This all started out as a sweet deal that turned sour, but now all is right with the world once more!

I collect 10mms and about a month ago I found a smokin' deal on a S&W 1026 on Gunbroker. You could tell from the pics that it was a bit rough, but it had a 'buy it now' price of $400. I have a 1006, 1076, 1086 and 1046, but I don't have a 1066 or 1026 yet so I jumped on it. I stopped by my local gun store and had them fax their FFL and had a money order in the mail in a couple days. Two weeks went by without hearing a word from the seller. Each time I stopped by the gun store they would shake their heads and tell me, "Not yet." I started emailing and calling the seller (a pawn shop) trying to find out when the gun shipped, how it was shipped, and if their was a tracking number, but I kept getting the run around. Either they would call me back, or the person I needed to talk to was out. I was beginning to think I was getting ripped off when the manager finally gave me a UPS tracking number. It turned out that the gun was shipped less than a week after I had put the money order in the mail and it had been signed for at my gun store almost three weeks ago. I print out the UPS tracking info and drive to the store (it's a pharmacy with a sporting goods section) and show the manager. He calls over the person who signed for it and she says she gave it to some other girl because the two guys who normally work the gun counter were both out hunting. This girl says she put it on the rack behind the rifles, but now it's nowhere to be found (it had never even been logged in!). They look high and low for it, but can't find it anywhere. They write me a check for $425 to cover my costs, but this is an out-of-production gun that is difficult to find and when you do find them usually run in the $700 to $800 range. I am pissed, but there isn't much I can do so Monday I walk out of the store with my check for $425.

Today, when I get home from work, I find a message on my phone saying they had found my gun. As soon as my wife gets home to watch the kids I zoom into town, give them their check back and fill out the paperwork. Turns out that the head guy at the gun counter just got back from vacation and he knew right where it was. He was very apologetic and waived the transfer fee which I thought was a nice gesture.

So now I have my long awaited 1026. It's pretty holster worn and the trigger isn't great, but it's still serviceable. Now the question is, do I send it back to S&W for a tune up and refinishing, or do I just keep it as is and make it my new truck gun?

(Sorry for the Glock gunmat, but that's what I had on my bench at the time.)

I think she looks ok but a tuneup would do it good, glad it worked out for you and nice 10mm! Congrats.

That's an interesting story and a nice pistol. Glad everything turned out for you.

Nice weapon, before sending it off to be tuned up. take it out for a test spin and see how it handles.

Oh the Glock 17 gun mat hurts the guns value in my eyes at least.

It's a bad feeling when you seemingly get the run-around on something you've already paid for. I quit dealing with one shop over it. Glad yours worked out for you. I'm contemplating getting my own FFL to alleviate the problem, but it would probably be just another headache.

Excellent story on a fine 10mm.It doesn't look 1/2 as bad as the description and I would definately send it to S+W for a tune up and trigger work.....God Bless.....Mike

For the price you paid it would be worth sending it in for a tune up. Other than the troubles you had trying to get it in your hands you got a great deal on a nice gun. It may not be pristine, but at least you won't feel bad if it gets a small scratch in it. I have a nearly new 1076 and would feel terrible if I scratched it. I shoot it every now and then but as much as my 1066 which runs perfectly, but isn't perfect on the outside (with only a couple of visual defects, it is one of my favorite pistols).

Looks very nice in your picture, are the problems internal? Nice fined let us know how it shoots.

The holster wear is very superficial and difficult to pick up with the camera. There are a lot of little spots on the slide that are a little more polished and some of the bluing is worn off the sights. The grips also have some spots where the checkering is worn away. I've got some of the palmswell FBI grips on order (I like a thicker grip) and then I think I'll just use it 'as is' for a while and see how it works out. As some of you have mentioned, with the gun being in the condition it is I won't be afraid to give it some honest use. Either way, I think I'll still do the action job. It's not that it's too heavy, but the trigger just feels rather rough. If I can't find someone locally to do it it'll probably go back to the factory.

I thought a little,,lets see if I undrstand this,,a drug dealer and a gun shop, now that is a wonderful combination

It's definately small-town America! They actually have a great t-shirt. It has the name of the pharmacy, and then underneath it says, "Your local source for guns and drugs!"

Great story, glad it worked out for you in the end.

Congrats on the purchase and great story. I was recently searching used 1026's on gunbroker and did a completed auction search to see if any sold recently. I saw your closed auction and thought "Son of a Biscuit, someone got a steal". Even though the pics showed some wear and marks, I wouldn't have batted an eye to pick it up at that price.

Nice score, hope she works out well for you.

Good deal! Glad it turned out for the better. From the pics that 1026 doesn't look too bad to me.

Thankfully your gun store finally found your gun, but I hope the BATF doesn't pay them a visit and find they have a history of misplaced and unlogged guns.

I got a new pair of factory 1076 grips for it and the gun fits my hand much better now. I also picked up an Aker paddle holster for it. If I'm going to use it as a 'truck gun' I want to be able to put it on and take it off quick and easy. I think I can live with the blemishes on the slide. They're pretty hard to see unless it's in the right light. I will definitely be looking into a trigger job and probably some night sights though. I actually like the way it balances better than the 1076, and there also seems to be less muzzle flip. I should have picked up a 1026 years ago!
