I brought this question up earlier, I may have been in the wrong section. I'm fairly new to the forum.

I bought a 38/44 this week S753xx and it has a Target Hammer on it. Before I have it changed back is there a chance this Hammer could have been ordered from the factory.

Is this a late 40's or early 50's HD?

All numbers match, shroud, ejector star and grips. No dates on grip frame indicating a return. Nice satin finish.

Thanks in advance for any help

Your S753XX dates to about 1950-1951 according to the books. That's about when S&W began offering the target hammer.

So, yes it is possible. That said, it would also be pretty unusual.

The only way to know if it was done when manufactured or fit to the gun later would be to get a factory history letter from Roy Jinks, S&W historian.

Thats great information, thank you for taking the time to help me. I can't tell if the sideplate has ever been off. The gun has a turn line and some wear on the bottom of the diamond magnas, but no signs of holster wear.
I'll send for the letter as you suggest and try to get the pics up this weekend.

Thanks again
