Hello everyone,

Last week I came across a Model 28-2, 6" barrel with target stocks. Serial number is in the N550000 range.

The revolver is in pretty good mechanical shape so I´m thinking in a possible buy.

The thing is that the HP´s are kinda scarce in my country (Argentina), so this is the first time I came across a Model 28.

Therefore I have some doubts about the finish. I know the HP´s should have a non-polished finish but I´m not sure if this is original to the gun since I´ve never seen one of these before.

According to the pics, what do you think? Does it look like original finish to you? In that case, it should be what is known as blue satin, right?

The stocks are target type with the football cutout. They aren´t in great shape, but I guess they are original to the gun. Should they have the serial number stenciled on the inner surface? I didn´t have the oportunity to remove the stocks.

Thanks a lot in advance for your help.-

NewDeparture.-

Looks correct

The finish and stocks look correct to me and I will be surprised if an expert corrects me, but one might. I read on this site that target stocks usually were not numbered during the same time periods that service stocks were numbered. Bear in mind that Model 28 finishes vary; some were polished better than others. It was opinioned on this site that it depended on which employee was working. A state trooper who used to carry them told me that Model 28s built to fill the state contract were not finished as well as those that had to be displayed in a store for sale.

You can look at lots of good pictures of Model 28s to compare finishes on this thread:
The ultimate Highway Patrolman thread.including N frame ser# ranges(breakdown on Pg.4
You can learn about stocks on this thread: Types of Revolver Grips (?)

Looks right to me. Keep in my that "blued finish" doesn't refer to the color, but the process which uses "bluing salts" to create the finish. The color of the finish may be blue, but not necessarily. In the case of the Model 28, as with most Smith & Wesson handguns, the finish is more black than blue.

The edges of the frame and grip on the 28 should have a matte finish.

Here are some pics of my 28-2, Serial # N96xx. The Magna stocks are numbered to the revolver, but as Gil stated, I don't believe the optional target grips were numbered. Note the matte finish on the bottom of the grip in the last photo.

I agree with the previous two responses, from the pictures it looks original. I doubt the stocks will be numbered to the gun. No target stocks of that time frame has been that I have seen.

Thank you all

Thank you guys, I really aprecciate your answers and the information about stocks. Suggested threads were very useful too.

Since all seems to be original on this HP I guess I´ll buy it on next Monday. The asking price is $750. I know is not exactly a bargain but as I commented previously, firearms prices around here tend to be much higher than in other countries.

Thanks again to all of you :)

my dad used to have a S&W revolver that had a unique finish on it. I am trying to figure out what type it was...if I remember correctly it was a swirly different colored finish? Any suggestions on what that could be?[/B]

Sounds like a case hardened/case colored finish.
