Wow . . . are these guys SERIOUS?

I went into a fairly new pawn shop in my area this evening . . . looking for pinned barreled Smiths and such.

They'd just gotten in a very early 80s 4" Model 67, with Pach rubbers on it. Not in bad condition, but no 98% gun either.

Wrong grips, surely no box or materials, and a gun that had a few minor scuffs . . . certainly not cherry, just a nice "shooter."

"What do you want for it," I asked. "Six Fifty" was the answer.

I tried to kindly tell them that getting $450 for it would be a stretch.

"Oh no," the guy replied, "I've checked on line and that's what they are selling for."

Damn internet . . . folks find some unfired 99% safe queen, with the box and all that went with it, on Guns America or Gunbroker . . . and think that their "shooter" is worth that too. I wouldn't have given him $400 for it.

What in the heck is the world coming to?

Oh well . . . another "gun shop" I can cross off my list.

Remember....they can always ask for some outrageous price. But.....you can always tell them to "stick it"!!!! Bob

Yep, they can ask what they want but actually selling it for $650 will be a chore.

As described, I think that's about a $325 revolver at best.

Just because he probably paid to much for it he has to take it out on the customers.

Sad thing is, I have seen similar items and someone ends up buying it for too much.:(

Hey Tom, my brother is a partner in a group that owns three pawn shops, one in Columbus, GA, one in Phenix City, Ala, and another in Dothan, Ala.

They have bought a lot in Warner Robins, GA and hope to begin construction on a new shop there some time after the first of 2010. Right now, my plans are to retire from teaching at the end of this school year and run the guns/sporting goods section of the new shop.

If that comes to pass, you can shop with me and I'll give you a bargain on that gun--only $575, just for you, and that price is good today only.;):D

It is greed. The same thing is happening with ammo. It is getting harder and harder to pursue my firearms hobby. All of the ammo is stockplied in peoples garages "just in case". Firearms are being bought for outrageous prices by people who have no intention of shooting them "just in case". I just want to be able to afford to go shooting and to occasionally buy or trade a gun. I guess I need a cup of coffee. I am grouchy this morning.

I see the same stuff at the Gun Shows. It's almost always the guy with the small case that has the glass top. He's got several guns in there either with outrageous prices or no price at all.

But, show after show, the same guns, same dealer, same case.

He's gonna hold 'em till he gets his price!

Hope he gets it. If some numbnutz pays that fot a 67, imagine what another numbnutz would pay for a 27 ?????? My wife is bitching that the neighbor has her house listed for twice what it's worth. I say all the more power to her, if she gets double for hers, then there's got to be another idiot out there that will give me double the value for mine! (I mean ours ).

Pawn shop prices

I am not at all surprised. I have looked at gun prices at several local pawn shops over time and they all have higher prices than brand new guns with a warranty. That is my experience, despite those who will write a story about getting a great deal themselves. It is not just guns either, their tools, both battery powered and corded are priced at least as high as new if in "good" condition, a bit less than new if they look like they have been dragged behind a pickup truck for 10 miles.

The shop owner is mighty proud of it. It will probably sit for a while.

Yeah . . . and it is JUST a common old 4" barreled M67 .38 Spl. Amazing.

I don't know if it will sit there awhile or not . . . for the shop is new and I can't imagine them selling much there if their prices are so out-of-line throughout the store. If so, the banker will probably end up with the guy's houses for collateral . . . or they'll have a fire sale.

Another pawn shop here had a 3" barreled M27-2 in nickle a couple of months ago for an equally outrageous price . . . due to the fact that the gun was rough and had rusty parts.

He had it on Gunbroker for $950 I believe . . . priced as if it was in much better shape. As much as I would like a 3" M27-2, I had to pass on that rusty dog.

I don't see greed in the price. Perhaps the seller is just wishing? Maybe he'll get lucky. It's America (at least for now) and the man can sell (or try to) his inventory at any number he likes. If he sits on the gun long enough, he's gonna adjust the price. I don't begrudge his attempt to hit a home run.

The market will either encourage or discourage his pricing.

tom...i never have luck at pawn shops either...commonly available guns at outrageous prices....sad thing is...someone will buy it,think they got a good deal which will reinforce prices like that

The first Model 67 that I ever saw was in a TG&Y, five and dime store in the early 1970s. They had mismarked it for $67.00....
I ran home to get my check book and when I returned there was a man already buying it. We visited outside the store and he said that when he saw the price, he just plunked down the money.

I learned a lesson about carrying gun money in your billfold or at least a check that day.

Rule 303

Only takes one speculator to throw a gun on a website for twice what all the others are posted ,for some other seller to assume that's what they're "selling for".Listing and selling are two different things.

What make laugh is if you decide to trade a gun in a shop the first thing they try is whipping out the blue book. " Yeah according to the book your LNIB pre 18 is is good condition and worth about $275".
