Your thinking of .38 Special, I'm looking for .38 S&W for an 1886 S&W TOP BREAK REVOLVER.

I would recommend you roll your own for a top break. Brass is obtainable, StarLine makes it, I think Remington still does too. Use .358 grain bullets, get those with a slightly hollow base so they will flare out slightly. The gun was probably designed for .361 diameter bullets. For that matter even a hollow-base 148 grain wadcutter should work well.

Why don't you try the Ten-X offering? It is advertised as safe for use in "first generation guns". http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct...tNumber=792535

I'm just curious what you'd pay for 38 S&W ammunition down there. Up here in Saskatchewan, only one of two shops in my city has it in stock, and its $46.99/50 a box....yes, that's no type-o. I've heard it can be had for around $30-$35 elsewhere in Canada.

Remington 146gr LRN .38 S&W ammo will cost me $32 a box locally. I don't buy factory ammo for the .38 S&W because of the price, I reload for it. I load a .360" 160gr bullet designed for that caliber and it shoots great! I even loaded up some 38/200 WWII British rounds a while back. That was fun to shoot.

Cheaper Than Dirt has some Remington .38 S&W in stock at less than $30 a box. It's the better Remington Express ammo, not UMC ammo. Sportsman's Guide has some Magtech available for $19.97 a box. That's a better price...

I found another vendor with .38 S&W ammo using a 160gr Lead bullet. Old Western Scrounger is a good company to deal with and they make or stock some fairly hard to find ammo too. (like 32 Win Special, 32-20, 38-55, 38-200, 45-110 and stuff like that)

I use the magtech in my cowboy snubbie, it is fine, easy shooting and very soft even from that little 5 shot break top. I believe I got it from Cheaper Than Dirt, but someone here warned about their credit card security??

Also, be very careful with Cheaper Than Dirt when it comes to price gouging. They are notorious for gouging and taking advantage of shortages. They don't seem to care about long time customers.
