.45 Colt source
I'm looking for .Colt ammo for my new (to me) 25-7. My general inclination is a lead SWC of decent weight (250-265 grains, let's say) at modest velocity. I do have some BH cowboy ammo on order (delivery TBD), and I see HSM has a couple of modest loads with RN flat points (but I remember their ammo as being really dirty when my agency used it).
I am not looking for top of the line hunting ammo or defensive stuff. Any ideas for makes/sources? All I have found locally was specialized stuff at stout prices.

Check out ammoseek.com. There look to be a number of online vendors who have it, if you are willing to pay the price, which, for the most part is over $1 a round.

I got 200 rounds of Underwood 200 grain wad cutters last month from Midway USA. $45.00 per 50 with free shipping. Just shot a dozen rounds so far, but my Hawes Western Marshall seems to like it…just a bit high at 25 yards. Not the cleanest, but not real bad either.

Midway USA has some Underwood 45 Colt ammo in stock.
The suggestion above to check ammoseek is a very good source too.

Call Bitterroot Ammo 406-777-2822.
Ask it they have any. If they don't find out when they will be running some. I bought 2 boxes of 500 from them a couple years back. I will never run out of brass for my favorite round. They have a small state of the art ammo plant.
I have gone in and found pallets of ammo in their show room when other places were out. They are just 10 miles from my one of my brothers

When I first got in to shooting the .45 Colt I made one of the wisest ammo investments I have ever made -- I worked up two loads, a "standard" 255 gr. Keith SWC load and a "Ruger Only" featuring the 250 gr. XTP. Between the two I had everything I wanted for my revolvers and rifles, so I loaded several thousand of each while components were plentiful and comparatively cheap.
Been living like a millionaire on the dividends ever since... never have to search for .45 Colt ammo, and laugh every time I remember what it cost me to load. What's left will be more than enough for me to shoot my usual quota to my last day, with a few binges thrown in along the way.

Bitterroot were great to deal with. Also been doing some bidding on GB. Will be keeping brass for my potential start to reloading. Even loading supplies are unobtanium and priced at OMG levels. Right now, it seems that $0.80 per round is a low end price. Lots of other stuff is ... stratospheric.

When I go visit my brother I always stop in there. My brother did some work for the guy when they installed their bullet machines. I have never failed to see pallets of ammo along the on wall of their show room. They also have a great taxidermy display as the owner and hid family spend a share of the profits hunting big game. They are good people.

Stay away from the dealers at gun shows. Most of them buy from box stores and then jack up the prices to absurd levels to make huge profits off the suckers. See it all the time here at the gun shows.

45acp has dropped to $35 per box 50 for decent 230 ball/ brass case, but 45Colt is $75, if you can find it.

I think I’ve owned 2 boxes of factory 45 Colt in my life. Old Remington Klean Bore. Shot it up in m25 and have loaded it ever since. I knew guys playing Cowboy who didn’t load. They were buying Win Cowboy 45, I ended up getting a bunch of 1x brass from them and I got several 45 bullet molds. Mostly do WCs or original style RNFP 250gr bullets. Shot at original velocity.

I only own three .45 Colt guns. One is a S&W Model 25, another is a Colt Model 1909 U.S. Army and the third is a Pedersoli Colt Lightning. All are fun to shoot.

I only have one 45 Colt, it's an original Ruger Bisley Vaquero. I have been looking for a nice S&W M25 at a fair price but not yet. I think I'm going to buy a levergun in 45 Colt too. (I really like leverguns and have many lol) I also reload the 45 Colt because I have rarely seen box of ammo for less than $50/50 rounds. Prices are so sick and getting worse instead of better where I live.

Next time I take a trip east I am likely to visit Bitterroot on the way back. As for buying at gun shows, not just no but hell no. For lots of reasons.
Between Bitterroot and winning a few auctions at GB, I should be ok. I will eventually start moving toward reloading.

Choice Ammunition out of Victor, MT….not cheap but then what is these days. 180, 200 and 250 gr. At about $1.20 a round. I use them for my .38sp wadcutters, but have not tried the 45 colt for my model 25s.
