Found this on a table at a Gunshow this Morning. Even though the Hammer Screw has been replaced with a non original screw it is A rare enough gun that I could look past it to see its beauty, The gun has a Brown Patina over most of the gun with a few areas of blue in protected areas. The serial # 12603 is on all parts even the grips. A couple months ago I found a 38 Winchester Double Action here in Tucson too. the 44 is 1 of 15,340 made, the 38 is one of 276 made. Maybe I should collect these old antiques too.

there was a Model 2 on the same table and when I 1st saw it I thought it was a Rare 4" gun but after measuring it the barrel was an even rarer 3.75" and had been cut from a 5 or 6" barrel.

Dan, I'm not sure I agree that the hammer screw is not original. I have had several of these with that same screw. Maybe they all got replaced???? The gun actually looks better that you had described it to me, The patina is very even, which give it that good antique frontier ambiance. Good find! Ed.

beaver,

its the one dead center of the sideplate on the left side

Dan,
I'm glad to see that you are starting to really get interested in the old ones. Nice pickups, keep them coming.

Mark, I have been carefully instrucing Dan in the Art of "Old Ones" for some time, and I'm pleased to say he has begun to "See the Light," however, he has occasional periods of backsliding whenever he see one of those scratched up, pearl handled, Wolf & Klar clones to which he is severely addicted. Recovery can be a long process sometimes... Ed.

Thanks Mark,

I 1st started collecting Civil war guns back in the early eighties but lost interest when the prices went crazy in the 90's. I collected Colts and Bacons back then. I never realized how big of a impact S&W had back then. Now that I am more wiser and aged (like good wine) I know a good deal when I see it. Most of the dealers walked right past this one during set-up I saw it and said thats a good gun at a bargain price, It aint no beauty queen like my New Model #3 target but it has a place of safety to reside now.
The best part was I made a connection with the seller who just inherited over 800 guns from Grandpa, these were all the culls from the good stuff which he said he will call me when he gets ready to sell.

"Orejas grandes Eduardo" thanks for the education :D
