Default Ammo for 649 357 Revolver...

Can you provide what good ammo (bulk) if possible for 649 357 Revolver? I would like to buy some .357 Mag and some .38+P ammo. I am having hard time finding brand and item number of a good ammo for this gun. Thanks. Brody

My J frame model 38 Airweight Bodyguard is fed Hornady 125gr XTP/JHP NON +P ammo.

I personally think +P ammo in a "get off me gun" like the mighty Smith & Wesson J frame is over rated.

I had a 649 only briefly. My intent had been to fire it mainly with .38 special ammo. If you're looking for acceptable "bulk" ammo, try the UMC 125 gr +P .38s or UMC 125 gr .357 mag JHPs as sold by Walmart in 100rd packs.

Good advice. Remington 125 gr. SJHPs (whether UMC or Express) are second to none out of long and short barreled .357 guns. Keep in mind that you will pay a heavy price in Muzzle blast and recoil. You will get full size gun power out of a snubby with those two loads. Make sure it's not more than you can handle. The UMC 125 gr. .38+P are good economy ammo and use the same excellent bullet as their .357 big brothers. Corbon 110 gr. JHP, DPX, Speer 135 gr. SB and the FBI load (.38 +P 158 gr. LSWCHP, Remington or Buffalo Bore) are top flight choices in .38 special. I don't advise std. pressure ammo in .38 spl for those able to handle the recoil of +P.

I agree Remington bulk pack ammo is good for the price. I like the "rosebud" bullet they use because it expands reliably. It can be used for both practice and carry if need be.

I recently bought some PRVI Partizan 38 Specials from Wideners (but unfortunately they are out of stock now). They were $13.90/box and I was pleasantly surprised by this Serbian ammo. It is a target load being 158 gr LRN, but theoretically, you practice with the cheap stuff and load up the high dollar SD rounds only when you carry, IMHO.

They also have (HAD!) Blazer aluminum .357 Magnums for $15.40 a box. Can't find 'em much cheaper than that but of course these are not reloadable.
