I'm planning a trip to the East Coast for next year. I'd like to see the experimental rifles that led up to the M1. I'm talking about the Bang, Hatcher-Bang, primer actuated Garand, gas operated Garand in 276, Pederson, and Colt-Thompson, etc. Does anyone know if they are still in existence and where they are located? My guess would be Springfield or Aberdeen, but I'd like to know 'fer sure'.

if my history is correct ... nothing really led up to the M1 Garand aside from Charles own work.
the Bang, Peterson, Hatcher and others had little to no influence on this design other than perhaps the final chamber specification.
I'd guess on them being at Springfield if they are archived in one place, that'd be it.

Who's Charles? Garand's first name was John.

The majority and most complete dispaly of all US military small arms are at the Springfield Armory Historical Site. However , due to frequent area closing due to renovations , and delays in that due to budget cuts. , ya might go to their website and perhaps contact them about what is going on the weeks you intend to visit.

I was there many years ago , and it was awe inspiring then.

Springfield is the place to go, but a lot of the rare stuff is in storage up on the top two floors of the museum building. I was part of a private tour of the storage facility 10 years ago and didn't see much as they wanted everbody to walk around with their hands in their pockets so you couldn't touch anything. Thought I was in shake down at the county jail.

So, it looks like the Garand prototypes are at Springfield. How about the Pedersons, and the Colt-Auto Ordnance-Thompsons, etc? Has anybody actually seen them at Springfield, or anyplace else?
