I found the auction, is it okay if I post just the picture? It's a very unique piece. I've always been a fan of the break tops.

The muzzle wear makes it look like a nickel plated gun that was sprayed with gold paint.
 
I don't know if it is the factory finish on that little gun, but it looks like factory engraving to me. The factory did as an option that type of engraving coverage during that time frame. The factory gold plate was notoriously thin and wore off very easily so it could very well be a factory finish also. Of course there is no way to tell about the finish or the engraving without a factory letter. I would not buy the gun at any inflated price from a regular nickel gun without a factory letter or a promise of a refund if it didn't letter as shown.

Hi Lee, I'm not trying to be argumentative here but I just wanted to mention that on the coltforum we're allowed to post pretty much anything, as long as it's not obscene, and the board never gets cluttered up with people trying to hock their own stuff. It's actually been very helpful to a lot of people, myself included, who are considering buying something that is listed on an auction site. They can get feedback from the experts on the forum on stuff they are thinking about spending good money on. They probably saved a lot of people from getting screwed.
Again, I'm not trying to start an argument here as I do love this site and it is very helpful with lots of good people. I just don't think it would create a problem with people lining up to list their own stuff here. That's what the classified section is for anyhow :)

I belonged to a different collector's site that, at first allowed posting of auction listings. Presumably to inform other members of the auction. It got so cluttered with auction listings that the administrator had to ban the practice. Good intentions sometime go afoul. The Colt forum has a much less amount of people at any given time on the site than this one does. I think it's a good call by Lee, just my two cents, Jim Nedela.
 
I just learned there are something like 53,000 people registered here and only a bit over 7,000 on the coltforum so I guess thats why I've never seen it as a problem over there. I hope Lee doesn't see my above post as me criticizing how he runs the forum here. I certainly wasn't. I think Lee does a great job over here.
I wonder why there are so many more members over here. I mean I personally love things about both Colts and S&Ws but I probably lean a bit more towards Colts. Has this forum been around longer or are there just more people into S&Ws? Any thoughts?

It's our unique blend of quality and quantity with some dynamic wit thrown in! Plus, we have better rules. :cool:

I just looked at the number of folks online; 917 vs 45. While I will admit to owning several off-brands with that pony stamped on the side and even going off-site for information, comparing them to us is like comparing apples and ... bananas!

BTW, there's also a rule about not advertising or promoting other forum. We often let that slide a bit, provided you don't post a link.

I am the person who listed the gold plated New Departure a few weeks back, I enjoyed all the comments and felt the gun was correct so I sent for a letter. Yesterday I received a letter from Mr Jinks and it states:

2nd Model, Special order, Shipped May 7, 1902, to Rhodes Brothers Co. (no address) My internet research suggests Tacoma WA, Business est 1892. Of course I will never know for sure.

The records indicate 3.5 barrel, Style 1 engraving, GOLD FINISH, and checkered black hard rubber grips, If you remember it is also inscribed with the name LOWA, there is no mention of that in the letter but I am quite confident it was done prior shipping as the plating is even.

The chambers are perfect, doesn't look like its been fired but the bore does have some roughness, the grips are numbered to the gun, the CC is still vivid, trigger guard and latch bluing is perfect. There is some flaking on the muzzle and front site, the cylinder has lines. Not bad for a gun 108 years new!

Would anyone care to put a value on it?

No offense taken.
We are definitely busy, and S&W's are one of the hottest commodities in the marketplace. Just watch the classifieds on our board for a week. There is no doubt whatsoever that we would be covered with threads supposedly asking a question that were really just pimping auctions within a week of allowing it.
 
Come on guys, at least it's a good paint job! Since the case coloring and grips look OK, I wonder what it would look like if it didn't have that gold on it?
