Right where I need to be.
Tonight I was killing some time and went into a local Goodwill store. I was surprised to find 3 - 1 lb. containers of smokeless powder in a display case for $3.00 each. There were two containers of 2400 and one of Unique. Manufacture dates on the cans were 2007 and 2008. I carefully unscrewed the lid of each one to ensure the integrity of the plastic seal over the opening. All three containers appeared un-opened. They even had there original price tags of around $21.00 per can. I bought all three for $9.00.

QUESTION....Would any of you have any concern about using this powder given that the containers appeared new and intact?

Thanks,

If it was sealed, no problem. I'd use it in a heartbeat. Good find! I'm amazed it was there for you to buy.

Thanks...I too was shocked to find it. I guess I was at the right place at the right time. The fella at the register didn't know what it was used for and was a litte surprised when I told him it was gun powder for handgun cartridges.

If you don't want to load it up to shoot, toss it out in your flower garden and watch the miracle come spring time. It's a lot cheaper at the price you paid than using "Miracle Grow".

I'm amazed they would sell it. Most likely they didn't know what it is.

The fact that they were sealed would put my mind at rest about safely using them. Knowing me, I would probably want to pour some of the powder out and examine it to make sure it looked like it was uniform (ie, not several powders mixed together.)

It is pretty easy to find a photo of what each powder should look like, either on-line or in reloading manuals, so I would probably compare what's in the cans to what it's supposed to look like.

Great find. You never know what you will find

I go to good will to by old frying pans to shoot at.Paper is ok to shoot at,but at distance a pan will let you know you hit it. Once I was on my way out after buying 3 nice pan targets and I noticed a Lawrence holster in the display case, Extremely nice and only 4 bucks. I snatched it up and it's a perfect fit for my N frame model 29 6 inch.

Old Cast Iron can be collectible and quite pricey.

IF it can be shown to be VERY old it your target might be worth a lot more than you think. There was an interesting article in the WSJ I think about collecting Cast Iron a few weeks ago.

GW Skillets

All the GW skillets I have picked up have been Taiwan stuff that just looked old

I'd use it. If it had been around here Goodwill would have called Haz-mat as soon as they saw them.

Would have probably made the news here. Right before a story about a kid who forgot to bring his lunch to school, or some other waste of time B.S..

I always go in when I am close ,,you never know what you will find

Most likely you got a great deal! I would ask if there's any sign of water damage though??

did you find out who the donor was. i would certainly try sound like a spring cleaning gone wrong or some one got some more reloading equiptment that just looks like car parts to the untrained eye. i have got a friend i used to work with that has a basement full of galf clubs he found at salvation army lots of taylor made, ping etc ... good find

I'd use it. But if extemely paranoid I'd load a few rounds at minimum and shoot them out of my strongest gun as a check. Most likely the kids were cleaning out Grandpa's closet and donated everything to Goodwill.

When they send me to the home or sod farm in a few years Goodwill is going to be a bonanza.

As long as they were unopened sealed containers, I wouldn't worry about it. You got a great deal. However if you find opened not sealed containers of powder, I would avoid it like the plague. You never know when some moron found a bunch of powder cans in grandpa's basement and mixed them all together not knowing there is a difference between them. The best you would get from mixed powder is turning your firearm into a frag grenade.

Unopened & less than 5 years old? I would use it. I have found great stuff at GW. Never hurts to stop & see what just came in.

The only concern is that is it REALLY the correct powder. If the container is definitely sealed that's a good start (could have been re-glued). Appearance is next.... side by side with the real stuff. If all checks out, great.

Forgot to mention one more check: verify weight of charge vs. amount in a case with the real stuff.
I wouldn't want to load up Unique or another fast powder thinking that it was 2400........
