First Man: "You want a Coke?"

Second Man: "Yeah."

First Man: "What kind?"

Second Man: "Sprite."

I actually overheard this conversation.

Yeah, same thing when ordering a "hot dog". Depends on where you are as to what you get.

Around here, an order for a "hot dog" will get you a wiener on a bun with mustard, chili and onions. Down south one time it got me just a wiener on a bun and up north they put sauerkraut on it one time.

I've learned to be specific now when I order away from home and someone (I think it was from Michigan) patiently explained to me what "coney-sauce" was. :D

My husband walked into an Allentown PA diner and said, "Give me a tea regular and a buttered roll." They were totally dumbfounded.

I once asked for a powdered donut in southcentral PA and was met with gales of laughter.

When I lived in the Raleigh area they said "drink". It was in the singular use and meant pop or soda. Being from up north "drinks" meant something totally different. They would say "who will bring drink?"

I'm very specific when I order a "soda". I usually drink/ask for a "diet cola", then they come back with "is Coke ok" or "is Pepsi ok" depending on what brand they carry. If I wanted a Sprite or Ginger ale, I'll ask for one.

There is sort of survival group in the boonies in our area thats business is to take drugger deliquents from wealthy familys, blindfold them and take them in the middle of nowhere and they sort of have to work together to turn their life around. The wife and I were on a trail exploreing with our ATV and came upon them. One asked me did I have some coke. I started fishing in the cooler box for a can and the handeler stopped me and said, he means coke, the drug!

We had an assortment of "Cokes" once so I put Pepsi, Coke, and Shasta in three shotglasses. Then my wife and I did a taste test. We both instantly guessed which was which. I guess we were bored that day.

I'm curious as to what "other" names are.

While I call all soft drinks "coke" (unless I really mean coke - that's a co-cola), I've known several people that called 'em all "Pepsi".

I noticed, to my surprise, that my county only has 50% that call it coke, while the two counties next to us are at the 80% rate. I suppose that's 'cause we have the beaches, and are a tourist trap. If they polled at the beach, probably 90% of the people asked were Yankees. That might be the reason.

When in IL in the 60's it was "Pop".

One of my grandmothers would always say "you want something soft to drink" or soft drink. I think she used that verbage because my grandfather was a big drinker and he was always having a "hard drink".

My other grandmother called all soda "tonic". As in "Bring up a case of tonic from the cellar."

Pretty much what we do here. Also called a "drank". "Belly washer" is a term as well.
