K-22 Combat Masterpiece questions.

Pictured are my pre Mod 18 K-22's ser # K 1329xx and K 1745xx.

Those serial numbers are for early and late 1952. Note the hammers (above) and front sights...

I suppose the hammer could have been changed to a target one at some point but the obvious difference in the sights have me wondering if 1952 was some sort of transition year for the K-22. Or has my revolver been altered?

What's up with the hammer and sights on these revolvers from the same year?

I don't have an answer to why the difference in the front sights but I do have a similar observation. I also, have two Pre-18's from 1952 in the same configuration as yours.

Serial # K146XXX has no pins for the front sight and std hammer.
Serial # K171XXX has two pins for the front sight and a target hammer.

Same as yours.........perhaps if given the target trigger it was also given pinned front sights in case someone wanted to change them out. I don't know, hopefully someone with more knowledge will be along to provide some answers.

Maybe I can't see well enough against the fabric background, but it looks to me as though the only difference in the front sights is that the sight base pins have been polished to the surface in the older gun and left standing proud in the more recent one. Could that be evidence of a front sight replacement at some point on the later gun? Maybe.

Those are all beauties. More and more I think I need a four-inch K-22 to go with the six-inch models I have picked up.

Mr. Wilson would the target (wide) hammer be original on the later gun?

Target hammers were an option as early as 1952, and this hammer could have been part of this gun when it was shipped. But hammers are an easy replacement, and this could be a later hammer dropped into this gun some time after its original purchase.

David, I looked at my Pre-18 (K146XXX) with a bright light and a magnifying glass and you are exactly right......both pins are there, just highly polished to where they blend in perfectly and can't be seen without a very close look.

Woodsltc mine is that way too. Polished flat.

Seems to me some experts have said that sometimes the pins didn't get polished down flush. Just means whomever was on the wheel that day didn't get them all the way down. Doesn't mean repairs, necessarily.

RdrBill's gun has the shorter ramp base and patridge sight that were used on the longer-barrel K-22 Masterpieces. One pin would hold it in place. If you look at his family photo, you will see that only one of his several guns has the shorter front sight base; the rest have the longer bases, and all of them (except for the more recent stainless revolver) have ramp front blades characteristic of the K-22 CMs. I bet all of them (except possiby the stainless gun, about which I am ignorant) have two pins tying them to the barrel.

And I think SP is probably correct that some days the pins were polished, and some days they were not. Sure would have been nice to have a dash variant to define the policy, though.

I have two 4"ers. K 1472XX has a standard hammer; K 2119XX has a target hammer. Is the target hammer original? No way to know without a letter - and I'm not going to spend the $ to letter the piece because it isn't 95+%. Both have the front sight pins polished flush. Mike
