Not particularly rare, just not extremely common. Nothing more than another idiot selling guns on the internet that has no idea what he is talking about. Unfortunately this is not rare at all! It is a .22 Remington Jet, AKA .22 Center-fire Magnum.

Since I have never read of a ".22 Ramjet" before, I thought a search through several wildcat lists that I have and a net search might turn up something...but I couldn't find anything by that name other than the .22 Super Jet and the .22 K-hornet.

He either has a regular Jet, or a perhaps a super Jet or a Jet that has been modified, but in any case he doesn't seem to know what he's talking about.

S&W made "only" 15,000 of these rare Model 53 "RamJets" ! :)

At least it came with two boxes of factory ammo ! That is the "rare" part I guess ! :)

.22 Ram Jet? LOL I think it is .22 Remington Jet. It is a hot little cartridge that can run a 40 grain .222 jacketed bullet to velosities of 1937 fps. Accuracy loads run around 1575 fps. The overall cartridge length is a whopping 1.659" Availability of ammo and/or brass for reloading is questionable.

Just a typo, should have been .22 RemJet as others have stated for .22 Remington Jet. The model 53 is an interesting S&W that has a selector on the hammer so that you can choose to shoot center fire or rimfire. The gun came with 6 inserts that allowed the use of the less expensive .22 LR. Also found with two cylinders thus making the inserts unnecessary. The problem with the inserts was that they expanded after firing and unless the chambers were kept extremely clean and lubricated, they would be difficult to extract. Sometimes they would back out slightly and cause problems rotating the cylinder.

An interesting S&W concept that had a couple of design flaws that made it somewhat troublesome.

A boxed set with the inserts and two cylinders is still very desireable to collectors. Also found on the C&R list so it can be purchased by those of us living in the Peoples Republic of Massachusetts and maybe even Kalifornia.

I just read an article about these the other day. You can get a die set to neck down .357 brass for loading the jet cartridge.

Why do auction people like to put "rare" and "wow" in auctions?

I guess in this case, its rare to see it not have the proper grips...

WOW its got a nice bunch of marks on the cylinder

and Wow, it missing the rare cylinder or conversion sleeves and box...

auctions go figure...

"Rare" would be a M&P in .32 long, a Slabside Conehammer Mauser, or somebody coming to court to tell me what a great marriage they've had for 40 years.

Ramjet technology has been around for quite awhile in the aerospace buisness, what it has to do with firearms is beyond me! LOL!
