Hey all, found this forum looking for some answers...

3 days ago I purchased a 642 and during boxed documents review noticed the revolver was documented as a 637. Serial numbers matched on all documents to the revolver but everything said 637 when it is actually a 642. The model number on the frame is 637.

I called S&W yesterday and they confirmed the serial number as a 637 in their database. The person on the phone said; "We need that revolver back".

My favorite local shop (not where I purchased the 642) said there were collectors out there interested in mis marked weapons. As I am not a "collector" and shoot all my weapons I'm interested in exploring what this revolver may be worth and finding someone interested in it for its' collectability.

Any idea what this may be worth and how I go about finding someone who is interested in it?

There was a guy on here about a month ago with a 340 or 360 that had the wrong barrel shroud on it. Convinced it was the holy grail. Another poster had a 642 without a lock but still had the arrow hieroglyph. These screw ups from S&W seem fairly common these days.

From my short time visiting this forum it seems that these anomalies from S&W, along with the million different commemorative models, don't sell for anything more than the regular version.

Thanks for the reply. Didn't think I necessarily had the "Holy Grail" but wondered if it was something of interest to a collector.

Like I said, I'm a shooter not a collector and long ago sold a S&W commemorative knife, number 076 in a series, because I couldn't stand not using a good knife. Figured someone who got pleasure just from the having should enjoy it.

I would have to say yes that some collectors will pay for the mistake. You might want to list the gun on Gunbroker.
