Default CCI Quiet-22 Semi Auto

The only .22 LR ammo available over the counter at my favorite LGS is CCI Quiet-22 Semi-Auto--its a 45 gr. LRN at 835 fps.

I bought a box of 50 ($5.95) and tried it at the range yesterday:
it won't reliably cycle out of a Beretta 21a
it won't reliably cycle out of a 5" Kart conversion
it WILL reliably cycle out of a Ruger Mk. II 7" bbl.

I ran out of ammo to seriously test accuracy out of the Ruger but I'm not sure I will buy any more of it--I have a case of CCI Mini Mags that I picked up from the same LGS at the same price point, and a couple of cases of SV ammo that I had stashed a while ago so I have enough .22 ammo to last a few years.

If I had very little .22 ammo I would probably buy a few bricks of the Quiet 22 Semi Auto just to have handy but I don't see it as a go-to type of ammo.

I'll let the LGS know what my findings are--I don't think any of them tested it, nor do I think any customers have reported results since no one at the shop seemed to know if it would actually work, lol.

It IS quieter than regular .22, but not airgun-level quiet. I would not shoot any of it around my house (which is strictly verboten!). Another LGS has a good supply of Colibris .

Anyone else try this stuff? Any reports on accuracy?

I have some. Its okay inside of 20 yards from my bolt gun. I use it in my back yard to dispatch squirrels on the feeders. It has its place but its not much quieter than SV in my CZ. I never could get it to work in any of my semi's.

I ended up with a box of 500 CCI Quiet Target 40 gr LRN that was accidentally mixed in to a larger order of CCI SV. I used it suppressed in a CZ 457 bolt action .22 LR target rifle. While utterly silent, and moving at a claimed 710 fps, the drop at 80 to 100 yards was profound enough that shots weren't even landing on the paper when I started to dial it in. In fact, I'm kinda surprised they had the power to punch thru the paper once they got there. That being said, with a Sparrow Silencer, they were almost as quiet as dry firing the rifle.

It wasn’t as accurate in my Pre A Model 52 as CCI Standard Velocity. Never tried it in an auto.

My CCI Quite is also listed at 710 fps.

When I first short barreled my 10/22 I grab a box thinking it was CCI subsonic and headed off to the range.

Needless to say my 10/22 was a single shot that trip.

I have been shooting a lot of CCI Quiet out of 10/22 with the Volquartsen Firefly Bolt. With a suppressor on it, all you hear is the cycling.

I recently found some of the Semi Auto version but i havent shot any. I am going to test it in a Keltec P17, 22 Charger and mp15-22 pistol.

Been shooting quites for years, when needed. Quites ARE less noise than my pump up 22 cal Benjamin air rifle. Years ago a buddy and I told some friends how quiet they are, they doubted so invited them to my place. Lived in hoa neighborhood but had “ issues” with tree rats in bird feeders. Anyway 3 guys came over , I pumped up the benjamin, shot 2 into tree so they could hear. At time had Ruger 10-22 and single shot 2 quiets into same tree. The doubters were amazed to say the least. Now have long barrel savage bolt 22 which makes quiets even quieter. Have never tried them in Mk II but will. Quiets are ok accuracy wise in Mdl 17. They make several different quiets now, used the first ones in test.

I have my bolt action CZ 452 with a 22.5 inch barrel zeroed at 50 yards with CCI standard velocity. At the same distance I got 1.5 to 2.2 inch groups centered about 6 inches low with CCI quiet ammo. About twice the group size as the CCI standard velocity. Even with that long barrel its not quite air gun quiet but it is don't need hearing protection quiet.

It shoots OK out of my S&W 617 but not as well as regular ammo. And out of a short barrel it is a lot louder than it is out of a rifle.

It isn't really meant to be a general purpose round or make your unsuppressed gun so quiet your neighbors in a subdivision with .5 acre lots will not know you are shooting it.

But it would work well for plinking at short ranges in areas where shooting is legal but you don't want to needlessly disturb your neighbors, scare your dog into hiding under the toilet or wear hearing protection. Or for introducing young children to firearms with as little noise and recoil as possible. Its much much more accurate than CB caps and has less drop too.

It might also work well for dispatching pests without a lot of noise but all I have ever shot with it is paper.

It wouldn't reliably cycle the action on any of my semiautos.

So it has its place if you have an appropriate place to shoot it and something that isn't a semiauto to shoot it with. But if you don't there are a lot of better options for general use.

Edited to add: The quiet ammo I used was all 40 grain, I didn't know there was a 45 grain version designed to have a chance at working in semiautos.

Don't mix quiet with sv in a match. Ask me how I found out. Good for practicing stoppages though.

That type ammo is best in a single shot, bolt, pump or lever gun.

Thats what my wife uses in her 317, makes it easy for her to shoot 5 yds. I did try one in my CZ bolt rifle, had to rod the bullet out of the barrel.

CCI CB Longs with a 29 grain bullet at around 690 to 700 fps. works great on birds out to 35 yards or so, and to about 20 yards on squirrels but you have to do good head shots or forward ribcage hits.
Quieter than compressed-air pellet guns when fired out of a rifle.
With any of these ultra-low velocity .22 loads, don’t shoot them out of rifles with really long barrels over 24” long. The longer ones actually slow them down to the point that you lose about 40% of your effective range.
I think the CCI CB Shorts shoot just a little faster with the same 29 grain bullet because they may have the same powder charge as the Longs but in a case with less volume. This should increase pressures some, and consequently, velocity.
These are my observations from shooting approximately 20,000 + of them since the late 70’s at all kinds of inanimate objects and small animals under all kinds of conditions. They are some of my favorite and most useful loads, and will. Ever be without a good supply of them
If for some reason I could only have two boxes of .22 LR ammo to last me for the rest of my life, one would be some sort of full-powered load, and the other would be a box of CCI CB Longs.

I never shot the Quiet Semi-Auto CCI ammo but have shot the standard Quiet ammo. I'm not surprised it won't cycle a semi-auto because its very low pressure. I'm surprised they are making a semi-auto claim because of the low pressure. They are very quiet in a bolt action rifle for sure.

The lead RN LRifle ammo in my 22 pump did around 710fps.

It was quiet but not really accurate with a 1/2" or more flyer now and then
at 20 yards, that made for bad hits on vermin and squirls, requiring a follow up
shot if you could get it, or let the animal run off to die.

The copper HP brother is even worse in the killing departmet......
plus the bullet would come apart in sections and damage stuff at differeent angles from the normal down range course.

The copper HP will not penetrate a dry 2x6 at 20 feet.

I tried filing the lead round nose for a flat surface, to see if it would dipatch
ground squirrels any better, but they still would jump up and run off a ways.
Only a head shot would put them down, where they were at.

I now use the "Quiet" ammo for target work and select the long or loud
sub-sonic for my pest control ammo at 15-20 yards.

+1 on it not working in my marlin auto rifle, on ejecting. (needed 970fps )

Note;
My quiet ammo at 710 fps was a 40 gr bullet.

The new "Semi-Auto" is a 45 gr stated at 835fps.

It might work in a semi rifle ??

Have not seen the semi auto version, no surprises with the current situation. Heard about the reduced recoil spring for 10-22 but thats it as have the bolt savage. Old Winchester , Remington’s and CCI’s are all I shoot unless Quiets for pests.

The purpose and place for the CCI Quiet is from either a Bolt Action or Lever Action Rifle IMHO at at Range within 50 feet. For that purpose it works very well. I have never tried to get it to cycle in semi autos as I knew it would just not cycle the action - that's not what its meant for. I do not use it in handguns.

I tried CCI Quiet when I was experimenting with different ammo through a suppressor.

As noted above, it will not reliably cycle most semi-automatics. It is very quiet suppressed through a bolt action, but not enough so compared to standard velocity ammo that it's worth the ballistic penalty.

Where Quiet is useful (and IMHO, what it's designed for) is short range shooting where less report is desired, but suppressors aren't an option. It gives more ballistic performance than a gallery (CB) load, but is quieter than an SV load unsuppressed.

I use it in revolvers and bolt/lever rifles. Good stuff.

CCI quiet rules, but id treat it as bolt or single shot (and revolvers I guess) only. If you can find it, try CCI Suppressor. Still subsonic, but it cycled the 10/22 I tried it in and cycles my Victory when I have the can on. It definitely will not cycle your 21A unfortunately.

I love that stuff out of my 10" 22 LR Match Contender. Super accurate and not very loud. Of course, everything is accurate out of the Contender, except for Super Colibris. It even shoots CCI 22 short CB's well.
