38 Sp vintage ammo questions
Hello all:
I'm working my way through my stepfather's collection - will be selling off most of the ammo.
I found some interesting boxes I thought the brain trust might have some input on:
- Total of 479 rounds of "Super Vel" 110 grain in jacketed hollow point. These rounds are mostly NOS (two open boxes) in mostly very good condition, some oxidation of lead tips and one box has some discoloration of the brass. I can't find much info on this brand - curious if anyone is familiar.
- small quantity of Western "Super Match" (only 20 rounds) - noted on box as "clean cutting". Unusual appearance.
I also have a bag of miscellaneous rounds in varying condition, some PMC Bronze FMJ in 132 grain, just a few rounds of very interesting looking S&W branded jacketed hollow point - brass looks to be nickel plated (?)
I'm attaching some photos - any thoughts appreciated. Total rounds is around 630 including 70 or so in the mixed bag.

The Super Vel name has been resurrected and there is good information at their website (supervelammunition), although it’s probably better to google Lee Jurras for good articles about the old ammo. I have a half box of original Super Vel 380 ammo and keep it as a collectible. I expect there would be a lot of interest in the old product and I wish I had more than a half a box.

That 'old' SV definitely has value over and above current 38 Spl jacketed ammo!

SV was the first manufacturer to go into the high speed lightweight bullet market. Pretty soon, the big guys were forced to follow suit with similar offerings. It is fairly easy to find, but today it would sell for more than new ammunition as there is some collector interest. A partial box of the wadcutter won’t draw much attention.

In the second picture there's a partially shown box of Norma 357 Mag, very hot stuff. The ballistics of all the old Norma ammo was hot.

I remember buying the Super Vels 110 gr JHP’s back in the late 1970s at our local range in Connecticut. Memories…thanks for making me feel old, only joking, God bless.

Super Vel 110gr? Have a box or 2 of .38 and one of .357 110gr. Don't know anything about value. I DO know these rounds fit and fire in my revolvers. With the present lukewarm .38+P ammo, the SV comes in handy in steel frame guns. YMMV
