Default Are you still seeing ammo shortages in your neck of the US?

It's now 8 July and the rumors (or posts, if you will) that the ammo shortage is coming to an end are apparently false, at least in my neck of the US here in KY. It seems anything that can be fired from a handgun and .223 are still like birds that have grown wings and flown off the store shelves. I really thought demand would have waned by now, but I don't think thats the case. .357 Magnum, .38 Special, 9mm, 45 ACP, and virtually all handgun ammo is non-existent here. Geez - even .22 LR is not available at the local Wallyworld.

What have you folks seeing for handgun ammo availability in your area?

I stopped at WM yesterday and found nothing (no 38spl, no 40S&W, no 357mag, no 22LR). Dept mgr was working the sporting goods counter. He says he gets shipments sporadically and they are gone within a day. He claims he heard things should be changing around the end of July. We'll see.

I was at my local Pro Bass/Outdoor World earlier today looking at the empty ammo shelves. The department manager commented that he only has ammo about 3 hours a week and he never knows when those three hours will be. Said you have to be there when they open on the day ammo arrives or you are out of luck.

Yes, we still have an ammo shortage here in Michigan.

My local shop has been getting some stuff in. Lots of Wolfe 223 and 7.62X39. Also CCI and WW 9mm, but it is $14 per box. He has some, but not a lot of 22lr and 357 but no 38 special. The local WM has no 9mm or 22lr. I did stop at another WM last week and they had just got some WW 9mm in. Not much else though.

Ammo here is coming back, so far the only thing that I still don't see is .223, last time I was at the local shop he had shelves full of everything and the only thing that had any limits on it was .380, he had it limited to 1 box per person but there was alot of it there.

Now if only he will start to get some primers in

I have a hard time finding .380, 9mm and .45s.

.357 is tough but not as bad as the aforementioned three calibers.

My gunstore/range has lots of .40 S&W by various manufacturers, ditto .45. It has .38 special fmj by various mfgs. But no 9x19 mm yet. Until recently, they didn't have anything.

The only pistol caliber that I can find with a certain regularity is .357 Sig. Online, I can find .32 ACP more often than many other chamberings (thanks to the good folks at Prvi).

Non defensive shotgun shells remain available as before.

Here in North Carolina--still big shortages. Went to shoot today and they had no 357 on the shelf at all, and in the other calibers, mostly expensive self-defense stuff.

Thank goodness I stocked up years ago in preparation for the zombie apocalypse/WWIII.

In Kentucky I found ammo at a gun shop in bowling green. No luck at the local Wally Mart there.
North Carolina, got ammo at Wal Mart.

Handgun ammo is beginning to make a come back; I've seen 9mm 100 round packs at Wal-Mart, as well as 50 round boxes of .40 S&W and .45 ACP. Occassionally there are boxes of .38/.357, but they are rare. .223/5.56 ammo is nowhere to be found.

Wallyworld up here has .40 all the time, 9mm seems like every other week, went in yesterday and they had some .357. No .22lr, .223 value packs. We have a discount sporting goods store (two stores total) that had at least 10 cases of various calibers. I was in awe. They actually have been in stock, at reasonable prices, with most calibers. They had .45, .357, .9mm, .38, .357, .44, a couple cases of .380, .223 Wolf, .223 Rem, 7.62 Rem and Wolf, Fed .22lr, my head was spinning too much to remember all of it.

So it seems to be getting better around here. Hopefully.

Generally speaking, I can find something in just about any caliber, however there is very little choice between manufacturers and different loads. What is absolutely not available is cheap ammunition! The days of cheap surplus ammo seem to over, and I do not expect them to return.

At Cabela's KC Friday and Monday. Much better selection than they had a month ago. Lots of .380. Plenty of most others and various makers. I picked up some .38 SPL and .32 H&R there.

Two gun shops in NW Missouri had more than last visit also. Picked up some Federal .32 H&R at one.

Usual SW MO walmart had .40 S&W in Blazer Brass, WW, and Federal target loads, but not much else.

Zip on any handgun other than occasional .40 S&W north of Seattle @ WW.
Exceptions, the local range/gun-shop seems to have a stash of 9X19, .38, some .357 mag. Lowest price at the gun shop was $15 for 50 FMJ 9X19.

In Northern Nevada (Reno/Sparks).
Rifle ammo is beginning to appear fairly consistently but pistol is still hit and miss.
Wally World gets it sporadically.
Some gun shops and Cabela's will have pistol ammo but pricey.

Arkdweller

you are lucky to find .22 at walmart around here, but I did see some .25! I saw a 100rd box of .40 S&W about a month back from winchester but left it for the next guy because i have a little under 100 rds now, but I really wish I had bought it

In my area of PA you can go into any gun/outdoors store (large or small, big chain or mom 'n' pop) and get anything you want. Handgun and rifle centerfire, rimfire, etc. there is no shortage here. Prices are of course higher than we would like but I don't think you will ever see them come down anywhere ever again.

Default Ammo

I was in WM yesturday in a Nebraska town near the river where theres a big bridge for UP trains to cross over the big river between NE and IA. LOTS of ammo. This WM even had guns, never seen a WM with guns in Iowa. Anyway I brough a bunch of 22 LR home with me. I could not believe the selection they had.

I'm not seeing any evidence of the ammo situation ending. Prices are still insane and ammo shelves are still mostly bare.

Animal, (I always think of a Sesame Street character )

We've got a pretty good stash of ammo at the stores up here in the north part of the state and across the border in No' Ca'lina.

I think it's letting up because it is summertime. However, I see the prices are still much higher than I'm used to...

Local walMart had a case of winchester 333 bulk .22 this morning for $10.47 per box.

Makes it just a little higher per shot than the last federal 550 bulk that I bought. I got a box just to have something different.

All other handgun type ammo spots were empty.

Two veries; very little and very expensive. Same goes for primers. I was looking in my basement for an aerosol can of brake cleaner, and I found some boxes of .380 cartridges that I put away years ago and had forgotten.

I'm in southern michigan and it's dry for Wal-mart or other cheap ammo. The high price places have some.

Talked to my local gun dealer last week, he said things are pretty much back to normal and he can get any ammo he wants now. Walmart has more than they did. I saw about 4 boxes of 38Spl there yesterday, they couldn't keep any on the shelf for longer than 10 min for months! I'm in N/E Indiana.

That must be peculiar to east of the Mississippi? Or being closer to distributors?
Out west, it's dryer than grasshoppers on a griddle, to quote Jimmy Stewart. Rarely 9X19, .38, or .45ACP

Shortage still goes on with higher prices. I finally secured my new M&P15 (VTAC version) after a 10 month wait. I purchased Hornady & Federal Premium 223's from Midway.com...Hornady was $0.62/round and Federal Vital Shok's were...hold on...$1.51/round.

It's not a question of cost...it's a question of availabilty!

The Gander Mountain store in Marquette, MI had a lot of Black Hills .223 ammo Saturday. Both red box and blue box Black Hills.
There was some .22 LR but not the CCI Standard Velocity I was looking for.
Lots of shotgun shells at high prices.

Local Bass Pro had tons of .223 a week ago when I went in, almost nothing else.

When I say tons, I mean the bottom row of an entire aisle. Probably 30 feet long, nothing but green-box Remington .223. Didn't note the price as I don't shoot .223.

Wonder if it's still there a week later...

I wouldn't say the ammo crunch is over by any means.
I was at Wallace World a couple of nights ago, and I did a
quick check of the ammo dept..
Now, I'll admit things looked better than the last time I was
there.
They had blazer brass in .40 S&W and 9mm.
I don't recall seeing any .45 ACP..
No .22 LR of any flavor.
So, things looked better as far as my .40 pistol, but
still pretty grim as far as the .22's. I want to see some
bricks of .22 LR..
The last time I was there, there was no pistol ammo
of any type, cept for maybe 22 magnum..
There was no win white box at all. No hollow points.
But if I want FMJ 180 grain .40 S&W I was in luck. Had a
few boxes. I didn't buy any cuz it was after 10 PM, and they
won't sell ammo at night.

BTW... The blazer brass was still at the "pre-shortage" price.
The BB 180 grain FMJ was $12.47? or thereabouts..
Same as last year. So at least they aren't gouging on the price.

Still short supply here in SW Florida, but getting better. At least local gun shops have some to sell now, where a few months ago they would sell you 2 boxes max and ONLY if you bought a firearm. The prices are double at the gun shops for what they do have vs Walmart or Bass Pro Shop. I have found that both these stores are hit or miss. I have gotten lucky and scored a few boxes of my .40 S&W a couple of times at Walmart by going in every day on my lunch hour and checking. Yesterday I actually hit the jackpot at Wally World as on my daily lunch trip to the ammo counter I noticed an unopened case (5 - 100 round boxes) of .40 on the floor that hadn't been put on the shelf yet, all of which I immediately purchased! Range time this weekend, YEAH! As for Bass Pro Shop (I shouldn't give away my secrets, but I know how hard it can be to score ammo) call them (ask for the hunting dept) every morning and ask if they got your ammo in (call when they first open, because the ammo only stays on the shelf minutes after they put it out) and if they have what you are looking for they will let you purchase and pay for it by credit card over the phone. Since it's now paid for they will put behind the counter until you can go pick it up. Hope this helps...

I’m in the Raleigh, NC area and it’s still pretty dry. Walmart is getting it in on a regular basis, but it’s quickly snapped up. I see .40 remaining on the shelf the most, but it goes after a day or so. Some gun shops have a little, but they are charging more. Some are gouging, especially at the gun shows.

Must be par for the gun loving state of KY, only thing I've seen at stores for a while are .25's and .357sig's. I did snatch a box of .40 Hydra-Shoks at my gun shop before that shipment was cleaned out.

Its still slim pickens in these parts. I found 3 boxes of Federal 40 S&W in Walmart day before yesterday. First time I'd seen ANY pistol ammo in this particular store in months. Say what you will about Wally World but they haven't jacked up their prices. I paid 12.97 per box. Pretty sure that was what I paid PO - pre Obama.

I'm still waiting for delivery of backordered ammunition from several internet suppliers. Examples: .38 Special ordered from Midway on 3/24 (most recent estimated delivery date, September), .45 ACP ordered from Cabellas in May (estimated delivery date in August), .45 ACP (different manufacturer) ordered from Cabella's two weeks ago (estimated delivery date July 24). I'm not holding my breath on any of these estimated dates. For example, the Midway date gets re-estimated every two weeks or so.

Went to wallyworld today and they had 100 round value packs of .223!! Got six of those. they also had the usual .40, a couple boxes of 9mm (which I bought), 550rd bricks of 22lr (got a couple of those), had some .357, .38, and the other various rifle calibers they always have. Lots of shotgun shells.

Also bought some more Shoot-n-see targets too. It was a good day.
