Default Another Ammo at Walmart Report

Was at one of our local Walmarts (we have four in the area) for some items and did the usual sporting goods walk through. Couldn't believe my eyes at the gun counter - like a miracle. The ammo case was nearly full. Lots of .22LR (Winchester SuperX, Federal Bulk, CCI Standard Vel and Stingers, and some new high priced Winchester 22lr I had never seen). Shotgun shells in various guages and hunting rounds for rifles mostly Winchester brand. Deer season begins soon here in SW Va.

Hard to resist but didn't buy any as I have enough .22, don't own a shotgun and don't hunt but a good sign that perhaps Winchester is making more that the demand.

Later stopped by the Sportsmans Warehouse and shelves were bare except some high priced .223.

I was in the Chattanooga Sortsmans Warehouse last Saturday and they had a huge selection of most popular calibers. Prices were higher than pre-pandemic but not nearly what I’d been seeing.
I didn’t pay a lot of attention because I reload but did notice Winchester range ammo was $19 a box.

They had several powders but no primers. I’m seeing a good variety of powders now at regular retail prices but still no primers other than mail order.

Gun prices were anywhere from a good discount to a high of retail. I didn’t notice any inflated prices on guns. I bought a very hard to find new Colt Cobra at retail as a birthday gift to myself.

Since I had an excuse, birthday coming, I went up to Smoky Mountain Guns and Ammo and bought a new S&W M&P 15-22 rifle. With the red dot they were getting $409 which was a pretty good discount. SMGA had a good selection of firearms again at good discount prices. They also had tons of ammo that was flying off the shelves. I didn’t check prices but a good 80% of customers were there to get ammo.

Buds Guns is a block from SMGA but had had enough for the weekend and didn’t stop in.

Seems like things are moving the right direction.

I’m an old guy and been through this shortage and inflated price deal several times. Prices probably won’t come all the way down to pre-pandemic prices due to increased labor and transportation costs and inflation in general.

An old guys advice, when prices get down to a more reasonable level, buy, buy, buy everything you can afford. Stockpile! This isn’t anything new and it’ll happen again.

I have enough primers, powder and billets plus loaded ammo to last quite a few years but I’m still buying when the price is right and I’m planning on buying more when prices drop.

Walmarts around here have gotten rid of all their guns I didn’t think that would happen, but I guess the liability is just too great. Ammo cases are nearly empty but academy and cabelas have lots of ammo except for .380.

Walmart has been my go to for 22. They have the best price and will have loads of it usually around the first of the month. I got a range bucket for only 60 a couple weeks ago. Heck cheaper than dirt is “selling” those for a kings ransom. Also if you have an academy near by periodically check their website. They usually have a real time track of what they have and I was able to run by and grab 400 spp. Granted they were 6.99 a box but it beats not being able to load or buying from scalpers.

Driving to Ft Payne, Alabama on Monday to visit my brother and thought I would stop along the way and check things out. If I recall correctly the last time I drove that route there was a Cabelas and a Bass Pro-Shop in Bristol. One on Va. side and other on Tenn side along I-81. Passing by Knoxville and Chattanooga also.

Thanks for the information!

I used to be in The tri cities every week but rarely get there now. If you’re coming down I-81 Buds and SMGA are off I40-75 at the Sevierville exit. They’re about 4 or 5 miles down on the right. Buds is off the road and almost behind SMGA. SMGA is in the basement of that huge knife store.

Sportsman’s Warehouse is off I 75 at the Chattanooga airport exit behind the burger king. It’s the 1st exit off the ramp headed to the airport.

I have a business partner from Fort Payne. Also used to do catalog work for Heil, garbage trucks, there. Nice little town.

Also passed on bulk 22 at Walmart.
It was Federal and I have a bunch.
Recently have bought Bulk CCI 22.
CCI seems to be moving into interesting packaging, like Plastic Bottles?
Did buy a 500 round box Win 9mm at Cabelas.
No Joy on 380.
Cabela's had Blazer Aluminum Case 45 ACP.
$1 a ROUND!
So is ammo going back up?
Tell me it ain’t so!

I picked up 3 boxes of Federal Automatch 325 rounds at Walmart yesterday for about $21 apiece. Could have bought more, probably should have but I've got a decent stockpile of 22 and thought I'd leave some for the other shooters. No limits on purchases too.

GT Distributors in JAX has 380 defense ammo, $24 / 20, lots of assorted 9mm, 40, 223/5.56, and quite a lot of LEO / Service member restricted ammo, 308, 338 Mag and 5.56 along with 9 mm.
Academy Sports has less selection but lots of 223/5.56 and 9 mm.

Rural King had stacks of 9mm for $19.00/box. Had other stuff, too. Their 22 ammo is very high but they got it.

Academy had quite a bit of ammo last week and the week before.Between those 2 weeks I picked up a thousand rounds of 380. It cost me a little less that 50 cents a round. It was store brand, brass cases, made in Serbia. I don't have a problem with that as I like PPU and they were so marked on the case head. They also had it in steel cases but that stuff was made in Russia.

I haven't seen a single round of .22 at any of the local Walmarts near me since early 2020.

I avoid Walmart like the plague, but LGS's here in MA/RI all seem to be well stocked with ammo. I see .22LR from $5.99 a box (Norma) to $12.99 (Stingers). Down from the pandemic high is .38 Special which can be had for $39.99/50 (Blazer). Hard to find are .32ACP and .380 but they do turn up occasionally.

I haven't checked my local Walmart for ammo for over a year . I can find all the ammo I need at other places . It's not worth the trouble of dealing with WM .

You're lucky! Our local WM in this area isn't selling ammo of any kind any more. Dick's (which I hate with a passion) has moved all their ammo and hunting supplies to their Field and Stream store where the closest one is 31 miles away. That's two more sources that have dried up in the last year.

Bristol VA Cabela's is closed and consolidated
with Bristol TN Bass Pro. Ammo available in
most places but expensive.

50rds 45ACP is around $60.

Went to the local WM on Friday and got some WW 5's and a box of Remington 4's. They also had some WW 6's in the retro box.

I would get some of the Federal AutoMatch. Best ammo for a model 18. Chambers and shoots great.

I check the ammo aisle if I am in that area of WM just to see if the shelves are getting anything. Everything I use WM quit stocking. The local Cabela' and Gun Shops are getting some stock for months all they had was 40 S&W and trap shotgun shells.

I picked up two boxes of Magtech 44 special, I normally don't shoot Magtech or 44 special but it will make a loud noise and a hole in the target, in addition I won't be using my 44 magnum ammo.

The $40 WW Super-X is a limited Retro package. On the high side for 300 rounds, but I bought one to hang on to since I like the box. The $21 Federal Auto Match 325 is plenty reasonable in this market. My Walmart had plenty of both, two boxes of .270 and some white box 223, but is still out of everything else.

Our local wally world has been getting ammo in fairly regularly. Since they went to a 3 box limit there is more of it staying around for people to have a chance at buying. I work there part time in the evenings and some of the local shooters come in often to see if anything comes in that they want. The limits on how many they can buy have at least stopped the flippers from grabbing it all up before anyone else can get anything. Though I hear rumors that a couple stores in nearby towns are ignoring it and selling all their ammo to a local gun shop, one at least always seem to have the same ammo that just hit our store on the shelf if I stop in there.............. Strange, but it's apparently up to the store to enforce the limits.

As a couple posters mentioned the $40 Super X 300 count 22 ammo is a special 100 year commemorative box. There is a nearly identical count in a plain white box Winchester box for $21 that we have gotten fairly often. Guess which one sells out first? LOL. There have also been special packaged 12ga. and 30-06 loads come in, also priced a good bit higher than the standard packaging. Seems kind of odd to be producing these special anniversary boxes in the middle of an ammo shortage but I guess Winchester wanted to get their share of the inflated pricing and wally world isn't going to cut their margins if they can help it.

Otherwise pricing is still cheaper there than most other places but quantities still aren't back up to normal stocking levels. Too bad the PC crowd at corporate scuttled the handgun and AR ammo to make themselves feel good. They could have made a ton more money with the contracting power they have if they hadn't made that move. I never get through a shift without someone asking for either handgun or AR ammo. Some people either never got the word or they believe the continual internet rumor mill that wally world is selling it again...... Wish they would but think it's unlikely with the PC bunch in charge.

I've said it before (although I was wrong last Autumn), wait until Spring when the fishing gear takes top shelf in the sporting goods department. It won't be 2019 prices but way better than now. Patience; Example below.

Target Sports
ORDER PLACED: February 19, 2020
TOTAL$131.78
SHIP TO: xxxxxxx xxxxxxxx
ORDER #xxxxxxxxInvoice
Shipped via UPS Ground
Case 10 boxes 50 ea.
Prvi Partizan 38 Special Ammo 158 Grain Semi-Wadcutter Hollow Point
$129.90
Joe

PS, I like how the "order history" asks: "Buy again?" Sure same order, same price; send the truck. If'n they had it it would be $500+ today. Joe

I was in Walmart this morning and they had a good bit of Winchester 22 LR and WMR. Unfortunately they set a limit of one box of each type.

Stopped by the Cabelas/Bass Pro in Bristol Tenn. on way to Alabama yesterday. Had lots of 9mm, 38, 40, 223, shotgun shells, no 380 or 45. Gun guy said they were unloading truck as we spoke and more ammo on it. Didn’t have time to wait. Bought some .38 (American Eagle 158 gr lrn) for $31 a box for a friend. Bought 100 round box of Herters 9mm for $33. Clerk said the Herters was house brand made in USA by Federal. High prices but they had it

I have 3 Wal-Mart stores near me and the only ammo they have, some shotgun shells. They are not even hunting shot shells and only in 20ga and 12ga, nothing in 410 which I can use.

I was at Cabela's in Hamburg, PA last week and the only ammo they had was some overpriced .223/5.56mm and 7.62X39mm ammo. They also had some 9mm FMJ ammo but that was very expensive too. Needless to say I left with only 2 boxes of Winchester 62gr green tip ammo just to test my new AR pistol with. (total of 40 rounds) That was the only ammo that was not too bad at $13.99/box. (did I really say not too bad?)

After about a 2-3 month drought, several of our local Wal-Mart stores have had ammo. .22 shells, hunting rifle and shotshell, and some of those 100 pack shotshell packs. I have a theory, I think once the nearest distribution center gets a shipment, the local stores all get some in dribs and drabs till its gone, then its another drought until the center gets another shipment. Just a theory.

I mostly buy the 100 packs for sporting clays. Can't load it cheaper, and if I'm shooting an autoloader I often end up losing the empties anyway, so I don't want to shoot good stuff.

VaTom,

Yes, Bass Pro in Bristol does have ammo, but
kinda expensive, Nothing at the Wal-Mart's
here, except shotgun shells. Got really spoiled
when they had rifle and pistol before 2020.

When Walmart was closing out center fire pistol ammo I lucked into some marked down. Last .45 ACP I bought was a 100 round box for less than $20. Also bought several boxes of .38 special at close out prices. Haven’t seen .380 or .45 on the shelf in a long time!!

Walmart here has a few boxes of 410 shells but no 20 or 12 gauge. No metallic cartridge ammo at all.

Still see bulk 22 at the Wall.
Bought some 380 at the Warehouse.
60 cents a round!

Cabby’s in Gainesville had Winchester 333-packs of .22 HP’s for $22.95. Limit was five boxes but I could only afford two on my C/C . They’ve had 9mm ‘practice ammo’ for several weeks at $19.95. Picked up a Wrangler while I was there … I needed another .22

I was in Wallyworld the other day to pick up some paint. As I was passing the ammo counter I saw they had Federal bricks at pre-Covid pricing. The sign said limit 2.

The attendant was speaking Spanish to another guy at the counter, and also to another worker. The guy bought 5 bricks and he sold it to him.

I was next in line. I asked him how many he had. He said 15. I said I saw the other guy buy over the limit so I'll take 15. m He gave me a dirty look but proceeded to take them all out and put them on the counter. I needed a cart to get them to my car.

I really didn't need them, but you can never have too many.

WM is now my preferred supplier.

I heard of some people complaining that new production CCI mini mags were having failure to fire issues?
My stash mini mags is from mid to late 2018.
My WM only has the Winchester X 300rd boxes for $40.18

Remember the long gone days of Perfecta ammo at WM.

Went to a nearby community just West of Atlanta Saturday. While there I stopped by wallyworld to pick up a cheap coffee maker. Well , no coffee maker. The Sporting Goods section was in sight so I walked back and asked if there was any chance that he’d have a brick of .22LR? He politely said no, but I do have these for $21. Federal.22 AutoMatch 325 ct. It’s the first time I’ve found.22’s at any local Walmart in a long time.

$22 and change otd was no bargain, but low enough for me to bring one home. It wasn’t that long ago this same ammo was $12/box. I was quite surprised to find any .22LR this soon after Christmas.

A side note, I’ve seen the same stuff elsewhere for as much as $49.

I was having tires replaced on our Wagon Queen Family Truckster at WM yesterday. Walked through the sporting goods and saw WW, Federal Automatch, CCI Mini Mags and Std. Unfortunately no Stingers. I have a good supply of the Automatch and Mini Mags.

Hopeful sign at any rate. My local Academy has started to have ammo come in and actually sit on the shelf a bit. I’ll have a look at the Walmart at some point. I visited a Cabela’s recently and their ammo shelf area was reduced from over seven aisles to one. Still it’s trickling in. When the Academy starts to have reloading supplies like primers, I’ll say that normalcy is returning.

The Walmart in Pahrump, NV, just replaced its gun and knife display cases with fancy new ones. They have plenty of long guns, most of which are brands I am unfamiliar with. Conversely, they have little ammo; a few boxes of 28 ga shotgun shells. What they get doesn’t last long. Over the hill in Vegas, the Bass Pro, Sportsman’s Warehouse have a good supply, but still a little pricey. If anyone needs .224 Valkyrie, both places have an abundant supply that I believe has been sitting stagnant throughout the pandemic.
