Default .410 shells

I need a couple of boxes of 3" #6 shot . 410 shells. Ammoseek only turns up a bunch of weirdo specialty stuff or 2.5" rounds. Any leads?
Thanks,
Ken

Don't feel short changed by 2-1/2 in. .410 shells. Yes, the longer shell carries more shot, but in a longer shot column, further wrecking the .410's notoriously bad pattern with more shot upset. 2-1/2 in. shells shoot just as hard, i.e. the shot leaves the muzzle at the same velocity, but with less deformation and consequent better patterning.

Jimmy Cirillo and I would hunt pheasants in NYC on Statan Island in Great Kills Park near the garbage dump on rainy mornings to avoid dog walkers calling the cops(:
I had a Springfield Stevens.410 side by side while Jimmy preferred a Winchester.410 pump. The 2 1/2: shell with #7 1/2 dropped most of the birds.I liked the Remingtons for the bird hunting but the Winchester AA were my choice with #9 for skeet matches and reloaded nicely.
Shot a lot of quail with the same gun in NY and Georgia.
I never liked the 3" .410 bore shells

Have .410 shells become that difficult to find? I saw some on the shelves at one of the local Academy stores just last week. I can't say much about what loads and length they were, just that some were there.

If you find some .410 with 7 1/2 lead pellets ...........

Grab them, they will work on small birds at 30-35 yards with a full choke.

If going for "Ringnecks" you need to get a 20 Ga. with a better pattern.

My brother just commented to me the other day about how he had been shopping for .410 Shotshells and couldn't find them anywhere.

Unfortunately, it seems like ammo companies are devoting more resources to manufacturing more popular cartridges to meet demand right now.

The only 3"410 shells I have are buckshot.

If you can't fine the 3" shells you are looking for, like said above, don't hesitate to use a 2 1/2" shell.

I haven't seen much in the way of 410 shells either on the store shelves; much of anything to be exact.

Given the high cost of factory 410 shells, even in good times; I reload the gauge. While that's not an option for many, a pound of powder and a sack of shot go a long way and you get lots of shooting for a minimal expenditure of components.

It's a good hobby that may be a very viable option in the coming years for 410 and 28 gauge shooters.

It always amazed me how far away I could kill rabbits with my .410. It was my favorite gun for stalking them in the snow. Not many rabbits around here anymore, except for in town.

Sorry. I digress.

The occasional rabbit or squirrel was what I had in mind. I have an old Stevens single shot . 410 that was my grandfather's gun, still in very good shape. I have less than a dozen shells and have searched all the local stores in vain. I have loaded rifle and pistol ammo for over 40 years but never loaded shotshells. If I could come up with a cheap simple setup to load . 410s I might consider it. But a couple of boxes of shells would go a long way for my purposes...

I have plenty of .410 shells, but they are all the self defense type of loads for a Judge. That’s about all I see on store shelves, and not many of these

I guard my "hoard" of 410's. The cost of replacing them prohibit pling and target practice. Nothing like wandering the woods with a single shot 410.

This was my granddad’s favorite pheasant load. He used an old Stevens bolt action .410 and killed hundreds and hundreds of them. He never liked the longer shell, always used the 2 1/2 inch. Now I know why!

Good info here. Thanks to all. Agree on the woods-walking with a single shot . 410. Just seems relaxed and right.

Its too bad Lee's shotshell press only comes in 12ga, 16ga and 20ga or it would be just the thing to buy. I too have been looking for a low cost 410 press without success.

I have a side by side in 410 which I just love carrying for squirrel and rabbit hunts.

You might be able to find .410 parts for your Mec 600 Jr to switch from 12 or 20 Ga. set ups.....
or get parts from Mec or a used unit on the internet but that will cost a lot more if you don't already have a Mec loader.

$350 plus for a loader +/-.........

Youtube, Jan 12,2015 has a good thread on setting up for 410 .........
if you dob't have the manual.

Parts adjustment is needed for a correct movement of parts, so the unit
and the hulls are not damaged and put together, correctlyfor a nice finished product.

Is Lee still making the old shotshell Lee Loaders? They used to be available in all sizes and gauges. Slow, but they worked. That's how I started, I still have a 12 gauge set somewhere.

That's a good question, and I'm gonna do some looking. Maybe ebay? A Lee loader would serve my needs for . 410.

I saw some for sale online while looking for what I wanted, but I don't recall who had it.

And BTW, I found a Lee Loader for . 410 on ebay - buy it now was $199. 😳

At all the outdoor sales up to last month, 410 shells were selling for $40 2.5” & 3” shot in 25 count boxes. I’ve got several boxes of shot and couple 5packs of slugs.

Check out Lanes Reloading in Michigan, a simple internet search will find them. They make a .410 reloading kit similar to the old Lee Loaders.

Thumbs up

Ken I probably have the exact same 410 as you.
Those shells hairtrigger has would work just fine for your purposes IMHO.

410 has always been problematic.
I say stock up when you can.

At one of my 3 local Walmart Stores yesterday I took a look as to what they had in the "once upon a time packed" ammo cabinet.
The only shotgun shells in there were Winchester 12 guage and 20 guage.
Also present were zbout a dozen 300 rd boxes of Winchester X.22LR @ $41/box.
The cabinet was 95% empty.

Old Western Scrounger that is part of Navy Arms now has a bunch of 20-22-28" single shot shotguns from Turkey under $100...

As for loading shells...

Ive been in two Walmarts lately, both had those $41 a box Winchester's in stock. Apparently not flying off the shelf at that price.

Reading this thread, and seeing many squirrels in the woods this weekend has given me an idea.
I've got an old .410 Lee loader and a two boxes of wads stashed away. Both 2-1/2 and 3 inch wads. I've also got a plastic pop bottle full of #4 shot. I've loaded .410 in the past and they work! I'm going to load some 2-1/2 inch .410 shells with 4 shot and go squirrels hunting. All I need are some cases. I'm going to advertise for some at my club. Hope I find some. I don't need many.
A couple places I go to restrict you to shotguns. This should be just the ticket for them limb chickens.

Yeah, I looked at a couple of Lee-type loading setups, but I don't have any empty hulls, wads, or shotgun primers. I do have some shot. But none of that helps me in the short run.
P. S. The hand loading setup sold by X-Ring shooters looks like a quality tool.

I reload 12 Ga, shotgun ammo but did not want get into the little .410
since the guys that do load them, told me how it was a PITA..........
and at the time ammo was all over the place, so I bought two cases.

The 410 & 28 Ga are two fun shotguns to shoot but they are hard on the wallet.

I understand using .410 and 28 ga. when the game requires the ga. but if the ga. is not required I just load light loads in the 12 ga. I can pick up for free all the 12 ga. hulls I want but I have to buy .410 and 28 ga. and they won't reload as many times as 12 ga. so that makes them more expensive too shoot.
I really like the 28 for skeet and the best day I ever had was with a .28. I missed shot 101 and ended with 199 out of 200. Larry

I was in my local Walmart this week and the only shotshells on the shelf were some Federal 28 ga. A buddy gifted me a handful of vintage Peters paper hull . 410s this week, complete with the early box. They are 3" #7.5 shot. I'll post a picture of the vintage box later. Pretty cool to have.

I just went on ammoseek.com and there were Winchester 3" #6s listed as available. Good luck.
