I just spoke to the S&W rep and he told me they are manufacturing several new j frames w/o the lock. I checked with my distributors and even though they don't have it in stock yet, they show a 340PD w/o a lock.....among several other j frames w/o the lock........I guess my pre-lock 342 just went down in value huh? ha ha. I'm glad to see them start making some more models w/o the lock.

RightWinger,

Thank you very much for the information. Do you know of any other models that they intend to make without the lock?

I think they finnally realized that removing the lock would increase gun sales and that others have gone to Ruger and other manufacturers. It really would have made sense to have the "Classics" made without the Internal Lock but that is another issue. Now we have to see the price point of the non lock gun.Betcha they will charge more to not have it.We shall see....God Bless....Mike

I remember when the gas companies charged extra for unleaded. Charge more when they don't have the expense of adding the lead??? Same idea here, you may be right.

Or maybe cut the expense of high polished blue or nickle finishes, leave rough, matte finish, call them "TACTICAL" and raise the prices.

;)

I have a 642 (my daily carry) that came with a lock. It now has the "plug" and NO lock.

Problem solved...

SW has both the 442 and 642 available w/o the ILS; I am uncertain as to which other models are available. These were initially marketed to LE who had concerns (but why???) about the confounded ILS. Have seen these in a couple of dealers cases. Price is at same point as ILS revolvers. These have been out for at least the last two years; have had a new 642 no-lock and it worked as expected.

I picked up a 442 Pro this summer without the lock. Currently only Centennial verisons have been ILS free (442/642/40/42). Would be nice if they extend it out to hammer guns on L, N and X frames.

I bought a 642-1 pro model in august. No lock and cut for moon clips, nice gun and light. But it does not shoot as well as my 36. On the other hand I have not put 100 rds through this DAO gun. Still waiting for the rebate check.

does that mean that in 30-40yrs. my 442 with the lock will be worth more than one without????

Sure glad someone can find a new J frame without the lock. I have checked all, and I mean all gun dealers within 100 miles in 3 states. I get the same old story. Some dealers I believe stock the lock and deny any knowledge of any without until they manage to sell their inventory. My local dealer would charge me more than the cost of the revolver just to receive it. I carry my Mod. 60 and 36, wanted a hammer-less but I refuse to be robbed.

You need to find a new Dealer. Mine charges $25 max for a transfer and would order anything I want. I picked up my 642 Pro for 455.75 out the door before the $50 rebate.

BudsGunShop.com has the 442 without the lock advertized online.

Tacticool!!!

I love the comment on the "tactical" finish as an option. Who knew all those Model 28's were really the SWAT option???

:D

The total price for a transfer shouldn't be anymore than 35 bucks, I charge 25 plus the 10 dollar background check. I am not aware of any dealer that charges less than 25 dollars for the transfer, there are dealers out there who insist on punishing a person for not buying the gun from them and charge 50-75 for a transfer but I have only heard of a few places doing this in the TN area at least.....

I just bought a 442 for myself and a 642 for my wife, both shown as made in 2010. Mine has the lock hers does not. When I emailed S&W out of curiousity, their reply was "the newer guns are made with the lock but one distributor can order them without". So I guess it depends on which distributor the local dealer gets their guns from as to if you get a lock or not.

Well I made a few calls to dealers, didn't ask just told them I might order a handgun and will pay $25 for receiving and transferring. Got one out of three to agree. Thanks everyone for a nice price quote that I could quote as top dollar. Thanks again.

Last year, Lipsey's Firearms Distributors had the "Molon Labe" Airweight S&W's for sale without the IL. A local gunshop was one of their dealers. I found it by accident since I had brought in a 642 to get an action job done and saw the new guns on display. I immediately bought one of the 642 models. I've since had an action job done on it and it has become my most carried handgun.

Here's a link to Lipsey's:Lipsey's - Wholesale Firearms Distributor - Exclusive Firearms - Handguns, Shotguns, Rifles, Accessories

There is a dealer locator at the website. A few non-lock guns are listed.

I bought a no-lock 642 about 2 years ago. I had the locked version but sold it when I heard about the no-lock ones coming out. The story I heard was that it was a limited run of 2,000. I guess they sold well because I believe it's a catalogued item now.
As soon as I heard about them I called my LGS and he had one in stock - $410.
It's actually marked as a 642-1.
I don't think the lock actually hurts anything on a .38 but the no-lock sure looks better in my opinion.
