Have a few questions in regards to a model 27-2 Nickel finish, N serial prefix, I was told was available. Hoping to see soon, but from verbal description it has 5 3/4" barrel measured from insided frame (from front of cylinder) and has red ramp front sight. It is in a wooden presentation case with blue liner, with no indented slots for tools. I hope it has the small drawer access, but the case may not be original to gun. My questions are: Is it possible to have a factory 6" bbl that is actually 1/4" shorter? Also is it possible to have a factory red ramp front sight on a 27-2 other than the 4" bbl version? I am hoping to view in person soon, and have a better idea on true bbl. length and if the case is original, but wanted to gather any other opinions. Thank you for any replies.

as to the case...yes...27-2's were shipped in the mahogany case with the tools contained in a small cavity with lid from about 79-82...prior to this the tools were in slots along with the gun..be aware that these cases with the cavity and lid did not hold up well and about all of them need to be restored (or have been)from about 82-85 the guns were not shipped in these cases however they were available as an option from S&W.....as to a 6"barrel being a tad shorter....yes....hope this helps...let us know if you get it!

Barrel lengths are nominal and can vary but 1/4" would be a large variance. More likely it was not measured correctly.

The vast majority of 6" (and longer) 27s came with the Patridge front sight designed for target shooting. The ramp was available on special order but in my experience it is very seldom seen.

The 27-2s came standard with the case starting in 1974. After this date they were also shipped with full Target options (a mistake on the 3.5" guns IMP).

welcome to the forum

Another forum member and I were talking about this on the phone one night mainly due this gun.

Barrel measures a 1/32nd over 3 3/4" I called Roy about it and spoke to several others and the general consensus is it took a little more work to finish the muzzle end and could have been a little shy in the forging.
At any rate we both measured several guns and almost every one was about 1/8th" shy of the advertised barrel length.

My 27-3 is a bit short of 6". I have not measured my 3.5" 27-2. It looks close enough. It appears it is a nominal bbl length that refers to a general length possibly for marketing and sales. Your gun probably left the factory that way and has not been modified. Gotta go I'm going to clean my 19-3 in 3 & 15/16".
