I have a Smith & Wesson model 27-2 with the 8-3/8" barrel. It is the blued model with 3-t's. I purchased it new in 1977. It is the most accurate revolver I have ever fired. This is probably due to its long sight radius. It has also what I consider to be the best in your hands balance of any revolver I have ever held. This is probably due to the heavy N frame that off sets the long barrel weight. Is there anyone else out there that shares my views ????

I suppose I share your view, yes. Although I do not have a model 27 I do have and have had various model 29's over the years.....and I've always preferred the 8 3/8th inch barrel in all of them, the longest being 10 5/8th inch.
My 29-2 has an 8 3/8th barrel and the balance feels just right to me. The issue of better accuracy is not JUST because of the longer sight radius. I believe that few extra inches of rifling gives more stability to the bullet in flight. 8 inches of rifling instead of 4 inches of rifling makes all the difference in the world.
Just my own opinion based on my own experiences.

The tapered barrel on the 27 makes the long one feel nice rather than heavy and clumsy (IMO) like the heavy 29 and 57 barrels. In my experience the 8" 27 is a shooting machine.
Hey guys, thanks for the positive replies to my comments about the accuracy and balance of the 8-3/8" N-frame Smith's. It seems like all the other shorter barrel length N-frames get all the fan fair. I was beginning to think that I was weird and that it was just me that thought that the 8-3/8" N-frames were the most accurate and had the best balance. I agree with "rdcl" statement that not only does the longer sighting radius of the 8-3/8" barrel aid in it's accuracy but more rifling gives the bullet more stability and is the primary reason for it's exceptional accuracy. Added to this is the marvelous balance that helps in holding the revolver steady. For all of you out there that have never fired a model 27 or 29 with the 8-3/8" barrel, you will be in for a very pleasant surprise. Not only does it look like "Dirty Harry's" model 29 on steroids but it makes you look like a expert hand gun shooter.
I agree with "SaxonPig" post that the "tapered" barrel of the 8-3/8" model 27 gives it an even better balance than that of the non-tapered heavy barreled model 29's and 57's, however they are all very good as compaired to the shorter barreled N-frames when it comes to superior balance.
I agree the long M27 is the best balanced of the long N frames, maybe the best of any of the N frames for offhand shooting. I bought this one in 1975 and it has around 4000 rounds through it. It has a little of the two-tone finish common on mid-70's guns, but it is put together correctly and is very accurate.

I just picked up a 1973 vintage as of yet unfired model 29-2 with the 8 3/8 barrel, the wooden case with all papers and cleaning equiptment. It also came with a Bianchi X15 sholder holster. I am hoping to shoot it tomorrow or would that be stupid as the gun is "as new"?

I have 4......2 Nickel and 2 Blue and with the tapered barrel they have the most graceful appearance of any of my other S&Ws. Been in the hospital 4 times this year and haven't had a chance to get to the range but I'm sure they're much more accurate than I am.
I'm a fan-here's my Model 57
& my Model 27.

I sure like that holster...what make is it? I have older Bianchi flap holsters for 4" and 6", but not 8 3/8" (they stopped making them years ago). I like the flap.

I love my 29-3 nickle 44 magnum with 8 3/8'' bbl. It is more accurate than I am,for sure.Still trying different reloads for it,44spl. have really no recoil at all. Its great.
GF1, it's a Lawrence holster.
