Thumbs down Ripped off by Winchester.. or Wal Mart..

So today I picked up some ammo at Wal Mart. One of the boxes was 100 rounds of Winchester .38 spcl 130 gr FMJs.

Normally I open the boxes and check them out. WHY OH WHY did I forget to today?!?!

The first time I DON'T open the box and check it out, I get ripped off. When I got home, I opened the box to see one round missing, and the round next to it upside down. Now Wal Mart (at least around here) keeps the boxes behind the counter, so I can say most likely it wasn't some customer.

I'm rather upset about this. I paid 27.97 for the box... so I want 28 cents back from someone!

Moral of the story... always check your boxes before you buy.

That sux. Sorry to hear that. I doubt you'll be getting your 27.97 cents...

I must admit, I never check the ammo boxes I buy . Then again I've never had that issue.
I will be checking from now on; it's wise to learn from others' experience.

Thanks for sharing.

I was looking for a reason to boycott wal-mart, I've found it.

I always check the ammo, now. A couple years ago I bought a few boxes of 20 ga slugs for some pre season practice. First couple boxes went fine, then I could not hit a thing. My son said: Dad, your kicking up dust all around the target. Sure enough. the boxes had shot shells in them not slugs. The boxes were all the same lot number so I feel pretty sure the mistake did not happen at Winchester. I expect someone bought 25 slugs for what a box of #6 shot field loads cost.

Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose!

I always try and save my 50rd boxes of 9mm with the trays so that when I buy bulk, I can put them away in nice neat rows. The last time I bought a 100rd WWB 9mm bulk pack at Wal-Mart, I had one extra!

Now I wonder if someone else just got 99!

A friend who works in a local gun-shop tells me that it is common for someone to shoplift one round out of boxes of ammo, it happens to them all the time. Can't imagine what might be up with that! I recently bought an expensive box of Norma 9.3x74R ammo, and one round was missing, so the shop discounted the box $5. Always a good idea to check, especially expensive ammo!

A lot of the shops around here won't let you open a box of ammo, they say it's the law but I doubt it.

Must be a trend, a local guy was caught stealing a few rounds from each box taking them out of the middle.

I was in Gander Mountain in Hattiesburg MS the other day. Signs everywhere saying not to open ammo boxes. I did it anyway; just makes sense to me. If checking a box of ammo before I leave the store is a problem, then I'm in the wrong store!

I used to buy the Winchester White box 9MM all the time and yes--- it always had 101 rounds in the box. I suspect the box was filled by weight so the 101 st round would make the weight, Just a thought.

I will be checking boxes for correct count.

6-25-09' 12:00 Hrs.
Same Wally World 30 miles N/Seattle.
Same as last time zero handgun stuff, a few .22 val-packs, still lots of 12 gauge field loads. Spotty centerfire rifle hunting loads (no .223, 7.62, or 7.62X39).

The gun shop is now charging $15.00 per 50 for FMJ 9X19, all brands 115 grain (Amer. Eagle, Mag Tech, Blazer brass, etc.) Sales appear to be falling off a bit at the counter. Plenty of EBR's and tupperware. Huge number of 1911' clones in all price ranges $500-$2,500.

(EDIT) Sorry all! I put this in the wrong Wal-Mart ammo thread. I had intended to get it into the thread already running on Wal-Mart ammo availability. Too many "Wal-Mart" titled ammo threads I guess?

I was in Gander Mountain recently only to find the ammo section had been ransacked LOL. I mean you really had to check the ammo out really good cause much of the stuff had been tampered with.

Keep your eyes open and be careful when you pick that box of ammo up it might just break open next thing you know 500 mags are dropping on the hard floor at your feet.

Take the time to write Winchester and tell them. I did it years ago with a box of 50 .41 magnum empty brass that was 0ne pcs. short they sent me a check for a box of loaded .41 magnum ammo. Also a buddy bought ten boxes of once fired .45 acp Remington brass from a shop that used to get Colt's test fired brass it was thin in the neck as after resizing the bullets would fall in . He wrote them a letter and the had him send it back then they sent him a check for ten boxes of loaded ammo. So as they say the squeaky wheel get's the oil !!!

You can bet they;d keep the .03 cents too!

I usually slide the shell holder out a bit and just check the first round to make sure its what its supposed to be/what I want. I never really thought about inspecting the whole box. I'll try from now on.

A while back I bought a box of Winchester white box .45acp 230gr JHP. One round was loaded incorrectly. One side of the case was crushed about 1/3 of the way down by the bullet when it was seated. I took a picture of it, and emailed Winchester. They naturally wanted the round, and the lot number of the box. They paid for shipping, had UPS come pick it up, and I got to keep the remaining 49 rounds. A week or two later I received a nice letter, and a coupon for $25.00 worth of free ammo.

Let them know about it, and I'm sure they will take care of it. If they do, be sure to tell them thanks. They appreciate it

I just sent back 2 boxes of Winchester rimfire ammo that would function in my firearms, and they (after a couple months) sent me back a letter with two $20.oo Winchester ammunition coupons. Which I used to by WWB centerfire ammo, which has worked fine for me. Have switched to CCI and Federal for my rimfire needs.

I'd sure be happy to buy those shells from you. Our WalMart hasn't had any shells in about a year or so.

This whole product tampering thing started with Tylenal tampering back in the '70's. It's all gone downhill ever since . . . just imagine how much we consumers pay the retail industry in extra costs just to have various products "tamper proofed". Words like integrity and honesty and respect used to mean something, but our country has produced a generation, maybe two, laden with those who do not understand these important words and what they mean.

What I find unfortunate is the maligning title of this thread. Not knowing how the round disappeared, Winchester and WM are accused. Does the OP really mean that WM stole a round of ammunition? Perhaps it was in the manufacturing process. Perhaps an employee somewhere along the line. Perhaps a shoplifter. I doubt the evil corporations did it intentionally.

99 bullets out of 100 is not a big deal you crybaby. if only 50 were in there then you have something to complain about, or if you bought more expensive ammo instead of the cheapo walmart ammo then you might have something. Its walmart, if it wasnt for them you wouldnt be able to buy cheap ammo at all. so dont be ungreatful and dont blow your top for one bullet buddy

Looks like we may have a troll above!

Boy, we sure all have our stories about this. I was in Reno, NV. several months back during the huge ammunition rush not too long after Obama got elected and stopped in the Cabela's there.

I was looking for .22 rimfire ammo and the whole rimfire aisle was completely bare except for a few bricks of Aguila 60 gr. Sub Sonic Sniper. I decided to get a couple of bricks and when I grabbed two of them and started to walk away, it seemed like something wasn't quite right with the bricks.

I opened both and both were short one box. I'm not accusing Cabela's of anything but I'm glad I checked the bricks.

I never had a problem with Winchester, but a few years ago I had a problem with Remington, EVERY SINGLE TIME I bought some. Loaded ammo or brass cases, no matter where I bought them.

Oh sure, they responded OK and sent me extra brass or a coupon for some more ammo.

Regardless, too much trouble. I avoid Rem. like the plague.
