I spent some time working for my mother-in-law this past weekend and as pay her husband gave me some 9mm rounds. It was kind of a mixed bag of stuff. Included was a partial (40 rounds) box of Hirtenberger 9mm Luger. The box is marked "100 grs Soft Point FL-Bullet" and "Law Enforcement Grade" The cases are stamped +P+.

Has anyone seen this stuff before? What should I expect?

By the way I'll be using it (maybe) in a Glock G17 or G19.

I believe that's machine gun ammo. It might be OK in the Glock.

I have some and have fired it in a Browning High Power without problems. It is HOT, however. It doesn't seem to work well in small autos, possibly due to very high slide speed.

its not the super hot Hert subgun ammo(for stens, uzi's) just the standard Hert which is OK in most 9mm handguns

I've shot the 100-gr +P+ Hert stuff in Glocks and Heritage Stealths. Never had a problem with it. Cheaper Than Dirt used to sell it back in the early '90s when they were actually cheap . . .

The Hirtenberg +P+ loading was, indeed, intended for submachine gun use. I have fired several hundred rounds through a Browning High Power with no ill effects, but the point of impact is several inches lower at 25 feet than standard velocity ammo.

I seem to remember reading that this was designed to have better penetration on windshields with less chance of glancing off than FMJ had. There was a fair bit of buzz about this stuff back in the mid '90s in some of the LEO related gun mags. I shot a bunch of it in a Hi Power and Glock 19 without any problems, but it would not feed reliably in my VP70z at all (I miss that gun!).

I think some folks are thinking of two different rounds, the 124gr stuff was marketed as "sub-gun" ammo, the 100gr SP was marketed as a sort of non-hollow point solution to stopping power/overpenetration issues.

I have tested the 100gr stuff, it is much slower than the charts say, and the bullet doesn't expand at all, even a little bit, in water or gelatin testing.

I'd shoot it up for practice if I had a bunch.

Yes, for clarity I am referring to the 100gr SP marked +P+. I think that it was doing around 1300 out of my BHP, but it has been a long time since I shot any of it. It was pretty low recoil, and shot very flat, but was also pretty unimpressive on milk jugs full of water.

The hirtenberger FL rounds are great rounds to shot, but only for practicse or plinking. For sd there are much better rounds avialable, especially for the shooters in the United States The 100 grain fl bullet is the standard service load of our police here in austria and as far as I know they doesen't work better than ball. The EKO Cobra (that's an elite unit of the police) uses another service load, the hirtenberger/fioochi emb. I use the 100 grain FL load out of my glock 17 and as I have said before, for plinking these stuff is great.

I shot a lot of that 100gr +P+ ammo in my pistols with no problem. Back in the early to mid 90's it was pretty cheap stuff and a lot of people were shooting it. There was nothing special about it except the velocity which was in the 1,300 fps range in most pistols. Oh, it did have a large/long muzzle flash when shooting at night.
