This all started out as a sweet deal that turned sour, but now all is right with the world once more!
I collect 10mms and about a month ago I found a smokin' deal on a S&W 1026 on Gunbroker. You could tell from the pics that it was a bit rough, but it had a 'buy it now' price of $400. I have a 1006, 1076, 1086 and 1046, but I don't have a 1066 or 1026 yet so I jumped on it. I stopped by my local gun store and had them fax their FFL and had a money order in the mail in a couple days. Two weeks went by without hearing a word from the seller. Each time I stopped by the gun store they would shake their heads and tell me, "Not yet." I started emailing and calling the seller (a pawn shop) trying to find out when the gun shipped, how it was shipped, and if their was a tracking number, but I kept getting the run around. Either they would call me back, or the person I needed to talk to was out. I was beginning to think I was getting ripped off when the manager finally gave me a UPS tracking number. It turned out that the gun was shipped less than a week after I had put the money order in the mail and it had been signed for at my gun store almost three weeks ago. I print out the UPS tracking info and drive to the store (it's a pharmacy with a sporting goods section) and show the manager. He calls over the person who signed for it and she says she gave it to some other girl because the two guys who normally work the gun counter were both out hunting. This girl says she put it on the rack behind the rifles, but now it's nowhere to be found (it had never even been logged in!). They look high and low for it, but can't find it anywhere. They write me a check for $425 to cover my costs, but this is an out-of-production gun that is difficult to find and when you do find them usually run in the $700 to $800 range. I am pissed, but there isn't much I can do so Monday I walk out of the store with my check for $425.
Today, when I get home from work, I find a message on my phone saying they had found my gun. As soon as my wife gets home to watch the kids I zoom into town, give them their check back and fill out the paperwork. Turns out that the head guy at the gun counter just got back from vacation and he knew right where it was. He was very apologetic and waived the transfer fee which I thought was a nice gesture.
So now I have my long awaited 1026. It's pretty holster worn and the trigger isn't great, but it's still serviceable. Now the question is, do I send it back to S&W for a tune up and refinishing, or do I just keep it as is and make it my new truck gun?
(Sorry for the Glock gunmat, but that's what I had on my bench at the time.)
