Not a stupid question. These acronyms drive me nuts. I was reading a post on another forum today in which the poster said that his gun worked best with LSWCHP ammunition. It took me 15 minutes to figure out what that meant.

A post on another gun forum referred to "shorter coal". I had to read through the whole dang thing to figure out he was talking about lighter powder charges. Good grief!

coal doesn't refer to lighter powder charges, and if that's what someone claimed they are loopy. That's the standard acronym for cartridge overall length as measured in inches. It has nothing to do with lighter powder charges, with the exception that sometimes a shorter c.o.a.l. required to fit a certain chamber may require less powder to allow for the bullet to be seated deeper, which makes the c.o.a.l. shorter
