I keep getting asked about this rumor. Obama supposedly proposing a law to make ammo expiration dates. I can't find anything "Official". Anyone have anything? Thanks.

It's noise. Some while back some idiot bureaucrat looked at the idea but they quickly figured out that it could not be done reliably. If you make ammo or components to go "bad" in say five years a certain amount of them will go "bad" in only five months. The gun haters love the idea to prevent citizen stockpiling, but it's not technically doable, (so far).

That rumor is the reason I had a half-dozen ammo cans with nothing but primers in them when the current panic hit. Most of them have "1993" or "1994" dates on the box. I guess I can thank Clinton for making a hoarder of me way back then.

Actually this is much more likely than people think.
The motivation will be the environment. Current long life primers contain the element "Lead" and other heavy metals. The "Greens" see this as a bad thing. (note the California Lead ammo ban).
Lead free primers have a shelf life estimated to be approximatly 10 years. Certainly longer than the five years quoted, but enough to stop people from stockpiling

Do you believe that there is an element in our government that wants to disarm us?

There is always a chance that our rights may be taken away. Do I sit around and develop an ulcer worrying about it..No! I have many guns and plenty of ammo to last a while. What kills me is when a rumor goes around that sounds ridiculous and people actually believe it. Especially the ones that go over and over again. Stop listening to Wal-Mart employees and "know it alls". There will always be an "element" out there trying to take away everything from fast food to ammunition. Think about the "fat tax" that politicians have tried to institute. How about a tax on soft drinks have you heard that one?

While this thread is the first I heard anything about perishable components, and I didn't believe it, stranger things have happened. If the environmentalist wackos can so badly skew american oil produstion, refining and auto fuel standards, lead free primers would be at least as easy to foist on the american public.

Smokester,
Personally, I don't worry myself to the point of ulcer. But I am cautiously alert to things I hear these days, especially from the current administration we have in control. Nothing would surprise me that could be attempted, although the question posed by this thread to me was somewhat over the top. I do have people that respect my opinion as well the information I give them on issues about firearms and the 2nd Amendment. If anything, I owe it to them to give correct information so they may act on it accordingly as they choose.
If you choose to ignore things you hear, it's certainly your right. But please, don't not ridicule those of us who seek clarification on issues that have to deal with our freedoms. I just wanted to find out if there was possibility that this could occur. To sit and wait and see if it's true or not could result in "too late to do anything about it".
I do thank you for your opinion however.

Sorry, I did not mean to ridicule anyone on this thread. I also watch things closely as well (how do you think I know about fat taxes). It just seems that when things are far fetched people still run with it. And I also feel that people will throw things out just to see what happens. Remember preparation is the key with everything.

I can not help those who refuse to see, but as of two days ago, there was an "Army Times" article detailing the effort to produce a "Lead free" ammunition.
Why?
Because it is environmentally sound. The current article refers to 5.56mm, M-855A1 ammo to be used in M-16 type rifles.
Consider, this is not some fringe group internet publication, this is the U.S. Army's site.
Alarmist, perhaps, but REAL.
BTW, the ammo being developed does not use a "Lead free" primer.
Why?
Reliability and shelf life issues.
