He then waited till another guy was studying the 40 and asked the same question. Also said he had 9mm. And I think he approached a third guy.
I wonder how often he hangs out at the Cabelas ammo shelf?
I thought, very briefly, about saying something to a Cabelas clerk, but decided it was none of my business.
This ever happen to anyone else? (Just for the record, my Cabelas is north of Seattle in Marysville, WA.)

Like you, I haven't been in my Cabelas for a long time. I still have enough ammo. I wouldn't trust buying ammo from him either.

Here's hoping it's one of the profiteers stuck with inventory. I would have told the store manager about it. I don't like being solicited.

Soliciting on the property of a business, especially a retail store, without permission is usually illegal. I certainly would not buy ammo from some stranger in a parking lot. It might be a case of someone who bought multiple cases of ammo before the pandemic and is now looking to make a profit. It might a case of someone selling reloaded ammo. It might also be a case of someone selling stolen ammo.

And without gov registration of all ammo and individual serialization of bullets, we'll never know...

A few warning signs, Redcoat3340. I'd be wary too. I would think their loss prevention folks in the back room would quickly see him loitering and take care of the issue. That Cabelas hasn't had much gun stuff to sell for quite some time. It seems to be an opening for at least one ammo scalper to move in.

Psst…I know this is a Dunkin Donuts, but do you want some of my Krispy Kremes?
Same price, they’re in my car…
Yeah….I’ll pass.

Back when we had a Gander Mountain store near here I was in looking to buy a Mossberg M-151. A man came in looking to sell his Winchester lever gun to the store. It just happened to be in .45cal. Store clerk asked what he wanted for it. He had the original receipt and it was sold in his name. Store clerk took the gun to a back room and I told the man if they wouldn't give him what he wanted I would buy at his asking price, but we'd have to go outside to firm up the deal.
Having worked in a gun store I knew they would only give him about a third of the retail price. We went outside and I put a very nice, nearly new, Model 1894 AE lever gun in my car and handed him a check for his asking price. I don't know why he wanted to sell the gun and didn't ask. I did however, through one of my friends in LE, have the numbers run to ensure it wasn't hot. Squeaky clean.
We both left the parking lot happy.
Here it is, shown with my Ruger Blackhawk Bisley model and a Schrader, Old Timer, belt knife.

I am a LEO and would have, at the very least, contacted the manager. I might have even gone as far as to contact the local authorities. I don't mind someone hustling to make a buck BUT, isn't that what GunBroker is for?
Smell test isn't very good on this one.

Just the other day Was over at my local Cabelas.
They didn’t have much ammo.
BMG 50 anyone? They had plenty of that.
And nobody whispered, hey Cowboy, you want 380? I got a deal for you!
Last week I did meet a seller outside of Cabelas and bought 2 Boxes of 380.
The Seller arrived in a Brand New Tesla.
That’s what I’m talking about!

FWIW, I was at my local Cabelas this morning and there was a push cart full of WWB 9mm ball at 19.99 per 50 rd box. No limit and no one even picked up a box while I was there.
I think some ammo-capitalists are about to learn a hard lesson.

The last time I saw 9mm at Cabelas they had about 30 boxes behind the counter.
Since I am a Club Member, yes, I drank the Koolaid, I was allowed to buy 6 boxes.
It was Herters Ball by Winchester , mine missed the recall, $17 a box.

You forgot, it could also be a ploy to get you and your money outside where he can lay hands on it, with absolutely NO ammo in his car.

I bought a Rolex that way. Great deal! $10000 watch for only $35! Next time you see him, ask him if he has any watches in his car.

I bought a Rolex from a guy on the platform of the NY subway E train going uptown from Penn Station. It was clear it wasn't quite what he said it was, but the band was worth the $25 he was asking. I bit and it ran quite well for a bunch of years (cheap quartz works, that's probably why the Timex I've had for 5 years now still runs and that was only $27 on Amazon.)
('Course there was the time I was interviewing for a job as communications director sometime in the last century for a major insurance company. The big shot doing the interview says, "Hey you got a Rolex too!" "Which one, let me see it and I can tell from the registration number on the back what model it is." At which time I asked about salary and benefits or the weather or whether he liked lemon Jello -- anything to change the subject. I didn't take the job.)

Was at cabelas a few years ago (probably about 6 yrs). Couple of guys were looking for reloading supplies. They had polo shirts on “team Paraguay”. It was during one of the shortages of everything reloading. No primers,no powder, no bullets. anyway after a bit I walked up and ask them what the deal was. They were from Paraguay and planning to shoot at fort Stockton international silhouette competition. They were shooting 357 maximum.looking for IMR 4227, SR primers and 180 gr bullets. None to be had. I told them I shot silhouette back in the 80’s and may could help them. Told them to follow me to my house. I supplied them with 2 lbs of 4227, 600. 180 gr bullets and 1000 small rifle primers. They insisted on paying so I took regular retail prices for the supplies. I ended up with a nice “team Paraguay” polo shirt and they left happy.

I just bought two boxes of WWB 9mm for $8.99 each. The store limits a customer to two boxes of each caliber. Blazer Brass was the same price. I think the supply is starting to increase.

The thing about a gun battle my friend is this: It isn't always gonna end up the way you expect it too.
No matter how good you are, there are those out there better, or more desperate, OR, just plain LUCK.

Was out running errands, swung by Cabelas.
Didn’t see any $9.99 9mm.
In fact, didn’t see any 9mm and not much else.
But they still got 50!

You are absolutely right: It is NOT your business.
Don't be a Karen.
It's not like hes trying to sell you a tv in a cardboard box out of a white cargo van.
I'm sure if he said he had some nice buckets of .22 ammo from a reputable mfr, youd been all over it.
If someone wants to buy his stuff, fine. Cabelas isnt paying you to worry about it.
Either buy his stuff or forget it and move on.

The store was Bi-Mart, a North West chain of stores. The one I went to is in Klamath Falls, Or. They had a small selection of various pistol calibers, some shotgun, and some 7.62 x 39 and .223.

Yes it's coming back. A local Rural King had a big sign "NO LIMITS" and several tables full of shotgun shells, 22LR, 9mm, 223, 308, 7.62x39, and some others. A month ago it was "2 boxes per customer limit" on the sign. Prices were still slightly inflated, but those should go down with time. The small dealers in my area are all still trying to get two or three times the pre panic pricing.

We'll see how the Russian ammo ban will affect price and availability.
Yeah, one guy I know was selling out of his car. Blazer Brass 9mm $1 a round. This is the same guy who sells commercial grade fireworks too.
I was asked about the price by a co-worker. I said sure, in November 2020, maybe, if you were desperate and had a pistol and no ammo.
.
WWB 9mm 115FMJ .40/rd in my area right now.
We'll see
