Aguila Ammo
Gentlemen: I just purchased a box of 50 rounds Aguila 38spl. 158 grain JHP ammo. I have never used this stuff before and am wondering if anyone has experience with it. The price was right $20.99 so I thought I would give it a try.
Thanks

I might have my corporate affiliations mixed up, but I believe Aguila is the brand name of Cartuchos Deportivos de Mexico (CDM) which was a Remington affiliate, and had their factory and production lines set up with Remington technical assistance. The ammo should be perfectly serviceable.

I've used their .22, .45 ACP and 12 ga ammo and found it to be quality stuff. They have some unusual loads that are interesting to try.

I have 5 50 round boxes of Aquila 158gr 357 Magnum that I bought at the Knob Creek machine gun shoot last fall for $7.00 a Box.. The Price has trippled on this ammo since the Obama election, but still fair priced being some "Folks" at these gunshows etc wating $40+ a box for 38/357..
I have used this ammo before with great results but haven't ever heard that "Remington" was affiliated with them.
$20.99 a box for 38 spls is a Deal Nowdays
Also the link shows great prices on 357 but also shows out of stock.. I got mine from Cole's or Cope's? I get the two confused & there always at the KCR shoot & gunshows.

I've used a lot of Aguila's 22LR ammo and it's high quality stuff. I would expect their centerfire to be at least as good.

I have not shot a lot of it, but I have shot several hundred rounds in various calibers. Never a hickup. It's cleaner than Wolf. Of course, the inside of a portapotty is cleaner than Wolf.

Here in Texas about 5 years ago, I bought Aguila 38 Specials in 158 grain lead or metal case for $6.00/50 rounds. Never had a dud. It honestly shot just as good as Remington or Winchester in an old 1940s M&P. I killed many a feral hog in a trap with that old gun and bullets. Don't let anybody kid you, 158 LRN is not as bad a stopper as some claim it is.
Overall, Aguila is great ammo and I wish I could get 6 buck a box 38s again!

Got that right. Try 3 or 4 hundred rounds of Wolf 7.62x39 in an AKM during a day at the range. Not only does it give me a sore throat, but the AK is full of carbon and red chips. What is that red stuff? I tear the whole gun down and waste about 4 pairs of old socks durng the solvent bath just to get it clean. Love Wolf, though.

I recently found 49 pieces of Aguila .38 Especial brass while dumpster diving at the range. I looked a bit harder and then found the 50th, and it was a loaded round of 158 gr. JHP. Shortly thereafter I did some chrono work with the .38 (E)special and also took that loaded round with me. To say the velocity was low would be an understatement. I think I still have it written down somewhere. If I can find it I'll post it.

All the Aguila I shot was full power, not saying you can't find a bad box of anything though. Seems like most foreign 38s are hotter, the old Aguilas I shot were. S&B is the hottest.

OK, here it is... One round of Aguila .38 Especial 158 Granos Semi-Encamisada Punta Hueca (SJHP) yielded all of 673 FPS. While this is only one round, I did shoot all kinds of stuff over the chrono that day and I experienced nothing out of the ordinary. This is the kind of velocity that's good for putting holes in paper and not much else. Hell, I shoot chipmunks with ammo that's stronger than this!

Oops, forgot to mention barrel length! Ruger SP101 with 2 1/4" barrel. Short barrel, I know, but it was still the weakest load of the day.

That seems close for a 2 1/4 inch gun. I have seen Federal 158 LRN go at that speed. I really dont know how that compares to Win or Rem.
Somebody needs to go run them across a chrono.

I've used Aguila 9mm in my H&K P7. It produced more gas system fouling than some other brands, but the fouling came out easily and never caused a malfunction.

I have had problems with the Aguila 180 grain FMJ .40 cal S&W loads in my Ruger KP94. I have run many different types of ammo through this gun with no issues whatsoever. But the Aguila first round has to be manually inserted or the gun jams. The remaining bullets in the mag run through with no problems.

38 super
I have fired close to 6000 rnds. of the 38 super as of now, no problems at all. My Colt and Kimber run real well on this stuff...alittle on the dirty side.
At one time I was getting 1000 rnd. cases for $165 to my door. My local Gun shop always has it in stock...selling it for around $20 a box of 50(Richmond,Va.)

Aguila .38 ammo is Not Plus P.
You can't make a standard pressure round that's safe in the iffy ones without giving up some velocity. Cowboy ammo isn't loaded any hotter in several brands and that's essentially what Aguila is in .38 special.
It might have something to do with the fact .38s are the most powerful cartridge that's approved for the ordinary citizen in Mexico. More powerful rounds are considered military ordnance and restricted to LEO's, army, and folks with clout.
I'm not sure of the actual law on the topic nor whether it's changed any since I was there.. but getting .357s or .45s in Mexico once involved paying local officials a small fee. I'd suspect that is still the case,
Keeping .38 ammo detuned is more sensible when you consider whether someone might shoot some of it at you.

good stuff...
I have used Aguila in many different calibres, and think it is just fine. I did not realize that 20.99 was a good price these days for .38s, I would check out Georgia Arms reloads...

About 5 years ago I bought 5 cases (1000 rds per case) of Aguila .357 with the 158 jhp tip...... ($199.00 per case as I recall). I have 3 cases left. Chronos at 1350 fps from a 6 inch 686. I like it and the brass reloads just fine. I'd buy Aguila again.
