Is it as simple as packing it up and going to UPS and requesting ground shipping? Do I have to ship some special way?I assume I need to tell them Im shipping ammo.

Either write on the box, or better yet print a label, that says "ORM-D, small arms ammunition" and place it on the outside. Then take it to UPS and ship it. Technically the boxes have to have a crush weight of 200 pounds, but I've never seen them check.

Oh yes, AND the nice folks at UPS will charge you a Hazardous Materials surcharge. Usually around $20.00, whether it is one cartridge or a case. If you don't declare the contents with the ORM-D label and you get caught, it is apparently a nasty little offense with punishment. They have us over a barrel. UPS is the only one who will ship. Trust me, I tried FedEx all the way upline. They say "no". It is illegal to send ammo by USPS. This is a way the anti-gun folks may come after us one day..... God Bless, Marc

Marc:
All Fedex stores aren't like yours. Within the last 2 weeks, I shipped ammo thru both UPS and Fedex. Fedex because it was cheaper and UPS because Fedex didn't deliver to a particular rural address. Neither charged a hazmat fee. I shipped about 6 pounds of ammo (5 boxes) to FL thru Fedex for less than $10, ground. Declared it and labeled it and everything. Same price for 1 box (less than 2 lbs.) to outside of Houston, 80 miles from me. Declared it was ammo and labeled properly. I will use Fedex if available.

There's no Hazmat fee on small arms ammo shipped ground via UPS (don't know about FedEx). Never been charged it either to ship or when ordering. Check with UPS - no hazmat applies. If you were charged Hazmat, this was incorrect.
I have received ammunition via Fed Ex ground without a problem as well and nary a Hazmat sticker on it, and it was labeled ORM-D, but I'm less familiar with their policies.

Hazmat is for powder and primers by themselves. Small arms ammunition is not considered a hazardous material for shipping ground. Does not require special marking that I have ever heard of and I receive the stuff regularly via UPS.

No hazmat fee should be charged for loaded ammunition shipped United Parcel Service.
Just be careful to certify the address to which you are shipping loaded ammo.
I put up a Classified sale right here on this forum, and the buyer told me to ship to his work address because that's where his UPS driver always dropped off his packages even when addressed to his home.
I shipped a thousand 5.56mm rounds to the address he provided to make it easier for him.
His work address was a freakin public high school and after my package was signed for in the office he didn't take it home for two more days.
