According to a post on www.gunsholstersandgear.com Federal will be reintroducing some of its line of Nyclad handgun ammo:

Federal Nyclad Ammunition in .38 Special to be Reintroduced at 2009 SHOT Show
October 29th, 2008

Federal Premium Ammunition will be re-introducing the Nyclad in .38 Special at the 2009 SHOT Show according to the folks at the Pro Arms Podcast. During a show on “snub nosed” revolvers, one of the participants made the announcement.

The Nyclad line of ammunition was developed several decades ago and became popular as one of Federal’s self defense lines of cartridges. The .38 Special self defense load was a 125 grain, standard pressure round that featured a soft-lead bullet with a very deep hollow point. The bullet was coated in a jacket of polymer, similar to nylon, that allowed the bullet to reliably expand all even low velocities.

Many experts feel the 125 grain Nyclad hollow point was the best standard pressure cartridge loaded for the .38 Special. It offered excellent expansion with a relatively light recoil in even the lightest of revolver frames. My own informal testing seemed good out of a model 642 Smith and Wesson (1 7/8? barrel), and Evan Marshall’s research tended to show good results in the street.

Until Federal confirms or denies this information, it is merely a juicy rumor at this point. I have seen a lot of people snap up the remaining old-stock ofNyclad whenever it has shown up at AmmoMan and other places. I suspect it will sell very well if re-introduced.

Well I hope it is true but I'll wait until it hits the shelf to cheer. Also, what price will the "new" ammo be on the shelf.

Sweet, that old Nyclad was some good stuff. Would love to see a .44 version of the "FBI Load"

I always liked the 38 Special Nyclad ammo. I still have some tucked away. I'm glad to hear that Federal is bringing it back.

A 44 Special Nyclad SWCHP would be excellent!

It is good to be able to
hope that an American corp. might offer a good product at a hopefully reasonable price.

That was my duty ammo when the switch was made to wonder-9's. Only problem was occassional runs and laddering in the nylon.

Great news. I had an older 442 which I used to carry a lot and it was not rated for +P loads so I carried the Nyclad hollowpoints. I still have a couple of boxes of the stuff and it's good to hear that it'll be available again.

It would be nice to have those available again.
I still have some of the non +P 125's,
but hesitate using ammo so old for defense.
Federal owes us something, after ripping us off
with their "low recoil" marketing lie.

Was this the ammo that was found to penetrate some types of body armor?? If so, let's keep it out of the hands of the BGs.

No. Nyclad are soft lead bullets with a plastic coating to keep lead out of the air and the pistol's bore.

You're thinking of harder bullets, with a Teflon jacket, and those were never sold to non LEO purchasers. That was a media hype lie.

I sure hope Federal resumes the Nyclad line. I still have a box of 9mm that I bought 12 years ago. Used in my Sig P228 and Kahr Elite 98 K9.

+1 on bringing back Nyclad, but please don't stop with the 125 gr. I'm almost out of 158 gr +P HPs. Could use some of the same in .357.

You know whats really odd? The have 5 loads for the standard velocity - two being aimed at personal protection, and only one +P load.

I hope that velocity listed is from a 2" barrel and not a 4".

Yes, it is--in fact, it's a vented 2" barrel, to simulate firing the round from a snub revolver like the Chiefs Special. (I couldn't find the test barrel info on their website, so I went back to a Federal catalog from 2001 and found the specs there. The new ammo appears to be exactly the same as the 2001 version.)

I just got 50 rounds of Federal 38 special +P HP Nyclads from a guy. I think they are 125 grain but I don't know anything else about them. They are loose and not boxed. Any info??

A 125 at 830 out of a 2''? That is disappointing. A 158 at 830 would be more like it.

Federal made the both the standard pressure and +P pressure rounds in both 125gr and 158gr so you will have to try and figure it out.

Wesprt, you have to remember, those are standard pressure .38 Special rounds, not .38 Special +P rounds. IMO if they are achieving 830 fps from a 2" barrel fron a standard pressure round they are doing quite well indeed.

One thing to remember is that Federal® will now sell this old load (#P38M)in 20rd boxes costing far more than it did in the 50rd boxes. Bottom line is you will pay twice as much for half as much ammo.

I would be in for a case or more of the 158 grain loading.
