I just bought a s&w 22 pistol and shot it for the first time today. I got Federal champion (high velosity)22 lr 40 grain. Out of 235 rounds I fired, 31 misfired is this an unusually high number? I've read in here that 22's can be finicky but this much? I'm going to try some remingtons after work monday. Anyone else had these kind of numbers?

That sounds like a pretty high number of misfires to me, but I have seen some pretty bad bulk .22LR ammo. What I have found is that, in general, you get what you pay for with .22 ammo.

Using Remington 36 gr. high velocity 22lr hp with a used Taurus 94 yesterday, less than 10 out of 100 misfired. I think its the ammo, not the gun. Wanted a Smith but did not have the $$ right now.

Hummm. The Federals are usually pretty reliable
as far as firing. The only issue I see with them
is sometimes a round might seem a tad weak
compared to normal.
I was shooting a brick of the 550 box Federals,
"36 grain hollowpoints", and also the Federal
Champion 40 grain ball not long ago, and I
didn't have a single misfire in 600-700 rounds
or so.
Might look at the pin strike on the rounds that
wouldn't fire and see how they look vs the ones
that did.
To me, it sounds more like a pistol issue, vs
the ammo, being as you had so many misfire.
To me, 31 out of 235 is a pretty high number,
and I haven't had any misfire problems from the
Federal I've been using lately. Not a one in my
10/22. So makes me wonder about your pistol,
firing pin, etc.
If it does it with other brands, I'd take a
look at it. See how it does with some mini-mags.
If they misfire, I'd say something is not right.
I consider those pretty reliable.
Course, I guess you could have got some funky
ammo, but I've had pretty decent luck with the
Federal, so makes me wonder.

Two weeks ago, I took my 422 and 17-3 to the range along with about 20 different brands and styles of ammo. The Federal bulk 550 pack that everyone seems to think so highly of, misfired regularly in both guns. I had several other Federal loads along, and they all worked fine. So did several types of Remington and Winchester. This isn't the first time I've heard of someone having trouble with the 550 bulk pack Federals either. It must be something in the way they manufacture them in mass.
By the way, the Federal Gold Metal Target loads, were one holers for 20 shots! They were extremely accurate in my 17-3 as were Winchester Power Points, and Super Sillhouette, but the one that always impresses me the most are Remington Yellow Jackets. They are consistantly the most accurate rounds in all of my .22's, both rifle and handgun.

That seems like a very high number of misfires. I have had similar results. When I turn the cartridge and fire them again they usually go off. Did you also get quite a few that seemed underpowered? I have found that besides the FTF issue there are underpowered loads as well. I now buy the Blazer or CCI loads and found them to be consistant shot to shot with almost no FTF. If your gun likes plain lead bullets Blazer is the way to go. In 1000 rounds I had one or two FTF and no soft loads. Federal and Winchester loads seem to have quality control issues. Bruce

With that many failures in a new gun, there could be other variables too, like light primer hits. I'd clean it up good, and try it again with a few other brands of ammo. If they ALL misfire at this rate, the gun becomes suspect, and starts begging for a round trip to S&W customer service.

Wipe the area under the extracter throughly. Anything under there that keeps the extracter from seating fully can cushion the firing pin impact by letting the case move forward slightly when hit.

alright, tried remington 550 golden bullets12 out of 30 mf, cci mini mag 20 out of 30 mf, remington yellow jacket 16 out of 30 mf, winchester hp 15 out of 30 mf. I looked at the pin imprint some look lighter than others most do not. I called s&w and had to leave cs a message.

Funny you mention this. I just took my S&W 22s (that I bought used two weeks ago) back because I had about a 40% misfire rate. Gun shop thinks that there might be too much space between the chamber and the slide. There are sending it back to S&W.

Is this a revolver or semi auto.
I have noticed a decline in the quality of bulk ammo. More FTF's and poofs. I guess it is quantity not quality right now?

Seems like a lot of misfires with a lot of diff brands I would suspect the pistol. A very good cleaning if no improvement send back to S&W with a very detailed letter. I had a dad lot of remington bulk a while back 1 out 10 avg. FTF in my 41 I switched to A ruger MK 2 and no luck 10-22 no luck Picked up some federal bulk and all was good in all guns. Seems to be an epademic as of late with poor quality. Suspect factory is pushing to produce as much as they can. I am scared to buy a lot of bulk at onr time now in fear of getting a bad lot.
Sorry I couldn't be anymore help. And you did say pistol in you first thread Read it twice and still missed it.lol

I find all these reports about failures to fire at odds with my own experience. I have two .22 rimfires, an old Remington turnbolt and a recently new Ruger Single Six. ALL .22 rimfire ammo, Long Rifle and Mag, have fired consistantly, cheap ammo as well as match grade. Brands used were Federal, Remington, Winchester, CCI.
Only problem I have had with ammo is lots of leading with ALL Remington .22 Long Rifle ammo in the Ruger. As best I can tell, bullets in Remington .22 Long Rifle ammo are too small for bore of this Ruger, resulting in lots of leading. Federal, Winchester and CCI do not lead at all in that Ruger. The old Remington digests anything and does not get leaded bore.

If I witnessed my Sino-Austrian shooting pard get 66% misfires with CCI Mini-Mags I would yell at him, "Ho Li Schidtt"!!!!!!!!!
Wow.

I have only had what I consider real problems with 1 box of the remington 550 bulk so far. I asked about some other brands on this and other forums with really mixed results. Thats why I use a lack factory quality assurance as an excuse. I have heard time and time again you get what you pay for so I am willing too overlook the occasional poof or FTF.

Well I talked to s&w, he agreed It's a problem. They are sending me post paid paper work to send it off with a detailed note of the problem, and they will take care of the issue promptly. Very nice, I'll keep you all posted...

If you are getting a good dent in the rim which shows a strong firing pin hit then the problem is likely the ammo. If the hit looks a little weak then clean the pistol as any powder residue or anything that stops full contact of the rim and the chamber can soften the firing pit strike enough to prevent positive ignition. New pistols should always be cleaned prior to shooting as the manufacturers put an anti rust coating on them.
To see if its the ammo's fault, take a pair of pliers and grip the bullet of a misfired round, twist off the bullet, dump the powder and look down the case. Usually on a bad round you will find that the priming compound isn't distributed completely around the rim and your firing pin hit an area it was missing. Sometimes you will find there is no priming compound or find it floating in the powder. No primer hit, ammo won't go off.
There is a reason you pay $15 for a box of 500 rounds of bulk ammo and $60 a box for match grade. Some of the best .22 ammo is CCI standard or high velocity that runs around $6 a box of 100. Try some of that and see if it doesn't all go off.
