Your local Walmart should have some sort of FMJ ammunition in stock. They'll probably have it about as cheap as you'll find it anywhere. Try Winchester White Box, Blazer Brass, or Remington-UMC (green and white box) ammo - different Walmarts have different things.

Try to buy your FMJ ammo in the same bullet weight as your carry ammo, it makes practice a bit simpler. You can also just use .45 230 gr FMJ as carry ammo in a pinch.

Not to hijack, but what is the definitive word on using JHP in 1911s? I use FMJ at the range, but have heard and read that JHP (which would be my preferred carry ammo) has more FTF/FTE problems in 1911s. True?

I'm not trying to be a wise guy, but if you want to save money, learn to reload.

It really depends on the particular gun, the vintage there of, and sometimes even the type of mags that you use.

If you have an old gun, and it is box stock, it was probably set up to work best only with FMJ. If you have a relatively modern gun, test your desired carry load of course, but it should run with JHPs.

Note that some of the problems with feeding were due to the designs of older JHPs like the Speer 200gr JHP which was known as the "flying ashtray" due to its wide mouth. This gave it a bullet profile prone to causing problems in the 1911s of the era.
