Default 5.56 match question?

A friend of mine is selling some matchgrade ammo (see pics). I don’t shoot that often and when I do, it’s usually PMC, American Eagle or whatever is on sale. This might be nice to grab a box or two depending on price.

Does anyone have a good estimate of what this goes for? I checked online but it’s either an old posting or out of stock.

Thanks!

The last time they had it, Selway was selling the Black Hills ammo in your pic for $80/50rds.

Another vendor I know if is currently selling the Federal gold medal match version of that ammo (same bullet) for $1.35/rd

I've only used Winchester and Federal Match ammo. It will shoot as well or almost as well as carefully developed handloads using good (Sierra) match bullets. Match ammo is always expensive, but it's a lot more accurate than the cheap bulk stuff.

Just a friendly reminder you will need a 1:8 twist barrel or faster to stabilize the 77gr. That is top of the line Match ammo you have pictured loaded for X-course competition. This load would normally be used at the 200 and 300 yard stages switching to the 80gr. bullet for 600 though many folks shoot the 77gr. all the way through.

Unless you are planning on some serious match shooting at the NRA expert or master level, you don't need to spend that kind of money on mid to long range match ammo. Unless you get an exceptionally good deal on it, I'd save my money and get what you've been shooting.

On the other hand, even if you are not a match shooter, you might find it interesting to compare group sizes between the match ammo and bulk ammo. Shoot your groups at 300 yards to get the true story.

It's been quite awhile since I was shooting long range and the memory is fuzzy, but the moly coating on the bullets is another factor (besides rifling twist). IIRC, your barrel has to be properly conditioned to get the best results with that type of ammo. Best let it go

I have not used that particular ammo but I have used other Black Hills ammo and it has always been of very high quality. If you can get it for a good price snatch it up. The new ammo with a 77gr bullet is running $1.90 each.

Black Hills started out making high quality remanufactured ammo and years later added new ammo too. The price will depends on if it's new or remanufactured. I'm not sure if they are still selling remanufactured ammo so you will have to check.

WR brings up a good point on the moly coated bullets. Back in the 90s, moly coated bullets were all the rage and several competitors in my acquaintance were head over heels over them. I never thought that the claimed advantages of the coating ever compensated for the expense of them or the trouble of coating standard bullets with moly and then coating them with carnuba wax to seal the moly on.

In the end, the fad went away. It was apparently the devil to get the barrels stripped of molly once the barrels had been used with these bullets.

For anyone interested, here is a link on how to moly coat bullets at the Berger Bullets site:

Thanks for all the comments. If the price is right, I may get it and hold onto it for a while.

While very, very accurate ammo the Mk262 is THE combat round for the mk12SPR platform. In fact the upper was built around that round of ammunition if Im not mistaken.

No matter, buy it, buy all of it you can, then sell me some. As someone said above at least a 1 in 8" twist barrel is needed, a 1 in 7" is better. Thats a long (for caluber) 77gr SMK smoking along at about 2750fps.
